My 89 year old grandmother asked for a priest so she could get her last rights. The local catholic parish didn't have anyone to spare so they sent a cardinal to give her her last rights at 7pm on a Sunday in July. She didn't get up for breakfast... some people just know when they have completed their journey on this plane, and in that moment they are the lucky ones as they have that sense of finality to their journey. My uncle was present at the event and says to this day that she was never more calm or peaceful that he can remember than she was that night
Johnny Cash wrote songs and made money, and his work often played on emotions to connect with listeners. This song and video were clearly crafted to tug at heartstrings,he was overacted and making the effort to produce a commercial product. The song is as much a tribute to his ego as it is to commercialism. It’s well-designed to deliver a gut-punch of emotion, and the fact that we invest in it emotionally is exactly what the hook is meant to do. Those at the top, like Cash, know how to manipulate our need for meaning and connection. This human tendency, which likely helped us in our evolutionary past, can easily be exploited for profit.
Originally done by Nine Inch Nails and written by Trent Reznor, this was a metal groove. Cash adopted it and made it very sad and somber and killed it! His wife (in the video) died very shortly after this. He passed not long after, and it seems he knew he would. Reznor has since said that the song belongs to Johnny now.
A friend of mine, a cast member from Hee Haw, asked him at June's funeral how he was doing and he said, "Honey, I'll be dead in six months." He made it to four. 😞
Yeah, it's amazing how just the tone of his voice changes the entire meaning of the song. Originally about drug addiction... "The needle tears a hole, the old, familiar sting". A song about drugs slowly taking a life, long before it's time. But in Cash's version, you assume it's medication, and the tragedy of the needle keeping someone alive beyond their time. A complete reversal of the meaning without changing any lyrics. There aren't many artists who can do that.
Generally, when you see men crying they have been taking SSRI’s . No statistical analysis.but this has been observation as a 62 year old.I have been on Selective serotonin Re-uptake inhibitors For 28 years. One of the saddest images is the shattered Columbia framed album. Johnny put Columbia on the map and made them millions. They dropped them without notice in the 80's and Johnny never forgave them for it. Thank God for Rick Rubin, genius, who knew what Cash could bring to the table and was still powerful and relevant as an artist. Plus Johnny's FU attitude was perfect for Rubin's label American Recordings
YES, this hit us, the fans, VERY hard the 1st time we saw it. We all knew he was telling us "goodbye". If you're wondering, the picture hanging on the wall is Johnny's mother. When his wife June died, many think Johnny died not long after from a broken heart. He missed June so much.
Bro I’m probably older than you are and definitely a grown ass man and I cry every time I watch A reaction to this video. I think we can all connect to this song because we’ve all dealt with pain and hurt and lost in fear in our lives and you get to the point where Johnny was and you realize none of that stuff that you spent your life doing really matters none of the awards or gold records helps you feel better when you’ve lost all your loved ones and you’re sick yourself. The only thing that is important at that point is your relationship with God your friends and your family the rest of it is just an empire of dirt. Ashes to ashes dust to dust. RIP Johnny Cash
This was Johnny's goodbye and he admitted thst before he passed. Trent who wrote it said this song belonged to Johnny now. Trents version was about addiction and was excellent. But this version is superior because it strikes a chord with everyone. Not every person deals with addiction, but everyone will have to deal with the end of life and facing their life choices and regrets. We do lose everyone, we all will because that final journey we have to take alone. The final line is the most emotional I think. If he could go back and keep himself. Thats the biggest lesson. To achieve fame Johnny had to lose himself and become what the label and his fans wanted. This lead to addictions, crime, driving people away.... so don't burn your bridges and keep those you love and treasure then, keep true to yourself, because life is short and all the fame and money won't save you. The only thing you have is your heart, soul integrity. Don't give thst up.
@@Gutslinger It felt like a warm hug. I have goosebumps right now thinking about it. Speaking as an old man in the winter of my life I can say Johnny sings the common song for us all. as we get closer to the horizon of our lives we can look back and see the times we chased after selfish dreams and fought old dragons at the expense of the goodness in other's lives, as well as our own. So many of the things we were proud of when young, now fill us with deep pain and regret. It is a song of warning to all the young to get your priorities straight early in life. And you could see the distress 9:56 on her face as she looked over him. Because physically she would not be able to look after him anymore😢
Johnny was known and respected across genres. Many other artists list him as an inspiration. The story of his first meeting with Bob Dylan is a classic.

Watch the movie walk the line about Johnny and you will understand why this song meant a lot to him. He struggled his life with addictions but his wife and her family helped him through it.
Johnny's daughter Roseanne asked him not to record it. She said Dad it sounds like you're saying goodbye. Johnny said, I am. I knew he was the 1st time I saw it.I sat there sobbing. I didn't know him personally but he has been there my whole life. I didn't want to say goodbye 😢

Great Reaction, and very good comment. To me, what Johnny was saying was, "What good does it do if you gain the whole world, and then lose it all in the end. My empire is dirt."
Have you ever watched the movie”Walk the Line” it dictates Johnny’s life and how June saved him. He always wears black and if you listen to his song “Man in Black” you’ll get the true Johnny
I have respect for Trent that i never had before, he wasn't crazy about Johnny doing this song but after he heard it he was blown away. He said i was born to write it Johnny was born to sing it. He on went to say this song isn't mine anymore. Johnny knew he was dying this was his goodbye when he closed the lid on the piano it was symbolic of closing his casket lid.. My husband and i go to his grave once a month there is nothing more humbling than standing in the presence of greatness. awesome reaction. love to you both from the one and only Memphis Tn.
Great reaction. For me, this song really hits home. I'm 72, and I can completely relate to regrets that pile up as I grow older. And there's a deep meaning to the end of the song. For me (that's the only person I can speak for, obviously) when he says, "I will keep myself, I would find a way.", it means even if I could go back and do it all over again, I'd be much the same person I was before. I'd keep myself. I'd, somehow, find a way to keep from changing very much. Like I said, it hits me hard. Thanks for sharing with us!

Johnny Cash is one of mt fathers' favorite country artists. I grew up listening to him and he's also one of my favorites also. Here's two legendary female country music artists performing together "Reba McEntire feat. Dolly Parton - Does He Love You" Really sad song it never fails I always shed a tear when I watch this. Lovely reaction Thanx for sharing
Yeah, this was horrifically prophetic. Love the man, love the legend. Love him more for this...he lived a hard, drug fueled life. He overcame, but, did he??? This hits hard! The closing of the piano at the end...😢
"But did he??" Well, duh.. He was happy and content at the end of his life. There are lots of videos/documentaries showing it. He had strong faith. He originally refused to even do this song when producer Rick Rubin approached him with it.
@@Gutslinger I apologize, if I didn't speak the right words. "But did he" ... Hell, yes!! He did!!! And, he knew it!!! He was happy, content, but, that doesn't deny his pain, his hard life! And, this song, well, we felt it.. at least I did...
@@rebeccagibbs8794 I understand what you’re saying and I agree with you. At what cost has always been the question I’ve asked about him. There’s no denying he claimed his life back and lived the rest of his life with the love of his life and he left a lasting legacy. But, at what cost? Our questions are valid and in no way undermine this legend.

I heard this for the first time at a casino believe it or not. At the hard rock in MS. The video was playing on all the big screens and almost everyone on the Casino got quiet and was just captivated listening and staring up at the video. It was a crazy experience
Johnny really appreciated music. He had many covers, of all kinds of music and always put himself into it. You can't touch someone else's soul with your music if you don't put your own into it.
You two get ready for some emotions and feelings. This is Johnny at his best! Phil this video is RAW!!! and REAL...... That's Johnny... One of the best ever!
This is such an iconic and sad video for all those of us who've loved Johnny Cash's music down the years, and when at the end he closes the lid of his keyboard, it's like a final farewell to his own life. It's a real gut-wrencher. Rest in peace man. Only ever one 'Man In Black'. ❤ 🙋♂ ❤ 🙋♂
This is Johnnys song now! What to expect -- is emotions!!! I read that when Johnnys daughter heard and saw this- she said to him it sounds like you are saying good by. John looked at her and said "I am!" Gut wrenching... I can not imagine a parent telling me that. PAIN. Phil, no worries. Tears and emotions allow us to know we are still alive! Johnny was 71 when he died. He lived a long and fruitful life. He was a legend in his own time. Few can lay claim to that... Please you two take care and stay safe!!
Johnny Cash spent his entire musical career pouring every ounce of emotion into his craft. his life was anything but easy, and the loss, and pain, and his own failings when it came to his family weighed heavily on him. this song was written by Trent Reznor of Nine inch Nails, and from the perspective of a young man that has ruined their future, but Johnny made it his own as a man reflecting on his long life nearing it's end. There is a reason he will never fall out of the heart and soul of Country music. thank you for being respectful of him in your discussion .
i think he was telling us bout the drug abuse, emotional pain, and regret that he experienced over a lifetime and kinds of a look back with this last work. Shortly after completion of this first his wife of many years, june carter-cash,, passed followed shortly thereafter by John. glad that we still have him on record and cd.
Among those who make the lists ranking these things, Johnny's version is considered by most to be the #1 cover ever. I agree. Rick Ruben had to do some fast talking to get him to cover this, and Johnny's daughter begged him not to do the cover. Trent Reznor didn't like the idea initially because it was so personal to him. When Rick sent him a CD of the vocals he still wasn't sold on it, but when he received the video he said he got goosebumps and tears. He said it was like losing his girlfriend - and that it wasn't his song anymore. Johnny also made a cover of Chris Cornell's "Rusty Cage" as well; y'all should check both of them out. Now, another (totally unrelated) suggestion; I'd like you guys to check out "Woke Up Dreaming" by Joe Bonamassa. I generally like hard driving electric guitars, and he can deliver the goods on an electric, but I saw an acoustic performance by Joe that just blew me away. His dynamic volume control and clean picking was out of this world. He absolutely killed it. So y'all sit back and enjoy some acoustic blues with Joe 😊 th-cam.com/video/w768vbvOjfc/w-d-xo.html
I'm so glad that I had the opportunity to see him live in concert in Tulsa back in 1970. Having said that, this song is sooo amazing in regards to his life. It is difficult to watch. As we say here in Texas; Y'all be safe.
Johnny made this song his own. Every driven man has made sacrifices to achieve lofty goals. This song is a song of regret about not focusing more on the things that truly matter at the end. Johnny struggled with drug addiction at different points in his life. Looking at the photo of his mother on the wall and seeing his wife June so prominent in the imagery of the video, gives me the impression that he had regrets there as well. When we come to the end and can look back, we can all see the pain we inflict on others with our actions. The lost time and opportunities to spend precious time with those that matter. This is a masterful warning from a voice of experience that building an empire at the cost of hurting others is a fools errand.
Johnny was in awe of Trents lyrics for such a young man to come up with. Trents version relates to a man falling apart mentally as the album it comes from is basically about the demise of a man culminating in his suicide. Johnny i feel makes it about an old man's regret of his life choices as he nears his natural end
Quite possibly the greatest exit to a remarkable life and career. Thank you to “The Man In Black” for being so raw and real and sharing his talents with us. RIP Mr. Cash
Gets me every time I hear it 😢 it is one of my favourite songs sad we all have this to face when we loose a special love one .and it hurt to see Johnny like this but a great voice as always

Have you ever watched the movie”Walk the Line” it dictates Johnny’s life and how June saved him. He always wears black and if you listen to his song “Man in Black” you’ll get the true Johnny
Your reaction was spot on. Most of us cried when we saw this for the first time. Don’t be ashamed, ever. He was a very special artist and man.
A powerful message for all to learn from, in the end everything that is acquired becomes meaningless if you lose yourself in the process.
Obviously johnny has a huge catalog. His wife was country royalty 🤘❤️
Appreciate your comments & thanks for stopping by with us!
An Iconic Must Hear Classic Song With A Message Of Positivity,, Argent "Hold Your Head Up"...TRUST ME!!
😮😮😮I AM SHOOK!!!😮😮😮😮 This is the first song that Bar cried on....WOW!!!😮😮😮😮
You are not the first man to cry to this, and you won't be the least. Powerfully emotive song. Good reaction by both of you :)
EMOTIONAL LOVE YOUR REACTION
I Really Enjoy Your Reactions..Imagine Visitors From Another Galaxy Coming To Earth In Peace,, Billy Thorpe "Children Of The Sun" (Exclusive Video)..R.I.P. Billy 🙏❤️
"But did he??"
Well, duh..
That ending was twisting the knife!
Although Johnny Didn't Write This Track,, It Would Become The Perfect Track/Way For A Legendary Music Icon To Say Goodbye...R.I.P. Johnny🙏❤️ Thanks For ALL You Gave Us.
You guys are sweethearts and your reaction to an emotionally challenging video/song was a breath of fresh air.
Regrets and apologies. You get the feeling he would give up his career to go back and make things right and to not waste time.
Trent wrote this song, but after Jonny did it, he said it was his song now !
I heard this for the first time at a casino believe it or not. At the hard rock in MS. The video was playing on all the big screens and almost everyone on the Casino got quiet and was just captivated listening and staring up at the video. It was a crazy experience
What is amazing is how his impeccable voice carries through the whole song... Talent is immortal........................
Johnny really appreciated music. He had many covers, of all kinds of music and always put himself into it. You can't touch someone else's soul with your music if you don't put your own into it.
That`s how you own a cover
Yes his voice stayed strong and beautiful to the end. Love Johnny Cash.
Woo Hoo, first comment! All jokes aside, this version of this song has given many, many people goosebumps.
Favorite song by Johnny… 1 Piece At A Time!!! Funny Story:)
Love your reactions.
VIVA JOHNY CASH 🌷
Johnny has many great song, this is a classic.
Amazing Song Just a Masterpiece This Song Would Bring a Tear To a Glass Eye - RIP 😢 Johnny Cash
The first time I heard this song, I was riding a train, and got off crying. That had never happened to me before or since.
Great reaction video guys. This song is epic. You are made of stone if you feel nothing listening to this.
i think he was telling us bout the drug abuse, emotional pain, and regret that he experienced over a lifetime and kinds of a look back with this last work. Shortly after completion of this first his wife of many years, june carter-cash,, passed followed shortly thereafter by John. glad that we still have him on record and cd.
Wow !!! This is an iconic song. All the remorses of a broken life with all its regrets. This is an iconic masterpiece. ❤
I love the eding to this song... when he closes the piano it's like he's saying thank you and goodbye 😢😢
I've cried too. Every time. Saying goodbye to life in a nutshell.
an amazing man and artist, lived an amazing life, touched so many people, and his legacy will touch so many more.. he is missed..
When he closes the piano lid at the end it makrs me think of a coffin....I always cry when I listen to this song....
One of the most powerful videos ever made. Trent said this song became Johnny's and will always be his.
Great heartfelt reaction! I think everyone has regrets in life. Sometimes the bigger the life was, the bigger the regrets are.
Pure artistry from the Man in Black, one of two only artists inducted both in the Rock and Roll and Country Halls of Fame
Yrent no longer regards it his song.
I'm so glad that I had the opportunity to see him live in concert in Tulsa back in 1970. Having said that, this song is sooo amazing in regards to his life.
It is difficult to watch.
As we say here in Texas; Y'all be safe.
That was his truth. Everyone goes away in the end.
Dad, that sounds like you want to say goodbye.
Cash: Yes
Don’t worry mate, I defy any man to watch this video and not weep. It gets me every time. Great reaction
Johnny is in the rock roll gospel and country Hall Of Fame!!!!😂
I really love that reaction of YOU, and every time I see that song.. I really feel chills and tears .. THANK YOU
Thank you for tuning in! Glad you enjoyed it with us!
Johnny was in awe of Trents lyrics for such a young man to come up with. Trents version relates to a man falling apart mentally as the album it comes from is basically about the demise of a man culminating in his suicide. Johnny i feel makes it about an old man's regret of his life choices as he nears his natural end
Man in Black is a must hear from him, and it’s a song he did write.
This MUST HEAR Classic Comes With An Important Message For Us ALL & Something To Think About,, Ralph McTell "Streets Of London"
Your man felt the music and the pain...😢
Quite possibly the greatest exit to a remarkable life and career. Thank you to “The Man In Black” for being so raw and real and sharing his talents with us. RIP Mr. Cash
Gets me every time I hear it 😢 it is one of my favourite songs sad we all have this to face when we loose a special love one .and it hurt to see Johnny like this but a great voice as always
Another great Johnny Cash cover is "Hung My Head". Done really well and really grabs you.
He put the feels in this song for sure!
Got into him about 20 yrs ago - had an incredible life.
I don’t think I’ve ever gotten through this music video without shedding tears, ouff 😢
Phil, I’ve seen this video over a hundred times and I still have the same reaction you just had every single time. I think the older you get the more this video impacts you.
I've watched this video 25 times at least and it still brings tears.
I appreciate the thoughtful research and consideration of how he might relate to the lyrics.
Johnny Cash is in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Country Music Hall of Fame, Gospel Music Hall of Fame, Songwriters Hall of Fame.
One of the very few songs that have made me cry
Was just going to write what is below , just to say Trent didnt want to hear this at first but when he did , he was blown away and gave this this to Johnny RIP
I’ve been watching you guys forever and one of the most unique reaction channels on the tube, just rewatching this one and I can’t wait for yall to hit a half mil
this is know as the greatest cover of all time, make what you want of it.
Been listening to Johnny for years. His Folsom Prison concert is also good. Also his San Quentin concert. " I still miss someone" is one of my favorites that he did in the 60's.
