I saw this last night and there wasn’t a single preview. Has this ever happened to anyone? I’m assuming it’s because the theater wanted to pack in as many movies as possible that day during Oscar season? On another note, I enjoyed this film and the innovation.
I thought this film was terrible. The dialogue was cringe-inducing at best (there was a particular monologue towards the end that was so bad I almost left the theater). All the conflict felt contrived, and the performances really didn’t do it for me. Cinematography was innovative but that wasn’t enough to make up for the ham-fisted script. I agree Chris Sullivan was the standout though!
Can you tell me how you use clips from movies and longer scenes without copyright issues on TH-cam? I would like to know more so I can do movie reviews of my own. Please help. Thank you.
(POTENTIAL)SPOILER GUESS: "The Presence" is one of the family members who dies by the film's end. It's been said that spirits perceive and navigate time differently than the living and the presence may be re-experiencing the past and the events that lead to their death(possibly in a loop). My guess would be the daughter, as that would be the most tragic.
but it was the son that died so i thought it was him reliving the past and i guess trying to save his sister (at the end he was seen in the mirror too). But it doesn't make sense because the 'presence' went to the son's room and wrecked it when he was talking about that girl he and his friends bullied in their school. There was also Nadia's character that was being mentioned as potentially the presence at the start?
I absolutely loved this movie. It was surprisingly clever and well shot. Its visual storytelling style reminded me of I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives In the House/Paranormal Activity/A Ghost Story.
Steve Soderbergh is wonderful and innovative with a lot of his work. Looking forward to this!!!!! I love how the camera he used is [almost] attainable by anyone (it's like 5 thousand dollars, lol.)
i watched it blind (no trailers, didn't even know what it was about) and guessed it was a ghost within a few minutes. I dunno if that's anything but this is such a refreshing take on the genre. highly recommend if you haven't watched a movie in a while to give this a shot
I thought the movie was horrible. The steady cam used throughout the film, I didn't think added anything more to the story and only forced me to look down every now and then to avoid feeling nauseous. The sub plots of the alleged illegal act that took place and the serial killers connection to the two victims didn't go anywhere. You didn't feel any connection between family members and in one shot when they're eating dinner, the mother father are sitting at the opposite ends of the table and the two children who hated each are sitting together at one side making you feel more like the filming a television show rather than a realistic movie. And of course you have to add a Poltergeist medium into the mix because that has never been done before. Unfortunately, I felt like I was watching a movie that was submitted to a low budget film festival rather than a major motion picture. 😢
I enjoyed the opening 2 minutes, and the following 10 minutes or so were interesting. I also directly compared it to Skinamarink, and the more obvious Lake Mungo, before seeing this review. Ultimately, I didn't much care for the film overall. Acting was mostly good, and the father was for sure the stand out, in my opinion. I just felt like it would've made for a better 15 minute short film.
Was so disappointed seeing this after watching the trailers. Thought I was going to finally get a new good haunted house film… I should’ve done more research and realized it was a family drama, that is *my* bad, fair… But marketing this to a classic horror fan as a classic horror film was *their* mistake… I think Last Night in Soho is a better version of this concept. Takes similar ideas (the traumas, plot twists with the ghost, mystery) but does it better. I still got the horror that was marketed to me, gorgeous (but not gimmicky) cinematography, and a good plot. I think The Presence could have been absolutely amazing but needed different (more transparent) marketing and a bit more time with the characters and serial killer idea. TLDR; the advertising failed me and I’m disappointed, moreso because I really like the overall concept of the movie.
I went in thinking it was going to be a SCARY movie, walked out with my heart thru the wringer and it may be my favorite movie now. Definitely can’t wait to watch it again after that ending
This one of those movies that keeps you thinking for a while after you watch it. So much so that it demands a second viewing to catch all those details. You understand why the ghost did each of it's actions from an entirely different perspective on a repeat viewing. Left me shook and utterly bamboozled. Loved it. last few seconds of the movie really did it.
Looking forward to seeing this one! Also just saw The Colors Within which I know you saw a while ago. Very lovely movie and I've always thought Naoko Yamada's directorial eye has been unique within anime. Hope you do a video on it as I'm worried it's not finding as much box office success as it deserves given how empty my screening was.
I think my biggest problem is that the marketing made it seem like it was going to be flat out horror and it was very much a family drama with a ghost. As well as some plot points / dialogue being unnecessary (the whole illegal activity with the parents stuff), didn't feel that the daughter had a strong relationship or talk with her mother or brother, which makes sense as to why she felt so alienated, but they didn't even have a conversation. I feel like that could have gone a long way. The dad was great but had a bit too much screen time for his overall importance to the story. Overall an interesting movie that I will watch again once it comes to streaming.
I'm gonna be seeing this a 2nd time tomorrow. I thought this film was excellent. Written well, shot well, the performances were amazing. It's a movie that IMO warrants more than one view. Between this and Companion (Which I haven't seen but am looking forward to), this could be one of the best January's for films ever!!
This is why I always look up the spoiler review before watching a good movie. I hate wishing I could go back in and watch it again. Great movies are meant to be viewed over and over.
Just wondering, have you watched I’m Still Here? It’s a Brazilian film that speaks about the dark times in Brazil during the dictatorship. It has recently been nominated for the Oscars, and its main actress has won a Golden Globe.
Wow,..this sounds great! Very unique, and like you, I really like movies that linger in your head for days. There is another movie that is somewhat from the perspective of a ghost called "I Am the Pretty Thing that Lives in the House", which is an Osgood Perkins directed movie. You should check it out sometime, I really liked it, though it's slow & quiet, it makes you think, similar to this one based from your review.
Movie was pretty good. First half is a lil slow, just setting stuff up but the second half picks up and serves a solid conclusion. Loved the camera work and long take shots. My score is a 7.5/10
With the last scene of the movie, I definitely wasn't 100% sure about what I had seen previously, and I did just like CS said, I thought about the motivations for everything the presence did throughout the movie. Very clever, and it holds up imo. I wouldn't classify this as a horror film, but a great psychological thriller with supernatural elements.
I'm seeing this tomorrow.. i have to admit, I wish you hadnt mentioned that we're watching from the POV of the ghost.. unless that fact is very obvious. I would have liked to have figured that out myself.
I love how the whole plan of the ghost is told. I love how at first it is watching family almost zone of interest hidden camera like. The ghost is doing this to see who is easily manipulated and venerable. It is revealed that this ghost in real life had some sort of intimate relationship with the daughter. It needs to do this objective to move on to other side. Much like a ghost story. The ghost notices the son is hot headed and aggressive so that’s why it wakes him up at end cause he knows he will seriously do something to this kid who is doing this unspeakable act to his sister. This completes process of the presence moving on but also losing another person in process the son who died. The son will now haunt the family forever
Despite hearing not great reviews, I decided to see it anyways tonight. And yeah, didn’t care for it. It was unique, I’ll give it that. It also made me super dizzy. I closed my eyes a few times to get relief. One time I even fell asleep because I was kind of bored lol. The ending is decent, but doesn’t make up for the rest of the movie.
I think we have to wait until October. Neon is going to release Shelby Oaks, but first they have some bangers coming up in the pipeline: Presence (right now) , The Monkey (Feb. 21), He’ll of a Summer (April 18)
Just watched this wow I'm down away , I loved it such a original idea and it definitely sticks with you after, definitely a supernatural drama not a horror movie in my onion , but so we'll done !
That Neon commercial at the end was interesting. I realize that critics often discuss future releases they're looking forward to seeing, but I never thought they were being paid to say that. Then again, as you've stated since becoming a filmmaker, your form of "reviews" are not meant to be critiques in the truest sense. Still, it's a little disconcerting.
It's easily one of the most anticipated horror movies of 2025 and the release is around the corner so why shouldn't he bring it up for his channel viewers/regulars who wouldn't mind the reminder?
Keep in mind Neon picked up his film Shelby Oaks for distribution. They’re probably getting some mileage out of his TH-cam channel while they got him contracted already. It doesn’t feel entirely out of place here though considering Neon also release Presence
I agree wholeheartedly that I can't let go of this its almost as though it is now haunting me I honestly thought that it was very well done with all the camera shots the pov it was just a very interesting movie and I loved it
I just left the theater... SPOILER TALK* ...... so her brother was the ghost all along right? Was the ghost/he watching his own life replay as a ghost, because he was actually alive through the entire film, or no? I loved it, but I'm lost on parts. What did the mother mean when she said " he came back to save you " ? I get he was the ghost, but was the mirror scene the only scene in actual present time or? What are yalls thoughts 👀 was the daughter actually the 2nd victim and this was her *2nd chance reincarnation right before death* ?
The spirit is tyler from the future where he died, but it's unclear if that future was the same one we experienced in this movie or if it was an alternative ending where his sister and him die and he was stuck there because his spirit was in unease. The psychic mentioned that the spirit was confused and also trying to figure itself out, and that it was particularly close to Chloe, but she never could identify the spirit. She mentioned how spirits don't live in time how the living do, and that they can get jumbled in time, living in the past and future. The entire movie is present, the spirit itself is from the future and ended up being back in the house at the time they moved in, and over time figured out why he was there, ie protect Chloe. When they moved out at the end, I think he called his mother over to the mirror so he could give her peace and say goodbye before floating out of the house and leaving to the afterlife. I loved this movie. It was a slow burn but once the identity was confirmed and I looked back to all the scenes of the ghost interactions and it's behavior during certain times or with certain characters, it made it so much more clear to me. Idk. I loved it. It was like a puzzle that was missing a big piece in the middle and once I saw that last scene I started to replay all the parts where the ghost did something and wondering why it did it and it made sense now knowing Tyler was the spirit and why he would possibly do what he did. I feel like he shows himself to his mother at the very end because that's when the spirit realized both why he was there and who he was all along. Sorry for the rant I just loved the movie more than I expected to and I have no one to talk to about it 😅
Spoiler..... So if you remember when the lady with second sight came back to warn them. The ghost was there for an event that hadn't happened yet. She said she saw a window, pretty obvious why she said that now. She also said it was something that happened in the house. The ghost was the brother went back in time to save her. He was there to protect her from him. He was also angry with himself for not being a better brother to her and that's why he destroyed his room part of the way through. The final scene was clear to me that they were moving out after the events, as the lady explained, those who suffer trauma can have the door opened for them. The door cracked open for her after his death.
@joeyhoy1995 phenomenal explanation, in parts. When & how do you think Tyler died? I believe he OD'd on that couch and the line " he came back to save you " was referring to his family finding him dead (not outside the window) and I believe Chloe died on her bed in a past life & we're seeing the POV of Tyler who don't know when, why, what or who - as the Medium mentioned in regards to time.

I remember when I saw long legs in the theater, there were no previews, it just started .
Final scene is goated. Terrifying, shivers, and much much more. Awesome.
Can you tell me how you use clips from movies and longer scenes without copyright issues on TH-cam? I would like to know more so I can do movie reviews of my own. Please help. Thank you.
(POTENTIAL)SPOILER GUESS:
"The Presence" is one of the family members who dies by the film's end. It's been said that spirits perceive and navigate time differently than the living and the presence may be re-experiencing the past and the events that lead to their death(possibly in a loop). My guess would be the daughter, as that would be the most tragic.
Excellent guess
but it was the son that died so i thought it was him reliving the past and i guess trying to save his sister (at the end he was seen in the mirror too). But it doesn't make sense because the 'presence' went to the son's room and wrecked it when he was talking about that girl he and his friends bullied in their school. There was also Nadia's character that was being mentioned as potentially the presence at the start?
I thought this about halfway or so into the movie
@@EmanAslam-00988he trashed his own room because of his disgust at some of his actions when he was alive
I absolutely loved this movie. It was surprisingly clever and well shot. Its visual storytelling style reminded me of I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives In the House/Paranormal Activity/A Ghost Story.
Was that a paid advertisement for a different movie at the end? That was random and weird.
Steve Soderbergh is wonderful and innovative with a lot of his work. Looking forward to this!!!!! I love how the camera he used is [almost] attainable by anyone (it's like 5 thousand dollars, lol.)
What's the camera? This movie looked so nice
@palbo4 Sony A9 III
Yeah that last minute, with the mirror, gave me full-body chills, and movies don't usually do that for me.
Have to hand it to Chris, he can sell the shit out of a movie. I'm sold
i watched it blind (no trailers, didn't even know what it was about) and guessed it was a ghost within a few minutes. I dunno if that's anything
but this is such a refreshing take on the genre. highly recommend if you haven't watched a movie in a while to give this a shot
Trust me. It's better to spend your time with this film as opposed to Flight Risk!
Flight risk was super short and boring lol
you really think Stuckmann fans need to be told to go watch a Soderbergh before a Mel Gibson movie?
@@mattavelli5503 Gibson is a has been and a fool after all.
Nah. Flight Risk looks fun.
Flight Risk was great
Was so disappointed seeing this after watching the trailers. Thought I was going to finally get a new good haunted house film… I should’ve done more research and realized it was a family drama, that is *my* bad, fair…
But marketing this to a classic horror fan as a classic horror film was *their* mistake…
I think Last Night in Soho is a better version of this concept.
Shelby oaks trailer was promised months ago. Its 2025. Where is the trailer Chris?
It's not a horror. It's just an introspective family drama.
If you liked this check out "enter the void" its told from a ghost perspective
That movie was really trippy
ghost? hm... i'll have to watch it again - just thought it was an out of body experience (close enough, i guess)
It was just his soul wandering the whole movie lol till he got reincarnated. As his sisters baby🤢😂@360.Tapestry
That movie will mess most people up lmao
The visuals! Top notch
I watched this film on Sunday and I am STILL unpacking it! I wanna watch it for the second time to just experience it again lol
I'm gonna be seeing this a 2nd time tomorrow. I thought this film was excellent. Written well, shot well, the performances were amazing. It's a movie that IMO warrants more than one view. Between this and Companion (Which I haven't seen but am looking forward to), this could be one of the best January's for films ever!!
so did he give it Awesometacular or buy on Blu ray?
This is why I always look up the spoiler review before watching a good movie. I hate wishing I could go back in and watch it again.
Great movies are meant to be viewed over and over.
I love that you and Cody leach can not only see this movie way differently but all of January
Just wondering, have you watched I’m Still Here? It’s a Brazilian film that speaks about the dark times in Brazil during the dictatorship. It has recently been nominated for the Oscars, and its main actress has won a Golden Globe.
Looking forward to this one. When it comes to horror movie endings, The Orphange had an ending that was beautiful and heartwarming.
How many Halloween shirts do you have
Saw it yesterday really enjoyed it.
I got Enter The Void vibes pretty heavy from the trailer. Ill definitely check it out when I get the chance.
Please do a video on Neil Berger’s Inheritance (2024). It came out this weekend and it got absolutely no promotion. But it’s a great flick!
I'm seeing this tomorrow.. i have to admit, I wish you hadnt mentioned that we're watching from the POV of the ghost.. unless that fact is very obvious. I would have liked to have figured that out myself.
Very obvious the first shot of the film is the pov of the ghost, you’re gonna know pretty much imediately
The movie has been heavily marketed as such. This is the main shtick of the movie.
I hadnt seen any trailers for this before now, so i wasnt sure
The son was the presence.
This is one I really want to check out, looks great.
Can’t wait to see this; I love movies that don’t have a pretty 🎀 at the end
So it’s like the Others?
The ending makes the entire film a completely different film in a way. Love it the more I think about it
Sounds like this could be an interesting double feature with In A Violent Nature
The most fast-forwarded movie of all time.
Secret Window is one of my favourite movies, and it is also the first review of yours I saw!
It's watchable, quite interesting but nothing mind blowing as nothing much actually happens.
Off-topic comment. What did you think of "A real pain" movie. I enjoyed it. Just wondering your thoughts. Hope to see a video on it.
Absolutely utterly fantastic movie. Brilliant brilliant.
I’ve said the same thing as you. What a great January at the cinemas!
shelby oak update please?!
I think we have to wait until October. Neon is going to release Shelby Oaks, but first they have some bangers coming up in the pipeline: Presence (right now) , The Monkey (Feb. 21), He’ll of a Summer (April 18)
Chris you review is very similar to the one on Movies and Munchies. Both of you are featured on 5 Star Movie Reviews. Was it planned?
This or Wolf Man what should I go see tonight 🤔
wolf man was terrible
THIS THIS THIS
Just watched this wow I'm down away , I loved it such a original idea and it definitely sticks with you after, definitely a supernatural drama not a horror movie in my onion , but so we'll done !
That Neon commercial at the end was interesting. I realize that critics often discuss future releases they're looking forward to seeing, but I never thought they were being paid to say that. Then again, as you've stated since becoming a filmmaker, your form of "reviews" are not meant to be critiques in the truest sense. Still, it's a little disconcerting.
meh ...if he really is looking forward to it, and i believe he is, then he's just getting paid to promote something he would've supported regardless
Agree that movies this January have been excellent
Where is your movie at
Shill sells his film to Neon. He is owned by Neon. This is a Neon promotion.
Hack
Is it like a ghost story?
I agree wholeheartedly that I can't let go of this its almost as though it is now haunting me I honestly thought that it was very well done with all the camera shots the pov it was just a very interesting movie and I loved it
This film was marketed horribly wrong. It’s gonna throw a lot of people off
I just left the theater...
Originally, I was planning on catching Nosferatu tomorrow, but Presence is now my top choice for my Saturday morn screening.
I'd watch Nosferatu. I strongly disagree with the review and I think this movie was bad unfortunately
@amerkulovic3270 Thanks for your opinion on the film.
Reviews seem (mostly) positive, so I'll give it a shot. Have gift cards to use up, so if it is poor, then I am not chucking 'real' money down the drain.
Nosferatu been out for a month yo, how have you not seen it yet lol
@@andys8483 yea I saw the reviews as well and was hoping i would like it. Since you have the gift cards, give this movie a watch or both movies :)

I've seen scarier PG movies. That said this movie is actually quite good and doesn't try to scare you.
