Game developers Chase Kolozsi and Evan Michael Lee return today to review footage of the upcoming game Black Myth Wukong. Being described as a Souls-like game our devs are following some gameplay footage to get some thoughts and feedback for the upcoming game. From the video, it looks like it’s a mixed bag, with both high and low points to consider but also don’t forget we have a while until release so there is still room for improvement. Be sure to let us know what your first thoughts are in the comments below!
According to some, the game is similar to the Souls series. In this game, players control a monkey with an uncanny resemblance to the titular character referred to in the game as "the Destined One" (天命人) to fight enemies, with abilities to transform into flying insects or giant monsters.

I’m not judging their opinion on the game because that’s their opinion, but I would prefer to hear from game developers, artist developers and voice actors that actually know the tale of Journey to the West and Sun Wukong.
You only get the chills when they talk the right shit and know what is actually going on with the main character.

Ah yes, the return of the guys who work in game industry but aren't developers. Don't get me wrong, these guys know more and are more qualified than the average joe to comment on games, but I've met plenty of people in the auxiliary departments (yes I'm in gamedev) like these guys who really have no real clue what goes on in real development (neither is it their job to know). No knock against these guys, I feel like Gameology put them up to this, slapped the label of 'developer' on them and told them to do their best.

Honestly I hope you'll do the same with someone who is an expert on chinese folklore, I think it could add a lot more context to the things we're seeing.

He was skeptical about Wukong because it was pretty? He clearly hasn't seen Ghost of Tsushima. Also, it would've helped if they were told about the lore of Wukong beforehand. The main problem you guys have with these react series is that you don't give the background to what they are reacting too. Makes no sense.
Definitely feel like, a third commentator who is knowledgeable on The Journey to the West would have supplemented or at least give context to the two on visuals and overall inspiration of the game.

I feel like these guys have never heard the story of the monkey king. Thought it was funny that one of them kept referring to other media, such as Naruto and dragon ball. As if this game was stealing from those shows. The funny bit is its the other way around, the monkey king story is a very old story.
I'd love to see an expert reaction to ready or not. Think it would be interesting to see how realistic it really is

It's nice to see western media picking up on the eastern work, but i think the video would be a lot better if there was someone to explain the story and culture that the game was based upon. Everything would make a lot more sense.

Unreal 5 is probably one of the best game engines today.
I mean its totally new with the latest technology and shit and still isn't even finished its just a very early early alpha version. So it's *gonna* be the best game engine. But it isn't yet.
Yea in fact it’s so good that many multi million dollar movies use the Unreal engine to help w special effects
@@lupomena Wow I never even thought of that but I don’t doubt that for a second. I really want to know what avatar two is using for CGI because I have a feeling that’s gonna look at mind blowing. Cameron has a tendency to go overboard, spend a lot and set the bar really high when it comes to this kind of stuff.
@@The_Primary_Axiom that’s cuz he knows the behind the scenes, for example I like making music so naturally since I know the details of how a song is made the little errors/mistakes instantly pop up for me. Just like him and games

“Did he do the Naruto gig?” Naaaah Naruto stole that from Wukong, Wukong is a trickster, master of 73 different transformations and creates clones of himself in combat to confuse his enemies.

The fact that that they kept comparing it to Dragon Ball without realizing why, just made me anxious. They should have these two as their base cast and bring a third with more, better knowledge on the game (specific genre, cultural references, technical knowledge, etc). I do like the concept, though.
Also, the game looks unbelievable.

Honestly not that great this time around, kind of saddens me that there was no discussion in regards to the character. Wukong has got to be one of the most well known characters around in my opinion. I mean hell, there's even a Wukong in League of Legends and in Smite i believe.
Shows how bad of a choice these two are. They don't even know the sources the characters in their own game are based on.

Nothing against the 2 commentators but I feel like you did this game a great disservice by not having someone with more relevant expertise talking about it. They brought little to the table other than some general opinions & guesswork. Be nice to see someone else talk about the actual technical side of the game & also the Chinese mythology it's based on.
this video just shows how disconnected westerners are from east asian mythology, this time specifically from chinese mythos. Many anime borrow from there.
This video shows how old and barely recognizable the original stuff is since it’s been adapted more times then the original story. I mean for god sake dragon ball is more well known then Wukong at this point!

@Aiden yeah,visuals are important,but how many times we've seen amazing looking trailers and gameplays just to get downgraded,unpolished,clunky games? Also,yeah,the story is great,doesn't mean it will be well adapted,again,there's so many games and movies based on fantastic source material that end up being terrible. All I'm saying is people have way to high expectations based on short trailers,it's insane,it's like cyberjunk,anthem,no man's sky and many others didn't happen,and again,it's a tiny studio. It's just so incredibly irritating that we never learn.

@Aiden cyberpunk had 48 min gameplay demo uploaded to yt on top of countless interviews with developers and trailers,also,the demo wasn't even real,it was made specifically to promote the game,same with anthem,the"gameplay" section wasn't even in the game and was completely fabricated.

Content producer and a voice actor DOES NOT = Developers. Honestly, I'm not even going to watch this video because the last time I saw these two all they did was mock the game they were watching. I will not deny that days gone has its faults, but they just acted like a**holes.
I love this game and the fact that they have the nimbus and the staff that the monkey God actually used.
Isn't Wukong literally in League of Legends? I mean, I haven't read Journey to the West but I at least know like the bare minimum. I quess Wukong doesn't get updated much or something.
Yea that's how they treat wukong in League of Legends lol he doesn't even transform.
Not knocking the guests, but having more technical experts instead of voice actors and the like would've been better. More over, someone familiar with Chinese Mythology would've WAY better to give more perspective and understanding as to the story and context of the monsters and setting.
Black Wukong was the peak full utilization of UE4, similar to UE4 tech demo I may say it'll be the 1st playable* tech demo we getting before Matrix tech demo

because even Riot Games only gives their wukong 1 clone, and NO transformation. Yet give transformations to 2 whole other characters.
I agree when I have a boss fight I like to look around the area that we fought in and see how it fared. I love looking around and realizing "yeah we fucked this place up"

Chase added more to what they're reacting to than Evan. Chase was talking about the static camera, textures for different perspectives, crowd AI, etc. while Evan mostly joking around. Not to say a little humor is ok, but I think it would be more interesting if he added more insightful comments than just joking around.

I had the same thought. There was no reason for him even being there, he didn't add anything to the theme of what this video is suggesting to accomplish. Like you said, it's okay for some humor here and there, but if that's all you're bringing to the table in a "dev react" video, especially when you're not even a dev, it just got kind of annoying after a few minutes. And even when the other guy, who's also not a dev, is actually trying to pick apart some things and talk about some stuff that a dev actually would comment on, it's just completely ruined by the VA saying "hold on, back it up a bit" just to make a joke that isn't even funny.
He's a voice actor since when does that count as a game developer lmao. He doesn't know anything about games development

With respect, these 2 really just want an anime game. I mean talking about Sailor Moon and Natuto. The tale of the Journey to the West and the culture is a lot why they did what they did. It would be cool to see someone who is familiar with the tale to react instead

If there are any AAA developers in the comments or other people who work in the industry and see this, why are there a huge lack of games set in Ancient / mythological China? There’s so much potential here and yet all we keep seeing are knights and samurai. Even as a solo UE developer I can hardly find ancient China themed assets on the marketplace.
Dragons are huge in Chinese culture….
And there are a lot of games that represent Chinese culture. It’s doesn’t have to be an AAA developer

Programming/scripting, bug testing, animations, audio engineering, etc. Hell, I would much rather hear the input of writers and composers.

Look guys I get it you want someone to talk about the game but a big part of this game is the culture and its a little upsetting to see two people who know nothing about the culture talk about a game whose big selling point is Son Wukong a prolific chinese mythical figure.
Of course Son wukong isn't the only selling point there's also the graphics and I'm sure more I haven't read or looked into about But one of the biggest parts of the game is the Chinese mythological culture behind it or the Chinese culture in general

I have an idea for the video. The creators of animatronics for movies (I don't remember how they are normally called) react to animatronics in Fnaf Security Reach. I was always interested in how a person who does animatronics will talk about how they were portrayed in the fnaf. About how they move. Their structure (endoskeletons). And so on.

I grew up watching Sun wukong Movie and series so everything in this game is base on The monkey king story ! Naruto and Dragonball is inspired by Sun wukong ! you know why he can transform in to many different creature because Sun wukong have a ability to transform 72 kind of creature like Dragon , human , horse , his teacher , tiger stuff like that !

In my opinion about this hero Sun Wukong "孙悟空". All his power are accurate 👌, even the Jingu staff also accurate too, it can be big and small. I hoping this game developer would give better improve in the meantime they producing it maybe game like "Sekiro: Shadow Die Twice".
Another facts is in South East Asian country especially Chinese people. Some Chinese temple has Wukong and 3 other legendary character. Which Which in religion, people praise them.

Game uses new Unreal Engine 5 doesn't use as much resources as UE4 did, and its based on chinese mythology of Son Wukong who is able to change form
