Ram Pump Standpipe Placement

  • The ram pump sometimes has to have a standpipe if the required head pressure cannot be gained within 100 feet of pipe. The placement of the standpipe is important. If it is too close to the source and does not have enough pressure feeding it, the ram pump can pull water out of the stand pipe and introduce air that will stop the pump. It is best to install the ram pump closer to the ram pump so that the standpipe will stay full when the pump cycles.

i dont have one of these, as i live on a boat. I just find these interesting. Thanks for taking the time to put this together. Yes, clear tube is expensive.

    hello.
Why do you put a bicycle tube in the pump? And if I make the part where the tube is inserted longer or install two check valves, will the water pressure become stronger?

What is the diameter of the thread on the outlet valve? Would I be able to attach a hosepipe with a standard hose to tap connector?

That was neat, seeing the pump suck the stand-pipe down to draw air, cool.

Yes it's neat to see on video... not so much when your pump install is doing that haha

Seth, I understand the reasoning for stand pipe placement you explained in the video, but can you place the stand pipe too close to the ram pump? Any guidance on placement? I only have about 3-3.5 feet of drive pipe fall on one inch PVC. The drive pipe is approximately 140 feet long.

Typically you want to have the standpipe 25 feet or more away from the pump. This allows for
the pressure wave to have time to cycle. However the pump can still cycle if your drive pipe is only ten or fifteen feet long. It will just cycle fast.

@LandtoHouse thanks Seth! I'll give it a try in a couple weeks and see how it goes.

    Firstcomment.
I typically use a larger size. Going to the standpipe and smaller coming off.

Yes a large supply pipe and standpipe then smaller drive pipe works well.

Seth, any advantage to using a standpipe that is a larger diameter than the drive pipe? Currently, I'm using a 1" drive pipe (approximately 130' long) and a 3/4" diameter delivery pipe. TIA. I wish mine cycled as fast as the one in the video, mine cycles about every 4 seconds.

@@05excursionltd When I tried switching to a foot valve, I couldn't get the cycle or I just wasn't white long enough. I'm used to about a second and a half, you gotta click

Legend. I bought some clear pipe a few months ago for a project.
I know the cost is really hefty on those. 😬
Thanks Seth for the lesson. Much appreciated.
