Have you done a review on the Derwent intense? I am your newest subscriber from Australia. I followed an affiliated link to Arteza and had to give my email address to see their products but after doing so, and before I saw any products I was informed by a pop up that they do not send their products to Australia. Ok I thought and went away thinking nothing more about it. Until my phone was going off 3 times a day with emails from them about their products and sales. I unsubscribed but I thought it ironic. Enjoyed hearing about your arteza story and have subscribed because I adore your accent. I am an AusPom as my parents emigrated when I was 6yrs old but I must've been Irish in a previous life I think lol. Love to your furbaby & best wishes to you & your family.
A great video Harry! Just like the others you have done. I too am disabled and starting my art again after being away for over 30 years. I was a chef in that time, so I am switching from one for of art to another. Thank you for all of your reviews and information, it and you are a tremendous help :)
+mark brown I know exactly what you mean mate, I must admit, I am very fortunate in that I get a War Pension due to how I became disabled and to be absolutely honest, it is probably about what I could earn working in any case due to my lack of intelligence and experience. I'd swap it all in a heartbeat to still be able bodied and still serving in the Army, but we very rarely get what we want. Thanks a million mate for your comment and support and I hope art is helping you as much as it is for me. All the best Mark
mark brown I am excited to hear about a fellow artist and chef! I find that these two art forms overlap in many wonderful ways! I also have disabilities. Learning to adapt and being creative has helped me so much to cope with these changes. The very best to you on your new artistic pursuits!
Just found you and subscribed, great info! Love your voice, my Mum and Dad from Ireland, Dublin, and Inchicore. I am not an artist but love playing with color pencils and have quite a few sets. Thank you for sharing with us.
Hi Michelle thank you so much for stopping by the channel and for your kind comments. I wouldn't call myself an artist either so I think we are very similar. Also I know the sharpener you are referring to, I have one and they really are fantastic, my only criticism of the sharpener is, and to be fair it is perhaps more in my head than an actual fact; but it feels like the Sharpener takes so much off the pencil. But like I say this is probably more in my head than factual. Any way thank you so much for stopping by and I look forward to chatting more with you.
Hi Harry - I love using the Strathmore 400 Series Colored Pencil paper you showed. And of course the Stillman & Birn sketchbooks. Good group of erasers as well. The Signo UM-153 is an awesome pen, I use it ALL the time. Great idea with the old paint brush. Excellent review and timely. Thanks Harry. Cheers mate. - Marty
I use quite a bit of Strathmore paper I think it is really good quality paper. Thanks a million mate for your comment mate and your support, all the best Marty mate and talk to you soon.
A very informative video! Thank you! May I ask, how do you sharpen your Faber Castell Eraser Pencil? I tried to sharpen mine using a regular sharpener but the wood holding onto the eraser tip began cracking(?). Am I supposed to sharpen it using an xcto knife instead? Thanks in advance:)
My Panasonic electric sharpener does well with my Prismacolor pencils. It also works with Polychromos and Albrecht Durer-Luminance are too big, but do work with the Dahle hand crank sharpener. The small hand sharpeners tend to break the pencil and the lead gets stuck. To sharpen the blade, insert a woodless graphite pencil.
I'm soo curious about the colour pencil paper by Strathmore! I use their watercolour papers and I like them quite a bit. I think for my kind of techniques with coloured pencil (I don't use solvents, occasionally use a copic or brushmarker colourless blender) it'll work very well. Nice selection of paper there Harry, I'd love to try doin coloured pencil art on the aquafine hot press. I love using my polychromos on Canson Montval paper, very nice feel to that. I never thought of taping tiny pencils onto a longer pencil with scotchtape..brilliant!! The extenders are a wee bit pricey so I shall try this out when I have tiny nubs of pencils. I have the pilot choose white gel pen as well, I love it!! And the uniball signo..I have the thinner nib one, that one's good too. I should get the one with the thick nib as well. Lovely essential tools video Harry, very useful and fun to watch too!
Great video, on the pencil sharpeners I got the M&R one that Marty recommended and it works great on my Polychromos and Luminence. I also hold the pencil in my left hand and turn the sharpener with my right instead of the other way round, I believe it works well and hope it will also work for the prismacolors my sister is sending me from America, I must admit after all I've heard I'm slightly terrified that she has spent a lot of money that might be wasted lol x
This was very helpful to those of us who are just starting out with pencils. I like that you give several companies to choose from. I am going through your videos since I just found you.
Harry, what do you use to cover up your work so you don't smudge it. I used a ruler for lines and found as I moved it is actually smudged my work. What do you suggest? Thanks heaps. Check you email as I sent you one yesterday, Australian Time.
When my first polychromo became to little to use I had no idea what to do. I couldn't bring myself to throw it away because "That's $0.35!!! :(" So I held on to it. And the next and the next until I had about 15 little bits. Then I was watching a tutorial and they just casually put their bit of a pencil into a pencil extender. O_O "Wha- ... you mean..... all this time ... you know what I don't care! Where can I buy one! Or 5?" :) Great video so people don't find out the hard way. Thanks!
Tmarie2u I know what you mean, I would never have known about pencil extenders unless I had seen them in a video and asked what it was attached to that persons pencil. They really are fantastic and like you say, these pencils are so expensive that you want to use them until every mm of pencil is used. Thank you for stopping by and commenting. In case you are still looking to get an extender, I have a written review of this video on my blog coloured pencil reviews. Thank you so much for stopping by the channel.
I have caran d'ache and Marco Renoir, but I prefer CARAND'ACHE 100% , but both of their are good pecil's! my daughter has Faber-Castell Polycromos. She loves too. thank you so much to sharing this video with us.♡
Please Harry, colud you tell me which brand is the best sharpener for Prismacolors from? (Not sure if I formulate the question properly but hope it was grammatically comprehensible, sorry for my approximate english🙈)
Any specific sort of colored pencils that goes better with blending sticks/paper blenders, than others? My collection of color pencil sets are limited to van gogh, 36, Faber castell art grip, think 36 as well, the artgrip aquarelle, also 36, and the derwent inktense, 72 set... got a few more, but not exactly that I have the name of the brand of them. They do all feel sort of hard towards the paper, except the van gogh, they break almost every time...but it's like I can't really layer them and make them blend that much. Not even with the blending stick.
For the mars Technico it’s better to take the end off of the pencil either the lead extended by 2-3 cm and twist the sharpener around the end of the lead with the lead still in the pencil, it lowers the chance of snapping the lead whilst sharpening
The Faber Castell sharpener that opens with 3 slots ( wide barrel, normal, and a Colored pencil slot) works well with all my pencils. The prismacolor even. The Colored pencil slot is very good because it gives a very good point without wasting too much pencil. Have you tried it?
New subbie for you😀 I enjoy your reviews. I would like to see artwork that is created with the demonstrated medium. Could you please tell me the brand of the very last eraser you show here. It is the one you recommend most, as you shared that it's your favourite. Trying to find the Tombow at Blick. I am in the process of trying mixed media papers and substrates, as I work in a variety of media. Would you like to review mixed media substrate options in the future? Thank you for taking time to share your reviews with us!
Rhue Chantal hi Rhue thank you so much for subscribing and I am so pleased you enjoy the videos . The last Eraser I showed was the TomBow Mono Eraser. This video was one of my first videos if you go to my more recent video, all the products I review I submit a speed drawing of art I’ve created with the product. I’ve done one or two mixed media videos but I will do more. Thank you so much for checking out my reviews and I look forward to more wonderful feed back from you.
I've got to say, I've never actually done a drawing for anyone other than my Mother and Father in law, I don't think I'm good enough yet to be producing work for other people. However, from what I understand, if you are using really good lightfast coloured pencils and you are going to frame behind glass there is no real need for fixative. I believe there are fixatives that will help enhance the light fastness if your pencils aren't particularly lightfast in themselves. One of my favourite coloured pencil artists, Lisa from Lachri Fine Art, does not use fixative on her coloured pencil work and her stuff is amazing, but she uses Caran Dache Luminance and Faber Castell Polychromos. I hope this helps you, I know it is a vague, sorry I couldn't be more direct. Thank you so much for your comment and question I really appreciate it and love trying to help others with the amazing stuff I've learnt from the likes of Lisa and other awesome artists.
+Coloured Pencil Reviews Thanks Harry. I've seen some of your art work that you've posted on instagram and I think it's great! I've watched Lisa's videos too and love her surrealistic style. I had heard her say she didn't use fixatives, but have heard other artists say they used them, so that's why I wondered if you did. With you being in the UK too, I thought you'd be better placed to recommend the best fixative that's easy enough to get in the UK as most of the artists I follow on TH-cam are in the US.
+Jane Kirkwood (Artsy Otternut) I know that Winsor and Newton and Daler and Rowney do some excellent fixatives and I have heard that if you apply the fixative on your work half way through, it can almost regenerate the tooth of the paper allowing you to continue adding layers. If you copy and paste or click the link it will take you to some fixatives that would definitely do the job for you. Obviously you don't have to buy them from this particular store, you could have a look about and see if you can get them locally or cheaper. I know Hobbycraft do these brands if you have one close to you. bit.ly/1QpZQZl
Hi Harry, great review, But! Were those Daler-Rowney Sapphire brushes you use for applying oil? That is sacrilege! They are an amazing watercolour brush, I need a lie down to ease the shock, anyway, i`ll let you off this time lol, Keep up the great work :-)
Hi Debbi, it is the TomBow Mono Eraser, www.theartgearguide.com/art-supplies-i-use/ if you copy and paste or click this link it will take you to a new page on my site where I list all the supplies that I use and you can then purchase them from Amazon. It is an awesome wee eraser.
Nice video again Ivor, tho zest-it does not destroy your brushes (it is a brush cleaner aswell as it is a paint thinner XD) it is usually the papers with rougher textures that will destroy your brushes.
Thanks Jen, I knew that zestit was a brush cleaner and other solvents like it, but I could never understand why so many artists would say to have separate brushes for this. Thanks a million Jen for stopping by and commenting I love reading your comments.
+Coloured Pencil Reviews it's just wise to keep separate brushes for separate jobs, like it is better to not use your watercolor brushes for acrylics (as there are brushes for each kind of paint) because acrylics will destroy your water color brushes. when i paint my sculptures any brush is doomed to die an early death (same when working with solvent on sanded paper) so i use very cheap nylon brushes for that job :)
i love tht you reply to literally every comment.. here's to hoping you reply to mine too.. So which colorpencils of dervent do u recomment. colorsoft or artist? in planning to buy a set of 120 dervent artist. how is it? i cant find any good video of an amazing drawing with artost pencils.. im confused?
Yato Daniel Hi there Yato, you are absolutely correct about the Derwent Artists not having much in the way of videos or images showing their capability. Unfortunately I only have a 24 set of the Artists but I will be getting the 120 set as soon as I can afford them. The thing is I personally love the Derwent Artist, but a lot of people don't and that is absolutely fine. They are a very hard core but if used on the right paper they do produce beautiful results, at least for me. The Derwent Coloursoft on the other hand, are a bit like the British version of Prismacolor, a bit like them. The Coloursoft obviously have a soft and creamy core but they don't break all the time like the Prismacolor as so many others have complained about. It's really difficult to recommend between them both because I don't know what style of Colored pencil art you enjoy. However, on the bases of so many others I have spoke to I would say the Coloursoft. My only issue with the Coloursoft is the fact they only have 72 colors as opposed to the Artists 120. However, Derwent are releasing a new pencil called ProColour which I have been so fortunate for Derwent to have sent me the full set, again 72 colors. I am not allowed to say much about them, but I would advise you wait until our review of them is published in COLORED PENCIL Magazine, which will be very soon. I hope this has helped you a bit
Caran dache usually give a sharpener as they only work.with their owm sharpener apparently..i dont like this in brands. I like choice. But ill try get urs too. I sent u a message on insta with what faber recommended for faber poly pencils
You think if we could send a rover to Mar's and talk to it via satellites for years we could design one type of pencil sharpener that would work for multi type of colored pencils or charcoal pencils without breaking down the sharpener thru the shaving....I mean it's pretty basic concept that could be made better....thanks for video I'm now in buying a sharpener and I'm really doing my research after watching your video and others I learned I've have to buy multi sharpeners which for financial limited budget its hard... but I guess in away fir the postive sifmde I really have to do my do diligence and research on sharpeners, I've learned more than my poor old Brian cells can absorb it's taking up valuable art fun learning skills...lol cheers...👩🎨🎨 mikelle newyork mom
Signo ink is the best gel ink on the market bar none; it's top archival quality, it's uniquely formulated to rest nicely on the top of the surface and all of their colored inks perform excellently on dark surfaces, not just the white ink. Uni's most opaque Signo lines are the Broads, the Angelics, and the Noble Metals. Signos outperform Gelly Rolls every single time, especially with the metallics (most metallic gel pens go all silver on black paper not matter what color the ink is supposed to be, only a few brands maintain their true color on black paper. Gelly Roll lines are usually okay on black paper but they're not the best). I would never use Gelly Rolls on anything I want to keep for years; Gelly Roll ink is claimed to be waterproof but it's a crapshoot, sometimes it passes the water test and other times it fails. They have poor quality control like Prismacolor and have just become pretty cheap all the way around. But all Uni Signo lines are consistent top performers. You have the ultra-popular 1.0 mm Uni Signo Broad white; you can get a 0.7 mm white from the Uni's Angelic line if you want to replace that Gelly Roll. It's the same Signo ink, just in a finer point and leaner barrel.
+Heather Leisure that is awesome Heather I wasn't aware of that I'll definitely look into getting myself the 0.7mm because you are absolutely correct about the ink quality and archival rate I must admit I was not aware of. Thanks again Heather and thank you for stopping by my channel.

Commenting for TH-cam
I happen to think Amaza Pens are the best Gel Ink on the Market. they are juicy smooth, I love them.

I have caran d'ache and Marco Renoir, but I prefer CARAND'ACHE 100% , but both of their are good pecil's! my daughter has Faber-Castell Polycromos. She loves too.
