I'm black too. This song is about the Mona Lisa, a "simple prop" whom Da Vinci cherished and toted with him wherever he went. The Mona Lisa is actually the image of the beast from the sea discussed in the Bible's Revelations. Da Vinci himself was one head of the beast in fact. He's a vampire who can age backwards, and he's also been known as Otto von Bismarck and Adolf Hitler. These 2 statesmen were stylistically different but their underlying bone structure was identical. And the German King at the time voluntarily conferred all of his power and authority to Prince Otto for some strange reason. This unprecedented event parallels the Biblical description of the beast's ascent to power. Here's the catch: America was originally ordained by God as a free land for whites. For the Gentiles specifically, which is virtually inclusive of all whites. Therefore I have a neutral attitude towards the fact that my great-great-great grandpa Otto is the Devil. This song fills my heart with sentimental nostalgia although I know exactly what it's about.

Back in the early 80’s my sister’s boyfriend saw R.E.M. play when he was in college. They split up, and she never forgot him. She died from Covid and I got word from him. Although my sister and he had both lived different lives, he said she had been the love of his life. Perhaps the band wrote this song about people being used, perhaps drugs. To me it will always be a man crying it out to a lost love, the “prop” being the actual words, or poetry, of the song. ❤️
Altogether this song is reminiscent of old European nobility whose nearest neighbors were miles away. Transportation took forever in the horse-and-carriage days, so these people would usually only gather for special occasions like balls, weddings and affairs of state. Their social skills were very formal by our standards because meeting people wasn't an everyday thing. And they learned to love their valuables, their "simple props" more than other people. These sentiments are enjoying a resurgence in our 1% era and Stipe was ahead of the game with this song.

REM have to be one of the finest band's in the world or maybe I'm biased as i was a 90's teen when most of REM'S music came out so happy memories. I got sober in 2004 and a short time later i went to an REM concert at my beloved Ipswich Town football stadium, it was very special as it was first live band i saw as a sober/clean man. 2020 still sober n clean

I used to hear this song in the gym working out and didn't really listen to the lyrics, which are truly creepy. If you can imagine, people were using this song at weddings. A song that talks of a person as being a prop to occupy his time. That said, it's a terrific piece of music.
Because of the wording, you can interpret the simple prop line to mean something other than the person. I would have probably thought it referred to the song being a simple prop to occupy the singers time (maybe when they are apart) It doesn't really make sense to me that a person you love is "a simple prop to occupy my time" it's like saying "this is for the person I love, but I don't really love you I'm just using you." One part cancels out the other...
@@donnamack6797 I was 14 when I heard it I never really understood the lyrics, my cousins and I used to watch it when it was on MTV when MTV actually had music videos on it, we always imitated the part where he says fire and the guy has his mouth completely wide open trying to say fire and we always laughed at that, yes like you said a little creepy side but a great song.

@@taoist32 it still is. 😎 50 IS old an I’m 50! I don’t feel old, but I am. Let’s be honest, it’s been a hell of a ride though. Listened to this one on my Sony Walkman with my high top Nikes an acid washed jeans in high school an thought I was so unique! Gen X. I wore this tape out back then, they called it ‘College Music’ or ‘Alternative’. It was so new, so unlike all other music REM actually created a new category. Bought it on CD prolly late 80’s early 90’s an now more recently I’ve bought a third time on the cloud. I say getting old beats the alternative! Enjoy your youth for one day we will look back on this comment an say, “50? gosh we were so young then” One Love❤️
I’ve listened to quite a bit of REM in the past driving on a country road as a kid in Australia. Seems to suit country drives for some reason. I get what you’re getting at.
Yeah for sure, my parents were from the countryside but moved to London before I was born, but whenever I go there for the summer, these songs just strike me as I feel the air burn yet refresh me
yeah, that is a *wild* thing to learn. I found out on AB's TV Tropes page. and you know what never happens on that site? someone just sitting there stunned for a good minute or two instead of clicking on every visible link, and yet that is what I did.
This reminds me of junior high. I used to see the video on MTV after school. I was so mesmerized by music back then. I'm not sure what happened to talented artists. Sigh, what a weird and confusing world we live in today.
+Sheels1976 I wish I grew up in that era. I was born in 96 :( nowadays when you turn on MTV, instead of seeing good music videos, you see stupid shit like Teen Mom and Jersey Shore and shit
+samsquanch1996 haha true but we had no cell phones or Internet. It was very different back then. I almost got kidnapped walking home and I had no way of calling anyone. We had to actually use Walkmans with tapes. I still think it was a better time but I'm sure every older person says that lol.

@@clintjones9848 Weird? No. The song is dark. It's not a love song regardless of what people seem to think. It's sung from the perspective of a sociopathic abuser, basically.

One thing that I love about this song is that like Phil Collin's "In the Air Tonight". People mistake it as a love song. When really it's the complete opposite.
he said that though he also said he'd be alright with people interpreting it that way. i think its still about love, even if its about "lacking what love is about". like how B182 "miss you" is a break up song... but many miss that.
I have been searching for this song for 10 years. Unable to remember a lyric or even the name of the band. Until one day I heard one of their songs on the radio and knew that voice. Very nostalgic to have found this.

At the end though when he sings or yells, "Fire" I think he's killing mass amounts of people with a missile or even a nuke. That would be so dark and disturbing -- th-cam.com/video/lugwYTwW8us/w-d-xo.html
A lot of REM songs seem happy on the surface but are actually pretty dark. Shiny Happy People was inspired by a propaganda billboard Stipe say in a news report about the Tiananmen Square massacre in China.
@@callahans44 this one goes out to the one I love (followed by fire and a woman chanting) - Fire, as you should know (though noone can seem to put 2+2 together) equals Satan. Don `t cry😂
Amen
Yeah you just wanted to bang them lol😅 I get it
im with you. i was always so stoned in high school and would get so nervous like heart beating out of my chest. weed is not very conducive to conversing with chicks. Like, .. lets go to a party.... but take bong rips before we go. Great idea. Once i got comfortable with myself 19-20 i kinda went rogue... im guessing i was trying to make up for all the missed opportunities. So many beautiful women in the world and i was crazy for them all... still am
pov: your listening to this in 2009 because you have a cool dad.
That is oddly specific
Found the youngun. This song was old af when my cool dad played it for me in 99 lol
2011 and both of my parents.

I'm so proud of you!! 💚

Congratulations Man!!😊👌🏼
I can only IMAGINE the performance they must've put on!🤯🤯
I know I’m 2 years late but Congratulations, and I hope you’re doing good today
Congrats! Great message to help other ppl to get out every kind of addictions and staying clean.! How I wish that what happened to you also happened to a great friend of mine... I would love to hear from him a statement like yours... But unfortunately he only sinks deeper and deeper... He doesn't realize it's much better to stay clean and out off drugs... To say no to drugs. He's killing himself little by little. And he is taking down his mother's health too...
REM at the peak of their powers!
This is unfortunately how love is given by too many people. It's not love at all just a tool or distraction and everyone of them is interchangeable.
REM - "Can you do fire, when I say fire"?
CGI guy - "I can do sparks."
REM - "Yeah but I really wanted fire....at the fire spot"
CGI guy - "I can do sparks."
But there isn’t even any CGI in the video.
@@toad6565 Agree, but he's just the cgi guy. Thanks for your pedantic comment though.

It's now March 2020, and I have been hearing some of this tune going around in my head for some reason.. so I came here to listen to the full song 😀🎶

I hope anyway…because it has happened to me…because your savage turn and rending really came out of left field and I didn’t give you a proper reason that I should be your enemy…in truth…for the most part…at least not such that I deserve this fate I am currently living…but happy to have evaded the curse of a third eye and all the horrible things witnessed thereby… hope everyone will be saved in the end and 144,000 is a code for everyone, but you’ve taken your abuse a bit too far tbf also…🙏

I love how people think this is a romantic song when it’s anything but there’s literally lyrics that say a simple prop to occupy my time
I used to hear this song in the gym working out and didn't really listen to the lyrics, which are truly creepy. If you can imagine, people were using this song at weddings. A song that talks of a person as being a prop to occupy his time.
That said, it's a terrific piece of music.
Actually you don't understand like many people...
Because of the wording, you can interpret the simple prop line to mean something other than the person. I would have probably thought it referred to the song being a simple prop to occupy the singers time (maybe when they are apart)
It doesn't really make sense to me that a person you love is "a simple prop to occupy my time" it's like saying "this is for the person I love, but I don't really love you I'm just using you." One part cancels out the other...
@@bryansanchez8448 Even knowing what's up, I still like it. My gym played a lot of great songs like this, and I often couldn't understand the lyrics. The facility played so many great songs.
This song need to listen with closing eyes from start to finish. ‘Cause this song is perfect..
This is the greatest 4 line song of all times.
First heard this when I was still at school, I'll be fifty next year, that's how long it's been a big deal.
I'm 50 next year too and here I am.....still listening like it's the first time I've heard it ❤
Never gets old
Same. And back then 50 was old.
That was damn funny
I'm 14- my teacher played this in the class and now I'm obsessed 😍
SEEN THIS BAND IN AUCKLAND BACK IN THE EARLY NINETIES & THEY WERE BRILLIANT.
I love how everyone interprets this as a love song when it’s about the emotional abuse people suffer from being used constantly.
What beautiful irony
Yup
This Song is About alcohol and drug abuse. And was originally going to be called Fire.
Yup. People also think that "Every Breath You Take" is a love song when it is really about unhealthy obsession.
Seals kiss from a rose is about crack addiction.
One of the most misunderstood ‘love’ songs, ever.
This reminds me when I lost my younger brother by Cancer in 2015 and my mother 48 days after him

Still a haunting sound after all these years... I love this song ❤️
I heard this song on a country road in New Hampshire, and still feel the love of my past.......
Orange Crush is a brilliant song too.
I’ve listened to quite a bit of REM in the past driving on a country road as a kid in Australia. Seems to suit country drives for some reason. I get what you’re getting at.
Yeah for sure, my parents were from the countryside but moved to London before I was born, but whenever I go there for the summer, these songs just strike me as I feel the air burn yet refresh me
Fun fact: Alton Brown was the Director of Photography for this video.
yeah, that is a *wild* thing to learn. I found out on AB's TV Tropes page. and you know what never happens on that site? someone just sitting there stunned for a good minute or two instead of clicking on every visible link, and yet that is what I did.
One of the Greatest Love Songs. There is always that one. But.😁
This reminds me of junior high. I used to see the video on MTV after school. I was so mesmerized by music back then. I'm not sure what happened to talented artists. Sigh, what a weird and confusing world we live in today.
+Sheels1976 it's more like what happened to the MTV? talented artists are out there but why they're not on tv?
+Sheels1976 Amen to that.
+Sheels1976 Same here....
Probably my favourite REM track. It's such a well crafted and written song.

Pretty weird lyrics. This one goes out to the one I love.. Ok, love is a noble idea. Simple prop to occupy my time/fire.. Ok, that got gay really fast. A pp is the one he loves? Lol not as deep as it sounded at the beginning.

Right. Like people who think Springsteen's "Born in the USA" is a star-spangled flag waving "hooray for USA" song
he said that though he also said he'd be alright with people interpreting it that way. i think its still about love, even if its about "lacking what love is about".
like how B182 "miss you" is a break up song... but many miss that.

Moments mean everything sometimes.
Actally this is a very disturbing deep song. Its about only use the "one he loves" as a passtime or side activity. Great song by REM actually
I think the prop is the one he has now, to occupy his time. Cuz she's not the one he loves whom this goes out too.
The one he loves = _his lover_
@@callahans44 this one goes out to the one I love (followed by fire and a woman chanting) - Fire, as you should know (though noone can seem to put 2+2 together) equals Satan. The one he left behind is God. If you listen to EVERY song with a God vs. Satan perspective- you unmagically will suddenly understand the meaning to all lyrics in music.

Apparently people play this a weddings, that is too hilarious! Being delivered along with divorce papers would be a more appropriate use.
Well, 80% of all marriages do tend to fail. so, You're 80% not wrong.
True, it’s not a song about a healthy relationship, that’s for sure.
"A simple prop to occupy my time". Yeah, anyone who uses this as their wedding song only read the title.
People think Queen's Love of my Life which is about the end of a Love and then coming back to Friendship type Love and get all romantic. What part of " You've broken my heart and now you leave me." screams Wedding song???
🤣👏
REM are a bit like Bacon
You either like them or you're wrong
Thought you were going to say "You take one bite and you want to the whole thing" but I like your quote better! :-)
Well, Michael Stipe is a vegetarian, so let's replace bacon with 'tempeh bacon'. If you don't like that stuff, F.U.
Stгคzzเyค B๏ςђภ๏ש IV only fucked up people love bacon
but eventually you try bacon, relish in it and say "shit, you mean it was this awesome the whole time"
Enola Raven Stipe might not like the concept of bacon, but I don't think he could argue about the taste. And fuck me, right, because any ersatz meat is just plain wrong.
The guitar work on this is something else. As for the lyrics I have always called this song a ballad. So fitting
Real song that I heard so many times in the past, but brings tears to my eyes now 😢
This song for me is about music itself.
'A simple prop to occupy my time'.
Music for me has been a best friend.
It has entertained me. Kept me company,

@S C Shower of cunts rem, i bought reveal in 2001, mixed in dublin if i remember the album notes, 1st yr in secondary skool
You seem confused. You're saying music has brought you tremendous fulfillment, so it isn't "a simple prop to occupy your time" at all. You don't seem to understand what a "simple prop" is. He's saying the person he loves is really just a token novelty he uses to avoid boredom.
Michael Stipe with hair - nice! :-)
it was long, long time ago....
To be honest, i was not a big REM fan, but this track is just one of my fave 80s tracks...anybody got another suggestion i should check...
"Fall on Me" is a slender yet gorgeous song with beautiful vocal melodies, I would try that one out. And of course "Losing My Religion".
soooooooooo much better than that other version
every rem song makes me sad... even shiny happy people.... maybe moreso nostalgic.
