The Douaumont Necropolis and Ossuary contain the remains of both French and German soldiers who died on the Verdun battlefield. Through small outside windows of the ossuary, the skeletal remains of at least 130,000 unidentified combatants of all nations can be seen filling up alcoves at the lower edge of the building. On the inside of the ossuary building, the ceiling and walls are partly covered by plaques bearing names of French soldiers who died during the Battle of Verdun.

May perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace.

Very moving video. Thank you for being so respectful of the 1000s of people in the building. There's no winners in war in the end

The French have done an amazing job in creating such monuments. Please don't hate me: my ONE criticism, I wish they would clean the black mold away so the monument can shine as intended. The Imperial War Graves Commission here in the UK do a wonderful job maintaining the war graves.

The French are incredible at creating monuments. I doubt I will ever visit that site so I thank you for giving me a glimpse of such an important place.

Douaumont is a place I really want to to visit some day, though I know it can’t be an easy place to visit

I remember when visiting Verdun hearing the story of an old poilu who had lost an arm during the battle. He visited the ossuary every year; said he figured his arm was in there somewhere.

Such was the collective trauma of WWI that in september 1939 during the declaration of war to nazi Germany, the word "war" was not uttered even once at parliament.

I went over 20 years ago (1999 when there was an eclipse in Europe), its one of the saddest locations i have visited. I am not in anyway spiritual but you can but help feel the lack of energy, the weight of death you see is oppressive- so many mostly ordinary people who died because the politicians failed 100+ years ago.
Next time you have a vote to cast in your hand think.....i want the person who is the "least likely" to put you or a relative in somewhere similar to this - dont give those "ideological" idiots of your future a chance to ruin more lives it is the responsibility of the citizen.
