I realize I am commenting before the video. I really need to share the following concerning the calf that passed away. First thank the dear Lord that the neighbor called you. I began to obsess over that sweet calf laying there on the hill and why didn’t your neighbor called sooner since the calf was born on Tuesday. His mother had died. I know the neighbor was under the weather. Anyway what finally enabled me to let go is what Jason said. We saved him from dying on that cold hill with a storm coming. The little guy had a warm bed with a heater and surrounded by folks who loved and cared for him until he passed away. Including Dr. D. The Cog Hill family is always in my prayers. Jason, my grandparents had a burn pit and I remember when my grandfather would start the pit up, my grandmother would sit her cast iron in it and let it burn all that bottom greasy stuff off. It would work.
Oh, we used to do that with our cast iron, over the campfire. I have some of my old cast iron in our camping equipment, and still use that method of cleaning.
Y'all, I laughed when Jason said he was a poet. There's a saying that I've known since my childhood and it goes,_ I'm a poet and didn't know it, can make a rhyme anytime." Hope everyone has a blessed day and night.❤😂

Wow, the pan is looking good. It's amazing how many ideas there are to season cast iron. All the animals are looking so good. Mootilda is walking around so much better. I'm going to start calling you Mcgiver lol
I watched today’s video and wanted to tell you how my mom cleaned her cast iron. I’m 77 years old and when I was a child she sent us to the yard to scrub them with sand. Then she reseasoned them.
What we do to clean cast iron is to put it in a self cleaning oven. Let it clean, then hand wash it then season it. It works like a charm every time. This came about because when we go camping, we just toss the cast iron skillets into the fire to clean then wipe it out. Try it. You can’t go wrong.
Jason, I’ve inherited several cast iron skillets, plus bought 3 at a yard sale. My Grammy Agan taught me how to clean them. She just built a fire and threw them in. It burns all the old gunk off and also, I’ve put them in the self-cleaning cycle in my oven. Works very well. They have to be reseasoned, but that’s not hard.
I currently cook only in/on cast iron. I'm 73 and a few pieces I got for our wedding in 1972. Other pieces I use were my MIL's and HER mother's cast iron pans. That means I regularly use cast iron pans that are over 125 years old! The older pans were cleaned and re-seasoned in the 80's. I take care of my pans and they have never needed re-seasoning other than that. Great pans!
You know what I learned! A easy way to burn all that stuff off of your cast iron pots and pan is to put them in your self cleaning oven when you clean your oven and it will burn off all the rust, old grease and everything! It took my pots and pans back down to bare cast iron. After that you’ll have to start over with the re seasoning but it really does work!!😊
My grandmother that died at 98 from a car accident always seasoned hers on the farm using a fire outside. She put the pans in the fire, got them hot, pulled them out, wiped them down, then she took a slab of fatback smeared all over the pans/skillets, put them back in the fire. I don’t recall any of her cast iron rusting! She did say, don’t ever wash cast iron, especially with Dawn!
Good grief, it's dangerous to leave a man by himself!! Lester's dad, Pawpaw would be cringing right now, he does his cast iron old school and it always works. Understand you thinking of upgrading the tractor to make it last but it will be forever changed. Your decision, either way is a positive! So happy you are persistent with Matilda's PE, it will make the difference as she grows!! Think she knows you're helping. With the crazy weather changes, you may get snow, just keep everyone warm!! So glad the days are working on being longer again, dark at 5 doesn't cut it!! Hope Pocket continues to adjust, tummy problems are miserable. Jason...build a fire, when it is just coals, put your pan in it and completely cover with coals. Leave it alone! When the coals get cold, next day, pull the pan out. It will be back to raw metal ready to season. Just that easy.😅😊

I have my Granny's cast iron cookware, including a Dutch Oven, a cornbread pan, two irons used to iron clothes, and others. My dad said that she would put her cast iron into a fire to clean it really well and then season it.
Yep, get a fire going outside, lay your pans in it and put more wood on. Next day (or two) when all has cooled down pull your pans out of the ashes. They will be clean. Works for old heavy cast aluminum pans as well. I had a friend who tried the self cleaning feature on his oven. It works, but you need good ventilation because all the grease and food residue burning off makes smoke.

During your LIVE this morning, I asked if you would do a video on the cast iron, not realizing that this was the video. It was in my WATCH LATER playlist and I just watched it. I can’t get to every video as they come out. Anyway this is so cool and I need to do this to some very old pieces that were given to me. Amazing!
We went 12 volt and what a difference. It was really incredible. We also changed the carburetor. I can't remember which carburetor it was but it was a newer version of the one that was on it originally. Good luck Jason!
2 methods: so I have even told, in olden days, the farmers or townsmen would build a bonfire and when the fire was going really well, the men would put their wives cast iron cookware and lay it on the fire, when the fire had burned out, the cast iron cookware would be completely clean, and ready to be re seasoned! The other method that I know actually happened to my mother in law: she had purchased a new self cleaning range/ oven combination that year… so when it came time to run the oven cleaning program, she placed her cast iron skillet in the oven on the oven racks, and turn on the cleaning lever. When the oven cleaning program had run its cycle, she removed her cast iron skillet to find out was as clean as a brand new one! 🤣 She was shocked to see it that clean, and began re seasoning it again, and continued using it! I do not use cast iron as it is too heavy.! But the food she cooked in it was delicious!
Love how you stirred the soap for the cast-iron skillets that was pretty clever. It’s not every day you use a canoe paddle to stir the soup. Have a great day.😊
Wow, that’s interesting. Wow to clean that old cast-iron pan and then to re-season it so Brooke can use it in the house and incredible. I have five cast-iron pans and three of them get used so regularly wow incredible that’s an awesome job Jason and who what a thought what you made would work❤❤
On my 1948 Chevy 1/2 T truck it made a world of difference when I upgraded to 12V. I had a step down transformer built so I could still use the 6V dash gages. AND I no longer had to park on a hill to jump start it!!!
@@patriciaharner5156 I could pop the clutch going forward or backwards on a hill. Where I moved to for work the town had all flat streets so the conversion made it so much easier than asking a neighbor to push me down the street enough to pop the clutch. . My brother flew out to help me rewire the truck and we left the 6V starter in! Boy did it turn over wicked fast! I miss my truck, had to sell it after over 40 years of having her when I downsized and moved to be near some relatives. Folks were always shocked to see a chick driving a vintage truck. 99% stock too. Had a radio and a heater, that was great.
I would absolutely love it if Peaches could give a shout out to Kendrick and Amy. They are my 2 and 4 year old grandchildren that are in love with her. We read the books all the time.
Thank you, Jason, Brooke, Catherine, Dr D, and all those who Care so much...Thank you for all you are doing. 💖 Watching what you do in today's video and all the Goodness you spread, touches my heart. You "wear a smile, and your heart on your sleeve". When you showed us the time with your neighbor's calf, it was precious to me. Watching you ALL with your LOVING words and touch and your determination to give your All to the calf's short time here, builds me up inside. Something I've learned to understand is that the frequency/energy of...whatever you might call it..."what we say" actually builds us up or not. In my mind, you are the "uplifting" we are drawn to. Which is the first site I watch each morning?...Cog Hill Farm! 🐞
Fed everything but the winged creatures and I know that their feeding time is in the morning. So glad your new mad science experiment worked! Truly happy all the farm pets are thriving as well as you all Jason and fam.
Jason, I really enjoy watching you embrace doing things like back in the day. Back when life was simpler. It’s nice that you take us along as you explore those methods. I’m anxious to see the cast iron skillet when it’s clean then seasoned. You’ve found a new passion. It’s nice to have a friend and mentor like Tony G to give you advice. You’re making those pieces beautiful again.✨They will be heirloom pieces to pass on to MaryCarl one day. I’m sure someone out there will help you decide what to do with your granddaddy’s tractor. It’s hard when you want to preserve something like that for sentimental reasons and for keeping it all vintage. But at the end of the day you want to put it to use in your gardens and your granddaddy would most likely feel the same way. You’ll figure it out. You’re absolutely right. Those sunsets are so beautiful. As always, from CA🏖️take care.
Man!!! If the electrolysis tank works like it looks like it will, there will be very little elbow grease needed!!! Game changer!! Tony is probably checken that out!! Mootilda is getting some great therapy from the goats, too!!❤
I had bought two Dutch ovens and one lid. I had some tree limbs to burn so I added. It was late in the day so I left them to cool off. It came a light shower in the night and one of the omens cracked from the cool rain. I was so sorry! I have a huge huge skillet that will hold two chickens to fry! My Son gave it to me.
If your tank doesn’t work, Gary Walker at Walker Farm fam cleaned some cast-iron and he used the drill with the wire brush. You may check that out. Good luck partner.
I’m waiting for Mootilda to get real strong and one of these days push you back! 😂You’re doing so amazing with her, I’m so happy she’s getting better! Have an amazing day Cog Hill and Squad! ❤🌞✨
Next time you do a science project you'll need a lab coat Professor Jason. The cast iron experiment is very interesting. You've got the feeding down to a science too. I'm impressed with the efficiency. Wow! The mess in the tub is awesome and what you are scraping off the pan is incredible. Great job!🤗
Jason, I think you’re on the right track with your granddaddy’s tractor. Some of the stuff on my husband’s old truck is the same way and he’s gonna change it over to the electronic ignition.
Have used cast iron for over 50 years. When my skillets or dutch oven needs to be redone (which they do at some point) just get a grinding brush that attaches to your drill, take the residue off. Your skillet (pan) will look like steel almost, but don't worry. just season it w/oil in the oven like normal. You will need to do it about 3 times, but they will be seasoned and nice and smooth. Simple to do.
In lieu of being a Mad Scientist I view Jason as a Happy, Caring, Dancing Scientist! His CAN-DO attitude is without limits. (I anticipate Caden will also be multi-talented. He certainly enjoys being productive and learning.) In the near future Jason's tools and miscellaneous nuts-&-bolts when be shiny like a new penny.
I use white vinegar in a plastic tub which removes everything from the pan down to the metal. One more thing, the best ever oil I use to season the pans is flax seed oil. One more thing, be careful because occasionally cast iron pans have been used for purposes such as melting lead.
Happy New Year to Cog Squad and Cog Hill. Just makes my heart happy every time you post. Thank you for all of the hard work on the farm and bringing us along. We sure appreciate you and all the fur and feathered family there at Cog Hill. ❤ y’all be good. I had to add what a beautiful sunset and seeing you so happy about the cast iron made me smile so big. I was waiting for the happy dance 😂
Most of the time the old folks would put the cast irons in a bond fire, heat then up to over 500 F and then scrub them down with coarse salt. Repeat until the pan whips clean, then oil until black and shine.
Late to the video, butttt.... seeing the goats be so gentle with the new baby makes my heart soooo happy. They just know she needs tenderness even in playtime ❤😊🐄🐐❤😊
Your ending shot and the beautiful sunset with moon and the sound of the barnyard anmals internally said to me " Oh, little town of Bethlehem". You are the voice and environment of the reason for the Christmas season. For me a little touch of heaven with Cog Hill Farm. Thank you Jason
Hello Jason, Brooke is going to be so proud of you. You can tell the animals love you guys. They learn so fast because they trust you. You're right animals are smart, I watch you because I watch the animals, they tell me all I need to know. I trust my dog's judgement if she doesn't like someone, then there is something wrong. Glad your thingy thing works.❤❤🤣🤣🤣
For many years I've kept (Cascade) powdered automatic dishwasher detergent on hand for washing/ cleaning projects. I soak antique linens in it to remove stubborn stains, hand wash silk plants in it, soak window blinds in the bath tub with it to ease cleaning, and soak cooked on stubborn messes on pots and pans. I would try this first.
Good Day Jason thank you for sharing and harvesting our Smiles today, you might say your alone on the farm, but I don’t think your ever really alone, you’ve got plenty of four legged and two legged friends to keep you company. I use to do electrolysis when I was a teenager, I used a old fish tank, my railroad set power supply (It had a knob on it so I could control the strength) and I’d use copper pennies and nickels or other metal objects. The copper from the pennies would coat what ever other metal objects I’d have connected in the tank. As an Adult I work at a company that manufactured Printed Circuit Boards and we used electrolysis to plate the metal onto the printed circuits.😀👍👍👍

Wow, that’s interesting. Wow to clean that old cast-iron pan and then to re-season it so Brooke can use it in the house and incredible. I have five cast-iron pans and three of them get used so regularly wow incredible that’s an awesome job Jason and who what a thought what you made would work❤❤
You go, scientist Jason 😊
On my 1948 Chevy 1/2 T truck it made a world of difference when I upgraded to 12V. I had a step down transformer built so I could still use the 6V dash gages. AND I no longer had to park on a hill to jump start it!!!
Thanks!!!!
@@CJ-bu8mh you go ! I have done that a few times.
Jason you are the most loving husband, father, and animal steward. You are a great example to all of us. 🙏🏼❤️🙏🏼❤️
I would absolutely love it if Peaches could give a shout out to Kendrick and Amy. They are my 2 and 4 year old grandchildren that are in love with her. We read the books all the time.
Using a self cleaning oven works great. Have been cooking with cast iron all my life and once you reseason them they are great
Thank you, Jason, Brooke, Catherine, Dr D, and all those who Care so much...Thank you for all you are doing. 🐞
@@carolb3946 I whole heartedly agree 👍 Thank you ☺️!
Have 2 pans I bought in the 70's, keep them seasoned and nothing sears a steak better. The Dutch Oven is a dream come true, wow, Tony is generous.
That sunset scene was absolutely breathtaking!!!! A picture of that would be beautiful in a frame!!! ❤
Wow how it worked this new method to clean the pans!!! I wish also cast iron pans. So beautiful to see Matilda playing with the goats 💚
Fed everything but the winged creatures and I know that their feeding time is in the morning. So glad your new mad science experiment worked! Truly happy all the farm pets are thriving as well as you all Jason and fam.
Peaches?
@debrah7548 Yes, she is not a winged creature, but she is also morning fed, isn't she lol.
Mootilda is getting some great therapy from the goats, too!!❤
I love the freckles or black spots on her cute nose. Love it she's so sweet.
You make the Cog Squad’s days better. Wishing you the best.❤
@@LouY778 Amen 🙏
Good job, Jason. Where there is a will, there’s a way. Henceforth, rust be gone!
Mootilda beautiful!
How cool the electrolysis tank is working..good job! Amazed how quickly you were able to put it together…love it!!!
My ex boyfriend was a tattoo artist and he got an electrolysis tank and I was completely amazed at how well it worked!! GREAT thinking Jason!! 👍👏🎉👍
WOW! Lester's dad and brother need to see this. They love cast iron too.
The colors of the sunset through the barn door just before you close it is gorgeous!😊
the goats are helping Matilda with her PT, too. those head butting sessions are helping her too. I love to see that
Have used cast iron for over 50 years.
Thank you to Jason
That is a beautiful sunset thank you Jason for showing us
love feeding videos! We get to walk with you AND all animals. TY
Beautiful sunset. Iron pan is cleaning up well.
GOD BLESS YOU.
Thoroughly enjoyed this video. And learned something too.
@@angelraburn4401 so was I !
Matilda is so cute! When you walk up to her,her tail wags like a puppy. So sweet! And I swear honey looks like her coat is darker or is it just me?!
Most of the time the old folks would put the cast irons in a bond fire, heat then up to over 500 F and then scrub them down with coarse salt. Repeat until the pan whips clean, then oil until black and shine.
so funny when Holly drops her ball or toy and keeps looking down in the floor of the side by side
Enjoyed the day with Jason and Holly and hope Brooke and MC had a nice day. Glad the electrolisis tank is working well. God bless CHF...:)
Matilda has grown a good bit since you acquired her!
I love getting to go talk to all the animals and update them lol. And what an exciting experiment!!
@@ginacurtis1702 so do I!
Awe Bootsy and new calf are BFF ! Can you let Pooky play with the big ball, I bet she would love it!
So glad you take such good care of your animals
For many years I've kept (Cascade) powdered automatic dishwasher detergent on hand for washing/ cleaning projects. I soak antique linens in it to remove stubborn stains, hand wash silk plants in it, soak window blinds in the bath tub with it to ease cleaning, and soak cooked on stubborn messes on pots and pans. I would try this first.
Have you communicated with Tyler from the channel Farmer Tyler Ranch? He has a couple old tractors that I believe are the same models.
Rose red homestead has a great video on cast iron. I think she used Oven Off get clean up her older cast iron pans
Love every part of this video Jason!
Love when y'all show project videos!
Can’t wait to see the end result on the cast iron skillet. Another beautiful sunset at the farm.
How cool is that?!! Thanks for the fascinating share.
That is so cool, Jason!
