    When brand new, the bladder is almost like glued together in the opening. You have do what feels like tearing it apart to open it. That should really be shown in detail how it is done. For those coming for that; When taking off the slider at the top, and unfolding it, the part that should actually open is the first piece of plastic that sticks out from the top, the stiff kind-of-broad part. The start of the opening is not in the bend, which i though at first. If you look closely it looks to be welded at the edges, and there might be some air trapped between the actual weld, and what is actually the opening (Which also looks to be welded together).
    For measure; I guess the force required to open mine the first time was roughly 1kg.

    A little tip for drying after washing. The ring for a small mouth Mason jar lid fits perfectly in the opening to allow for drying after washing. I use a spring clip on the seam at the bottom of the bag to hang it upside down and dry out.

      For the last year or so, I've been using a loop of string threaded through where the tube attaches to the reservoir for hanging. I like it better than the spring clip and it opens the bottom (top while hanging) of the reservoir more for better air circulation.

    I've just bought my reservoir, and have had absolutely no problem opening the slider. Perhaps there's been a material change. My only negative is echoed by others. The bite valve cover should be standard and an instruction manual would be rather helpful rather than searching on TH-cam! Same applies to their excellent rucksacks. I'm still finding the secret features of my Stratos pack, which I absolutely love.

    I had the same issue with disconnecting the hose from the bite valve and the bottom part (I don't know the technical term)
    As it turns out soaking both ends in warm to hot water (from the faucet, not boiling off the stove hot) for 5 mins or more loosens the grip (just work it a little) and you can detach the hose completely. The solution was shared here by Osprey, I was having issues and tried the suggestion and it worked!!

    I bought an Osprey hydration pack, and I'll probably give it away. It's heavy, overly-complicated, and loaded with tricky features that don't seem to work as well as intended. It seems like this pack was a test platform for a bunch of designers' experimental ideas, which is great if they work, but frustrating when they don't. I'll take it to the trail for testing, to see if it'll grow on me, but my first impression is that someone really over-thought this one.

    I have several platypus and camelbak hydro-like bags. I simply do not like them. Depending on the size they reduce the overall pack volume forcing you to put gear in the external pockets. AND no matter what smartwater bottles are cheaper. *HOWEVER* There is a time and place for the osprey model. Sure they weigh just a little more with the ridged stiffener on the larger models but until you've experienced trying to insert into a partially full pak...
    The part about the sloshing and the other quick-connect seems counter intuitive. [a] having the tall quick-connect is cool because you do not have to stick you hand deep into the pack to make the connection. This is a stronger reason than "switching sides". [b] but the combination of features does not seem to support the "invert and suck the air to reduce sloshing"
    The prices are pretty good and on par with the competition. The other accessories also seem useful.

    Why hang the reservoir with the sealed end at the bottom, instead of having the opening at the bottom to drip dry. Why use the magnet instead of having it hang dry? Using the magnet doesn't allow the water to drip down and dry?

  • @frankrunner2620

    What about using my hydration reservoir for beer? I like to drink a beer after running - when I'm not driving home. Being on the public transit system it becomes questionable as to whether or not drinking a beer constitutes a breach of the law, and hiding it in the reservoir is a prefect solution.
    I have thought about the fact that beer generates gas inside the reservoir, and that could cause it to burst - so I drink often enough to prevent the buildup of gas, and don't lean back on the reservoir while riding the train or bus.
    Should I avoid beer, or any other beverage that produces gases inside the reservoir?

      @ospreypacks  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Audun, great question! We recommend filling it half full with water and lemon juice mixture, sloshing it around a bit and then letting it freeze all the way. Generally that takes a few hours so leaving it in overnight and letting it thaw the next morning works well.

    great product but comes with a lot of poor and lack of instructions. i just bought a 2.5 L pack but it does not have a backplate? so i have no idea when they say the new bags come with a backplate, it doesn't. also how does a company assume that its customers will know how to use the product with absolutely no instructions whatsoever? if it wasn't for TH-cam, i wouldn't have known how to use the bite valve. my water wouldn't come out at first and i wonder why bags don't come with a standard cover on the bite valve like every other brand? i mean if I'm gonna spend $90 on a hydration bag, I'd at least expect a cover for the bite valve, it's just standard hygiene that should be included. i bought this because of the company's value in a lifetime warranty so hopefully it holds up.

We state this on the hangtag and product pages and we apologize that was confusing for you. We made this video and link to it from the reservoir materials in hopes of making the opening process easier. With the slider piece, customers should not be afraid to rip the top open; sometimes it's easy and sometimes it requires some elbow grease.

      Hello, the Talon 22 can fit either a 3L or 2.5L - it really depends on the length of your trip and if you prefer a rigid backing on your reservoir. The 3L is nice for longer days on the trail but the 2.5 is nice for lighter days. Cheers!

    Is it possible to totally disconnect the hose on both ends ? I'm afraid to use too much force on it, as it is hard to remove the end where it is attached to the reservoir

    • @ospreypacks
      @ospreypacks  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Oz, you can completely disconnect the hose on both ends. The fitting is probably pretty tight near the bottom of the reservoir from the factory but if you run it under warm water to help loosen it and then apply a fair amount of force, it will come out. The fitting may stay in the hose when you pull it out but that also be removed once the hose is disconnected. Let us know if you're still having trouble and we can make further suggestions.

The cold will kill all of the bacteria that collects in there while also drying out the reservoir. If you still have questions, our CS team is happy to make some other recommendations. @@ospreypacks According to the Mighty Google, freezing does not kill bacteria, it only renders them inactive. Some biology labs store bacteria at temperatures far below what a home freezer can achieve. And it's not bacteria that causes mold, it's a fungus, which freezing in a home freezer probably doesn't kill either.

    Why do you recommend not using bleach?

    • @ospreypacks
      @ospreypacks  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Pedro, if not diluted and rinsed out properly, bleach can be very harmful to drink if any residue is left in the reservoir. Also, bleach may compromise the seams, making it harder for the reservoir to hold water. We recommend using lemon juice. You can find more cleaning tips here: www.osprey.com/us/en/fitting-learning/pack-care - Thanks!

    • @frankrunner2620

      I have been using a diluted bleach solution for cleaning all of my other hydration reservoirs for years. I would pour in a capful of bleach into about 1 pint of water, slosh it around for 5-10 seconds, let it run through the hose, then shake out and let the bladder hang upside-down to dry out. It prevented the buildup of mold in the hose and fittings. I never used to rinse out until I was ready to use again, thinking that the water I used to rinse might cause mold to grow.
      After watching the video, I will be using lemon juice instead. Makes sense. Maybe use lemon juice in plain water to drink too - I have read that it helps with electrolytes.

    Hi Osprey, I've just bought the Radial 26. I was just wondering if I can add a reservoir into the laptop compartment? If so which size is the most appropriate? Thanks

    • @ospreypacks
      @ospreypacks  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Joe, the Radial 26 was designed for bike commuting so the designers left a reservoir sleeve out. While you could easily fit a 3L in the back compartment, there is no hidden hole for the hose to connect through so you'd have to use the zipper to hold it in. This pack was designed more to hold water bottles but could potentially be rigged to fit a reservoir. Hope that helps!

    • @ospreypacks

      If you use lemon juice or one of our cleaning tablets, you can fill the reservoir half full, slosh the solution around and let it fully freeze overnight. You can also freeze after each use to prevent any bacteria from growing and help the reservoir last longer. Lastly, there is generally no need to suck the excess air out but it could take an extra few seconds for water to reach up through the tube. Cheers!

    I bought my Osprey 3ltr Hydra pack on Osprey's reputation for making quality equipment. The Hydra pack shows every sign of quality but has a couple of very dumb features. Firstly the routing loops at the quick detachable connector are too small. There is no way to pass the disconnector through it, so one must fight with the bottom connector to change the tube from left to right hose feed. Secondly, Osprey evidently doesn't want you to use the Hydration system with another brand of pack. As the size of the opening to attach the hydration pack to the main pack, is too small, so the user has to come up with another method of attaching. We pay good money for quality gear and it is disappointing that small things like the above have not be thought through properly.

It was almost impossible to change from the standard tube to the insulated tube. In addition, the connection to the bladder was so loose that it is a great risk to pull out the tube from det bladder.
