      Yep. The genre has never been afraid of tackling the darker side of progress, and how certain aspects of our culture can be used against us.
      But the reality of what's happening the US is more nuanced than that. There are many avenues for free healthcare, even before obamacare had been a thing. And when you consider the population size of the US, the quality and speed at which you can receive health care is incredible relative to the rest of the 1st world. It's why we get people from Canada coming south to pay for healthcare in the states rather than wait for it in Canada. (20,000 patients yearly.)
      We need to bring that quality of healthcare without the need for insurance providers inflating the cost of every little thing, obviously, but the reality is the US healthcare system is significantly better than people meme it out to be. You can get better care faster than much of the rest of the world, and there are free healthcare options for people like me who can't afford insurance if you are willing to wait (an average time that's still less than the Canadian, Australia, or the UK.

      @@zxt5148 You don’t have to wait for healthcare if it’s a serious issue in Canada, and regardless, the reason wait times are longer is because everybody that has a health problem is getting it looked at. The same is not true here and it’s a goddamn shame. Being too poor to go to the doctor is sickeningly common in the US, and the fact you don’t recognize how prevalent that issue is proves to me you don’t have the proper perspective to discuss this issue in good faith.

    @SusCalvin 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    It was possible to call for TT without a policy. They just charged you a lot more for that service. TT prefers people to get subscription to them instead of making one-off calls. It ties you to their service.
    There is competition between Trauma Team and companies such as Meatwagon REO. In theory they have the groundwork in place to avoid "claim jumping" patients/customers. Sometimes they have firefights with eachother over a patient.

  • @SusCalvin
    @SusCalvin 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Trauma Team and its competitors fight over patients. If a Meatwagon REO crew finds that you have a TT subscription, they don't do anything. They are there specifically for TT policyholders and callers. They are not supposed to pick up eachothers patients.
    Sometimes TT and Meatwagon "claim jump" patients and fight over them. TT can see a guy with a Meatwagon card, decide that this guy is theirs since the Meatwagon car was held off by an accidental autocannon round and start billing them for their service instead.
    An alternative was to break your card and call them to your location. Then they bill you by the minute, starting from when they receive your call. They don't like it themselves, getting people on a policy ties you to their service.
    Trauma Team often has stipulations in their plans. The urban free fire zones often lack TT coverage. The wildlands outside the cities lack coverage. Certain corporate enclaves that control their airspace can close coverage.

      Their job was to get their client to the hospital, which they did. If they helped the family members, they'd:
      1) Provide service for free, which would discourage other clients from buying family package. The team would get reprimanded for violating company policy.
      2) Either need to stay longer at the crash site, while delaying getting their client to the hospital OR they'd need a second team for family members.
      None of this is a particularly good idea for the trauma team on the ground or for the company.

    • @Nightamose

      That's true, they could have rescued the remainder of the family and then put the family into crippling debt. And then sold off the debt to recoup their losses and maybe even some profit to someone who'd find a merc to harass that family for the remainder of the money. Family gets killed anyway, but everyone else makes money.

      You bought Trauma Team (or Meatwagon REO) services by the month. It was pretty costly. The alternative was paying them by the minute, starting when you placed a call to them. That was even more expensive.
      When you buy a policy it means you buy the services of a specific provider. A Trauma Team medic will shove you back on the street if you have a Meatwagon card. Or try to "claim jump" you and bill you for their service.

    • @SusCalvin
      @SusCalvin 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      One important note is that TT and its competitors (REO Meatwagon and others) usually don't run hospitals. A policy with them means they will pick you up, stabilize or recusitate you, put you in temporary cryo and truck you off to the care provider of your choice. They do not handle the continued treatment itself, that's on another policy.

      @@huoshewu It was what you got if you had an emergency service policy in the basic game. Players could buy a policy if they liked. You rolled for how many minutes it took for their AV to appear (and how many saves your PC had to roll while waiting). When their AV arrived, they rolled their Medtech skill to stabilize you.
      The policy with a hospital or insurance provider or noting which street medic they should dump you at is separate. Without such a policy, I guess they might just drive you home to your apartment or leave you to walk home. Sometimes your condition doesn't need a hospital visit, TT guys can show up to slap your back if you get food down your throat.
