  • I REGRET BUYING RARE PLANTS - DON'T MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE
    Hey ya'll! As you know I've been collecting plants for several years now and it's to no one's surprise that I had a real houseplant addiction. Over the years, I was collecting a lot of rare plants. Boy, do I regret it now.
    Watch this video to hear about my journey and what I've learned and perhaps you won't make the same mistakes I did!

    Great topic for a video! I don’t judge folks with fancier setups, or people who did things they regret (especially during a pandemic that was wild to deal with, emotionally and physically) but I managed to avoid cabinets and humidifiers and plants over $50. Which is not to say I didn’t spend too much on plants that weren’t right for my space. It sure was tempting to jump into the rare plant “collect em all” game. I don’t blame anybody who did. It’s nice to see that frequently the prices do come down if I can be patient, too.

    I bought an obliqua peru node for $350 in 2021… and a whole plant with four growth points in 20222 for $90.
    I feel like even the low prices you mentioned are still very high compared to those in Michigan. Shop here. Haha
    I’m glad I’ve waited on a lot of monstera. My albos were worth it either way.

      Yes the prices are higher in Canada compared to the US. Even now some prices I’ve seen overseas in Asia is still relatively high compares to what is being sold now in the US. Trust me I wanna be shopping where you are lol

    My 2021 mistake was a philodendron joepii & paraiso verde.......NEVER, EVER AGAIN, I now wait for everything to drop low enough, these plants aren't going anywhere, it's a waiting game, i now only buy what i truly love & next on my list is the spiritus sancti, lets see if it'll reach $19.95 😁😁

    I am glad that i only got last year into plants, my most expensive plant was a very big Anthurium Luxurians for 250 euro. This is my maximum budget, i would worry to much that i could be killing plants that i can not replace easily.
    I am waiting now for the Monstera Mint and Monstera Burle Marx Flame, the prices are slowly going down and i hope i can get them later this year .I saw them in seedling or small cutting size for around 250, i expect them to get to about 150 for a small plant this year or next.
    Here in Germany prices are getting quite low, Holland is close and has a lot of nurseries , I am quite sure they are already growing my wishlist monsteras .

    I’m a couple months late on this, but it reenforces the trend. I got my M. adansonii Japanese tricolor for $80. One less leaf than your pic.
    Waiting on my wish plant, M Burle Marx Flame. I make $100 as my spending limit. For this one, if it’s close, I’d buy it. Time growing vs savings may be a big percent, but ~$40-$50 vs 6 month wait for this slow grower, I’m more than ok with it. I already waited for it to drop from $15k. 😊

    Thank you. This is very eye opening. I stopped buying rare plants too. Cant make much profit reselling either because of undercutting and tissue culture. I'd rather wait for the prices to reduce and buy a large plant than paying so much for a little plant now.

    Good video.
    It’s all about patience. My wishlist plant is Monstera Burle Marx Flame. I’ll be ecstatic if I get it in 2023, but I’m thinking 2024 once starts go under $100.
    Got my Obliquas for $37.50 at a pop up last week. I paid $50 for nodes that did nothing last year. Same with Albo monstera nodes. If I waited, I could get plants for what I wasted on nodes that failed. Glad I didn’t paid 4 digits for them.

    Where do you recommend getting plants?

    • @leafletco
      @leafletco  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It really depends on what you’re looking for. A lot of nurseries in my area have already started importing in “rare aroids” which is nice. I would recommend trying your local nurseries or see when Ecuagenera will have a pop up show

  • @oznow77
    @oznow77 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I see what you're saying, but keeping in mind when you order plants directly from Ecuagenera, the majority of them require rehabbing which is why their plants are priced so low. At their pop ups, their prices are much higher. I see time as money. So for me, paying an extra $40-$50 for a plant in better condition is worth it.

    Agree with you! I was still getting my footing in 2021 so I didn't go that crazy to veer into 4 digit range for a single plant. In Alberta, people aren't even buying albos that are un-fenestrated; I've got a 5 leafer top cut that has been growing on a moss pole for $300 and I've got zero takers 🥲

    Well, you can also try and analyze the situation this way. If you took good care of your plant and it grew to the point you had to repot it, your plant INCREASED in value. So it would be interesting to know how much you would get if you decided to sell your more mature, pristine plant, you see? Then you would have better numbers to work with! 😉🪴
