The logistical capacity of the US military is unparallelled worldwide. It is actually our greatest strength, as it enables us to project massive force at a speed that leaves our most capable adversaries gasping in shock and awe. The force you can put where you want, when you want it, is FAR more powerful than the force that's a long way away from where you want it to be.
Creighton Abrams not only served in Vietnam, but also served in WWII and Korea. It just so happens that I saw him in Honolulu during a layover on my flight to Vietnam.

@@frankmontez6853 No, he died as chief of staff of the Army in 1974. The Abrams was introduced in 1980 but at the time of his passing the then blueprinted 'new' main battle tank had no specified name, just a project number.

@@frankmontez6853 It is quite common that if the name of a weapons system is that of a person, it is awarded posthumously. According to Wiki, the first designs for the Abrams began in 1972. While it's conceivable Mr. Abrams knew the tank would be named in his honor, it is unlikely that the name chosen for a major weapons program is assigned the moment a new project starts
Back in the late 1980's, I served as a Cavalry Scout at Fort Knox. One time, we were out training, determining road grades through the use of maps and without maps, estimating water speeds of rivers, and determining the weight capacity of bridges using simple calculations based on bridge length, span lengths, type of material, size and number structural components. We were at two-track rail bridge made from wooden timbers. The platoon sergeant asked if this bridge can support a single M-1 tank crossing over it one at a time. I quickly said yes, thinking nothing of it. Everyone went silent. They did not have time to count the timber,guesimate the span length, etc., much less do the calculations using a mechanical computer (a wheel, but functionally similar to a slide rule), which I did not use. However, I actually had a BS in engineering before I enlisted. They all wondered if I actually did the calculations in my head. The Platoon sergeant asked me how I knew. I said that based on the maps we were using, this bridge is the only rail line heading east. In case of a war with the USSR (they had not collapsed yet and it was not obvious they would), all equipment (to include M-1 tanks) from Fort Knox would have to use this bridge to get to the East Coast, before being load on to ships to reinforce Europe. Not only can the bridge support one M-1, it can support a train loaded with M-1s. Everyone broke out laughing. It seems you did not have to do a bunch of calculations to answer an engineering question, even if you have an engineering degree.
Don't you miss the 80's and the simple daily fear of the Cold War, MAD and the USSR Bear that we pretty much knew their stuff was garbage, stolen reverse engineered equipment that blew up in their faces often with publicly humiliating results? What is being done to this country TODAY internally by the DimoRATS (FORMER Democrat here)to destroy the US and hand us over to WW Communism makes me wish for the 'safe' days of the beautiful golden 80's? Lincoln's prediction or maxim that our destruction could only come from within is being brutally instigated right now.

Several years ago, I asked why were were replacing most of our bridges, we were spending most of our budget on bridges that were still in good shape. I wanted to do some repaving jobs. I was told they were not rated for Abrams tanks. I asked why Abrams tanks would be driving around Las Vegas. I was told nunya business.
When the Iraqi war ended I saw a train 2 miles long loaded with these tanks in Wylie Texas headed for the red river army depot in Texas. What a sight.

Can fit three on my 135ft USN Landing Craft Utility, but due to weight limits could only transport 2 from shore to ship and ship to shore. Great times.

Good Day All : I worked for the turbine blade manufacturer in Mississauga Ontario Canada for 16 years . The engine builder was Textron/Lycoming . That engine program was the AGT 1500 . Best dammed turbine blades , most cost efficient . The ones that we made for the Rolls Royce Turbine division in Derby England were much too over designed by R.R. and therefore each finished blade was about 12 or 13 times more expensive than the ones we made for the M1A1 program . Cost efficient parts are something that some people overlook .

FIT AND WELL TRAINED MILITARY
The M1A2 Abrams has 3 different weapons systems, the main gun 120mm, 240 machine gun, and 50 Cal. Machine gun on top of the turret mounted in a CROW system.
Don't forget the coaxial M240 machine gun beside the gun. so really 4. The 120mm main gun, the M240 machine gun for the gunner, the 50 Cal for the commander, and the 240 coaxial beside the main gun.

Wow...I have to wonder if most of the vehicles were going in for refurbishing. Our commander wouldn't let anything off the base without it being clean and relatively ship shape. Even when I was a civilian contractor I used to make sure that anything with tracks had a daily track cleaning, summer and winter, especially winter, before the crew could call it a day.
When I saw the tracks on the railcars and they were that dirty, I thought, where's the steam genny?

Back in 91 and again after 9/11 it seemed like every other train that came through was a military train loaded down with equipment. It was impressive seeing the M1 tanks and Bradley fighting vehicle, oh and let’s not leave out the mobile artillery! The mobilization was huge both times, you really had to see it to believe just how much equipment was being deployed.

In Germany back in the 70s there trains used a smaller track width so our tank tracks hung over quite a bit and approaching a flat car was fun as the other end rose up in the air when I started onto it

Have you seen military equipment up close? Those things have been beat with hammers, ground between tracks and cement, drug 400 miles hanging off a rail car.
The pipe wrench is probably the only tool they can find that works with the beat up equipment.
The most recent variety isn't the A2, it's the M1a2 Sep v3 with Sep v4 being finalized for 2025. You're missing 4 whole generations. The hull was nailed down by the A2, but the Sep packages are what keep it fresh for the kids

The engine is a General Dinamics turbine diesel not a gas turbine 1500HP, I worked in them for long time more than 15 years.
Thanks for clarification. By using Diesel rather than J1 (Kerosene) it simplified fueling requirements greatly.
Its a gas turbine and use JP8.
