Straight up, Luffy's ultimate power has been hinted at from the very beginning. Luffy has ALWAYS had aspirations to fight like a Looney Tunes character. So many fights have him trying wacky shit that doesn't work or does work but shouldn't work. He gets super pumped over silly things like having an afro when he dueled Foxy or when he was made to look like a mecha by Mr. 3 for his fight with Magellan. His fight with Eneru...Gum-Gum Space Out, throwing hands at a wall to bounce his fists back randomly. Inflating his arm to have a gigantic fist. Luffy has always wanted to fight like a cartoon character. Gear 5 gives him the power to fight however he pleases, peak freedom, thus cartoon logic. All while laughing like it's he's high as a kite and just heard the funniest joke ever.
If I understood right, he literally is high. He straight up can't stop laughing in Gear Fifth.
Loved the Gear 5 moment. Unlike other ultimate shonen transformations, which is seen as badass or majestic (Ultra instinct, Final Getsuga, SPSM), it's shown to be lighthearted and comedic. It is so fitting given Luffy's character, which is all about freedom, hence why the them is called Drums of Liberation.
And even better, it's not really Loony Tunes animation like Nux said, though that's in there. It's RUBBER HOSE animation, the oldest animation style that all comedic animation descends from. That's old black and white newsreel out of it's mind Fleischer stuff right there, channeled through nearly a hundred years of advancement and style evolutions

there is a reason for it, the way I like to put it is luffys high on freedom and said freedom makes him 100% care free. its like how a normal human might feel after achieving a goal BUT X 100
I've been saying that the Cartoon God Theory is the correct one and I remember everyone hating on that idea on me. It's literally cartoons style in the Manga. When it first came out, I was certain that it's a cartoon ability and that Sun God Nika was actually a Cartoon Character, that JoyBoy treasured, in Laugh Tale. I've been into ABD, Zhoniin, and B.D.A Law. Everyone there hated the Cartoon theory.

it's different from all the other shonen powerups. that's what makes it as good as it is. it's about happiness. nothing about being edgy and angry/vengeful. It's just freedom and happiness. Also, his laugh is so diabolical it's crazy!

The animation of the Gear 5 itself was phenomenal. My only problem was that they put Hiyori's moment in the middle and it killed the tension. But overall, I loved it.
One lowkey moment I loved was Kaido's apology. Rather than being non-plussed and enraged by Luffy's power up, he respects the power, the reilience.
Moreover, he's happy that his worthy opponent has still got Aces up his sleeve. Joyboy gave joy even to the ass he's whooping lol
Toon Force has a few rules, one of which is that it only works when it's funny. Luffy laughing at everything means that it always works. Brilliant!
Only weakness of Gear Fifth I noticed in this fight was that sometimes Luffy's way too busy laughing to see an attack coming.
He took quite a few unnecessary hits to the face because of that.
The reaction by kaido when the blast is returned to him is still killing me. It shouldn’t have been that funny. The voice actor and the face is perfect

More unfortunately I don't think the animators got the memo, the sound design is fine at all, but it's way too finely animated to feel as fun as it should. I wish it was more cartoony and (ironically) rubbery and instead it feels too fluid.

Luffy's laugh, the over the top sound effects, the animation, the eye gags, and Luffy literally breaking the rules of reality in this fight... Gear 5 was absolutely perfect. Only wish they didn't use half the screen time on orochi, with the way they hyped this up the entire episode needed to be Luffy just fucking around in Gear 5.
Gear 5 is just perfect and it makes so much sense its the ultimate freedom you can have, so beautiful story telling
What gets me the most about it is the insane ANIMATION of the episode! Toei didn’t hold back one bit with Gear 5!! It’s almost mesmerizing….

Its so perfect its literally childhood cartoons wrapped into the most important part of a serious arc
The episode was an 8/10 at worst and a 9/10 at best. Overall, I LOVE the episode (when I skip the Hiyori/Orochi scene). Luffy bouncing around was so much fun, the new soundtracks are BANGERS, and when they showed all the clips of Luffy's fights when the letters made the bell noises, it was so hype! Gear 5th really feels like a massive reward for your patience!
The action was a little to fast imo. If they lingered on a few frames it would have been easier to take in.

I was smiling ear to ear with my joy at its absolute peak watching Looney Luffy do his thing to everything around, plus the music and sound effects were perfect with the crazy ass animation going on as well
The single reaction frame of Kaido getting the beam sent back to him is so funny
The more I watch this scene the more props I gotta give to the animators for blending in normal Anime art style with the Cartoonishly bombastic art style. Major props!

It was an amazing reveal! The only issues I had was what everyone else has been saying with the Hiyori scene. It could have been squeezed in the last episode with the amount of times the anime keeps recalling the same events that JUST HAPPENED. And also my only complaint is that luffy was bouncing up there for way longer than necessary before the real action started. Went from Nami saying luffy wouldn’t die, luffy awakens gear 5 and bounces around, goes to hiyori she does her thing, goes back to luffy bouncing around with the same scenes, goes to sanji, cuts back to luffy bouncing around some more nothing happening, back to kaido then bam it starts for 5 minutes then it’s to be continued. I blame toei for that one. It was awesome but the dragging really messed with it at the beginning

they're just following whats in the manga, plus its more like an introduction to the transformation than rather getting straight into the fight. next episode is gonna be heat for sure.

which is definitely not the case, all gear 5 scenes were some of the best animation in one piece and in anime in general, no one is denying that.
Some people didnt like the looney toon stuff of the episode, don´t understand that, I loved it. This is the perfect power up for luffy
I have not watched a single episode of One Piece, and this sequence makes me so happy.
The Warrior of Liberation brings happiness and joy to all those around him. Luffy has always done this for characters around him in the story, but I think it's so meta and amazing that Gear 5 transcends the pages and has brought all of us so much happiness, laughter and joy. Truly, Gear 5 has become my favorite power/transformation in anime history and is so so perfect for Luffy.
Luffy has been the constant liberator of nations and people under oppression. Gear 5 has helped me realize that in a similar way he has helped liberate us, the reader, as well. Whether it be through depression, heart break or just the every day challenges of life, Luffy and this story help temporarily liberate us from those moments of distress. Gear 5 is the culmination of it all and is just full on unrestrictive joy that is hard to find these days in modern media and just life in general.
Gear 5 is perfect.
Absolutely loved the looney toons x anime style animation, I loved every scene of gear 5. Been wondering for almost 1,5 years how they might animate that and which soundstracks they might use. I was absolutely stunned they nailed it.
Can't wait for the final saga to get animated when this level of production can be sustained.
We both know why they couldn't go full tilt with 1071. This whole fight is going to have to have some amazing quality, and it will take a few episodes at least.

I born was in 1993 I been watching one piece from 2000 till now I am happy I am alive to see what someone friends didn't get to see the peak of luffy thank u oda for a wonderful series and an amazing episode
They refer to the power of the awakened Nika fruit as being the most ridiculous power anyone has ever seen, and they are not wrong. The awakened Nika fruit power is literally 1930s rubber hose cartoon physics meaning Luffy can literally do just about anything.
I completely loved the episode, but I just need to give my girl Hiyori some love! Her moments are just so fun or emotional and oddly underrated within the community

go watch Old tom and Jerry. the technical skills for animation present there, are not here. anime is the lowest level of animation aside being pretty amd some studios like trigger that push animation boundaries, this looks....pretty bad. i HOPE they get their best lead animator on the next episode, which they probably will.

Cutting out all the flashbacks and just watching the fight is really the way to watch this episode. I was honestly really disappointed with the fight when I first watched the episode, but after rewatching without all the other stuff that was there to pad out the episode, I realised the reason I was underwhelmed was because all the other stuff kept ruining the flow of the fight. Without all that extra junk, this is such an amazing introduction of gear 5.
What I love most is that Luffy saying this is his peak has nothing to do with power. If he, as a person, could choose any power in the world he would choose this even if meant he couldn’t beat a butterfly. It’s not the peak of his strength, it’s the peak of HIM.
Honestly this is still animated like an anime, and I kinda wanted it to be closer to a 40s cartoon than it was. It also felt way to slow paced which killed it for me. But I think the animation is great and that the actual mechanics for the toon force was great.
Its anime, So its drawn in anime style still... but the animation Style itself is Replicating Cartoons...

I just realized Bentham could go Gear 5. Stated in the weakness's of the Mane Mane No Mi " . Devil Fruit powers also cannot be copied, unless it is the some form of a Zoan fruit. For instance, Bentham was able to mimic Chopper's Brain Point form, which had been granted to him through the Hito Hito no Mi. " So he can be in that state but I aren't able to use his abilities

Gear 5 was truly amazing! Well adapted and I’m so hyped to see what 1072 has to offer! The Music and animation were AMAZING 🔥 the sound effects and voice acting did not disappoint either! Looking forward to the rest of gear 5 🙌
I would say 10/10 episode but it really depends how you would view “10/10” to be defined in your pov. It was definitely not perfection, with the pacing and animation in the hiyori scenes (loved the revenge finally take place tho) but it’s up there with some of the best episodes imo. For me 10/10 doesn’t need to be 100% perfect (like 1015) but can have a moment like g5 bring it up. 10/10 for me would mean the episode was an amazing watch (like our boy nux here) and it’ll be one of my most memorable experiences watching media, which is definitely what this episode is
I died laughing while having tons of excitement the first time i watched, this time, and the other 5x or so iv watched it in the last 3 days. They seriously did an amazing job! and the fact that from the preview looks to be the same quality as this, has me even more excited!
Man this episode just made my day, so amazing that he can bring joy to people even to people outside the screen.

After rewatching this episode a few times one of my favorite moments is genuine the last moment before the “to be continued”.
Just that brief moment of Kaido exhaling smoke in excitement and Luffy twirling his fist then them staring down each other is perfect. It is both characters forgetting about everything except the fight and savoring every moment. Kaido forgets about the regret of downing him earlier or even his subordinates below as he gets his true dream, A challenger worth his time and energy. And for Luffy getting the chance to let loose with all his new found strength and energy and that unsettling moment of their eyes both going cross embodies how they are just so excited they are about to each go insane with anticipation. It is such a small thing that just screams personality to each of them and makes me enjoy this episode more, can’t wait to see the rest animated.

the part that i love THE MOST...about every episode from here till the last we got...is everyone i talked to, and everyone ive seen, all said they were smiling, or laughing the whole time with luffy....which is joyboys exact purpose and personality, to free, and bring joy to all who are around him. its abolutely nuts to me. Its like the anime became real real for those 20 minutes you watch.

I loved this and the next episode. So freaking funny..but I do gotta say that I got scared when they reused a few shots. I think perhaps the reason many people were a bit disappointed is that they didn't Release both episodes at the same time, that wouldve been the most epic thing to happen.

I’m watching reactions to it now a few months after catching up on the anime and manga, and now with Egghead coming out in the anime… this is only one of the great moments, things are only getting better
One thing I love about this episode is that they never show his eyes until he says "gear fifth". Idk why but its so cool
I commend your dedication. I respect One Piece for sure but I lost touch with it in the beginning and when I came back the episodes were so far up there, I just didn't get into it again after that. The is fight scene was still fun to see.

I remember when Gear 5 came out in the manga, I ran into one particular post that I liked. It pretty much rigged on some people thinking Gear 5 would be edgy or more muscular or something. Never had I smiled in amusement so hard at a random post before in my life

I have a issue with the fact that if luffy had the Nika Nika fruit since the start at the gorosei knew about it then why didn't they kill in Marineford or anywhere else?

- I also like that the Eyecatcher of Gear 5th Luffy is a reference to Hanafuda (each suit relates to a Month & Plants) which the Full Moon card is one for August which is perfect timing while the plant is the Susuki grass which Kaido is

my favorite part out of that episode was when luffy redirected kidos blast breath back at him and made that "oh sh*t-" face. not the whole sequence, just the part when Kido made that face. XD
