This masterful biography has given me impetus to hear the music of Elgar. I am exceedingly grateful to have been touched, rewarded, inspired by this tremendous documentary. ❤😂
I was at Malvern today. Every day I walk past where Elgar's house in Worcester stood, since demolished. I think his Enigma Variations is my favourite - and certainly one to take with you up the hills.
I saw the Delius picture 50 some odd years ago and it's haunted me ever since. Now Elgar. What a gorgeous show. My word what a great director Russell was... until he wasn't any longer. Always wondered where all that talent and vision and skill went... and why.
This is a dramatised documentary, but there's no dialogue - a rule imposed by the editor of 'Monitor' and the narrator here, Huw Wheldon, presumably to stop it seeming 'soapy.' But Russell used this restriction brilliantly to focus on the music and deliver memorable images.
Ken Russell's Song of Summer, about Delius and Eric Fenby, is even better! Thank you for posting.
I would love to see ALL of Russell's BBC composer 😢bios
Elgar was a devoted Wolverhampton Wanderers FC fan and would cycle to their home games.
Stunning - I miss KR who loved and appreciated the subjects of his films. There will never be another KR. 💔

Nothing like Ken Russell. Mad genius.
Wow, that‘s a great documentation! ✨✨✨
I didn‘t know Elgar enjoyed horseback riding… Now I like him even more! 😉
Thank you for sharing this! 🙏🍀

thank you for uploading
Quite an astonishing musician and composer.
His works are very
melodic.
Many parallels to
Paul McCartney - or vice versa.

Unsurprisingly, Elgar wrote his two greatest compositions late in life, when he discarded his romanticized view of British Imperialism
Is Elgar a great composer? Just asking. I love his music, by the way.
Elgar's music is hardly known on the continent not to speak of Gilbert ansd Sulivan operas which are completely ignored.
Unlike Elgar, Ralph Vaughan Williams rejected imperial honors. He turned down a knighthood and appointment as King's Court musician!
