At my bike shop, we had a model we would use to show customers how it worked. We learned that (like a zip tie) you can shimmy a strip of metal between the band and the lock and just... Open it. No tin snips needed, I did it with a soda can, a piece of scrap, and even a box knife.

The security of locks like that (and like the TSA luggage locks or trying to lock a tent) are mostly just in the device as a deterrent. Many people are not very clever and/or wouldn’t want to be caught manipulating a lock or eg cutting a tent open. That’s being generous though, these companies should be ashamed of putting out products that are so unfit for their purpose. A super light lock that provided a lot of actual security would sell quite well, but with the current engineering trade offs of size, price, and available materials, it doesn’t seem like there’s a great way to do that, and given the motivation and access to probably-stolen angle grinders with cutoff discs, the only real way to win the bike theft game is to not lock an expensive bike on the street in any kind of urban area.

Even a simple string of hardened steel would do ways better since you cant just go their with a pair of Metal snippers or apparently even a long flat piece of metal of any sorts and be gone in 2 seconds. That no deterrant - thats an invitation.

Never saw another video from bill.
However ottolock themselves told me on fb that they had sent bill another sample and heard nothing back.
A couple things could have happened. One bill did do a followup and I missed it.
Two, Bill got the sample and it was a case of more shit from the same pile and he figured that if thats the best they had then why bother he'd already shown them to be shit locks why waste more time.
Or ottolock lied outright or their social media person was misinformed when they spoke to me.
I offered to test a sample and privately share the results with them. The never responded to that offer. Some random person started calling me names and crap tho. Odd.
Lastly, and this is really unlikely, Bill got the sample and it totally whooped his ass.
Like it ate his lock picks and spit out springs.
And he was ashamed. Emasculated. Mortified.

In photography there is a mindset that the camera you have is better than the one at home. If your camera or lock is too heavy or so unwieldy that you don't bring it, or even worse, bring it and don't use it then a tool like this really is the best option for you.
If someone plans to steal a bike then this won't stop them, but if it's just a terrible person who is walking or driving down the road and decides to steal the bike because it's convenient, this will likely stop them.
