this is the reason you use a head light. to keep one hand free and the other to use a spear. so if you have a head light you have a free hand for something other than holding a flashlight.
Have done a lot of spear fishing with my pole spear on the Oregon coast. I've come up with an idea for my own survival walking staff and wanted to include a fish spear that would fit inside the pvc I'm using. I've been trying to find the right size pole spear but hadn't yet located one. Now I know how to make just what I need. Thanks a bunch. You have a new subscriber too! I'll be watching for more good ideas.
Amazing work. Thank you for sharing it. You have saved myself and other can do types of people money and time. Time that might have been wasted on reading reviews of cheap crap. Crap that we inevitably would have eventually settled for because it was in our budgets. Now i can use the material that i really want it made of and meet more in the middle costwise but get the benefits of the higher dollar end stuff. Thanks again you are great!
Very nice use of locally available materials! A couple observations based on 45 years of spearfishing experience: The points are splayed a tad too much especially for fish as tiny as blennies. A narrower splay also allows for the splay to increase as it penetrates the target thus grabbing onto and locking the target onto the shaft points. Also we eliminate the paracord and metal eye, and increase the life of the tubing by attaching it directly to the spear shaft by wrapping the tubing onto the shaft using long strips of 1 inch wide neoprene rubber cut from bicycle tire tube. Strip of gold TheraBand rubber or latex rubber would work just as well if available.
First time watcher. Very, very cool job. I thought that your work was very creative and probably very effective. Will keep on watching. I have subscribed. I enjoy creating little things that make life more simple.
What a phenomenal video! Your problem-solving and engineering is inspiring to me. It reminds me to keep life interesting. Just brilliant. Just a little note: a Hawaiian sling does not involve the use of an apparatus to fire the spear. It is called this after the slings that ancient shepherds would use; where you swing the sling above your head and release one side to liberate the projectile. Otherwise, just a flawless video.
For cutting the spears, mount them in your drill lathe and then cut it, you can probably just rest the saw on where you want the cut. Great vid thank you :)
very very very nice video. and I mean it ! you explained everything very well, and can really tell you did alot of research before explaining the video. I don't have much need for this, but that's just me. but it is still a very good well thought out and very well planned video.
These fishing spears are very very cool mate, if you want to upgrade the power, search theratube on the internet! Grab the plum colour for maximum power. I use it on my hunting catapults and is sufficient to take phesants at long ranges! Also rather than a cable tie use some tubber bands and wrap really tight then tuck under its self this will stop the cable ties cutting through the bands over time Cheers
Great work! Professional looking. I like the fiberglass pole, but I notice it flexes when loaded. This effects accuracy as it leaves your hand or the gun.
+Chris Stafford Yes, it does flex when used as a pole spear. It doesn't flex and is much more accurate when used with the Hawaiian sling, from my experience.
+Makify1 if you review your video you'll notice that it flexes in both instances. Downward when used as a pole spring and upward as a Hawaiian. I suppose the flex is reduced in the Hawaiian if you practice pulling the t straight back from the gun. I'm thinking ink I'm gonna look at aluminum tubing. Good work!
+Chris Stafford If you twist the shaft of the spear while pulling the rubber tubing so that it wraps around the shaft the shaft will not flex. Also this twisting of the rubber around the shaft gives the shaft rotation in forward movement when released aiding in accuracy. Here in Hawai'i my favorite spear for decades has been a thin graphite shaft spear 7' long. It has the tendency to flex terribly if you don't twist the rubber around the shaft while stretching it. This thin graphite shaft is very quick compared to thicker fiberglass shaft spears so much preferred by experienced divers.
This is really cool! And it looks more powerful than I would have thought. I guess the key is speed, not really power with this. You have to be faster than a fish. Good job!
Bruce A. Ulrich Exactly, speed is the key here. Another thing to consider is that water is somewhere in the neighborhood of 1,000 times more dense than air so the spears are going to slow down a lot faster in water than air.
Makify1 from my scuba courses I remember the number was more like 800, still a lot more dense than air. One little note: I don't know the legal issues in the US, but I hope your friend doesn't use these spears while diving with a respirator, is not fair to the fishes
Andrea Tani 800 is closer to the truth. The whole truth is that pure water is 784 times more dense than air at sea level but most water isn't pure and most places aren't at sea level. Your SCUBA class was pretty close to the truth and you have a good memory.
I love this video I made the Hawaii one and it worked great I really love how u taught how to make them and thought the bloopers at the end were hilarious
Just as a suggestion, find someone who is good at tig welding, and have them weld the spikes in place instead of using epoxy. Epoxy is strong, but it can be brittle.
Very good video, but I guess that you need to scale down the prototype...i mean your rig is masive for a 6cm critter... And it will be awesome to see a micro spear gun!!!
It's the other way around. I fish with a Hawaiian sling, which is the one that wraps around your thumb, the pole spear is the spear with the pvc piping.
You could save some time and get a bow fishing arrow from Academy Sports for about $4 and use a replacement slingshot tubing for $3. At least that’s what I did. Great engineering throughout though. Very impressed.
great job dude very well made diy fishing spear the best so far on youtube for a city guy for about 10$ but theres gotta be a better way to hold the rubber tubing to white handle sling then 1 BLACK ZIP TIE for the hawaiian sling over time in sea water it my get loose the rubber hosing my slip off and backfire underwater and hit your scuba mask i have no better idea at this time if any other person does please post thanks
Hawaiian sling spear seems the better choice, more power, more accurate while pole spear looks dangerous... imagine u accidentally let go at 8:46 towards ur face.
Nice build. Your video is through and informative without extra uninformative rambling off topic. Thanks for including the bloopers at the end.
The first spear is perfect for spearing prawns in the river at night, keeping one hand free to hold a flashlight. I like your creativity. Good job!! 👍
this is the reason you use a head light. to keep one hand free and the other to use a spear. so if you have a head light you have a free hand for something other than holding a flashlight.

This video was surprisingly informative and i’m on my way to the hardware store now. Thank you, kind sir.
ones of the besy diy videos for fishing spear.. good job
Simple and intresting. Keep going brother. Am from India. Kerala

That's awesome man. I like how you included the bloopers. Great job man.

+Ahnko Chee Outdoors Thanks for the tips!
@@Makify1 You never spear-fished under water have you?
Lol the bloopers made my day this video is useful to me in 2021
Good job on the spears! The jig you made for the drilling was amazing. It took a lot of skill and craftsmanship to design and make it
First time watcher. Very, very cool job. I thought that your work was very creative and probably very effective. Will keep on watching. I have subscribed. I enjoy creating little things that make life more simple.
Thank you! I'm glad you liked the video.
Excellent design & so well presented!!!!!!!
Wrap the fiberglass with tape and then cut it. This way it won’t splinter. Great video!

Ah jeez sorry my note has been covered extensively in the comments.
you're talented, intelligent, and very helpful! Thank you so much!
Love that second one. Gonna build one. Thanx Man.
best video i have seen in my life
Im a free diver and I use a Hawaiian sling great work on it but the pole spear that you made is a Hawaiian sling
Super awesome video. I have to make my own frog spear now
When you’re pulling back turn the pole while you loading so it doesn’t bend 👍
Br aaaaaaaaa
Dude great video. holy outtake were killing me.
For cutting the spears, mount them in your drill lathe and then cut it, you can probably just rest the saw on where you want the cut.
Great vid thank you :)
Brilliant stuff! That Hawaiian sling spear looks great and powerful. Thanks for sharing.
Wow, strong. Looks good for diving.

wow this is food for thought !!!so many ways you can take this. blessings Sir!
Great build I love the power the Hawaiian gun has.
I enjoyed watching that, but your look after shooting the second type makes me think you enjoyed making it. lol. awsome man

if You want to catch fish Hiding Under Rocks or Crevasses the pole Spear Is Great For That... while the Other Spear Is Great For Long Range Shots...
awesome thinking man loved the ideas
Good video👍🏻
Nice! Really helpful video, sir.
I'm glad you liked it.
Nice builds.
Amazing 🙌🏽 thanks a lot
Great video 📹 thanks 👍
At the end.Oh just give up already. Very funny ☺️
haha i subscribed for the bloopers and good content keep up good work
Thanks, I appreciate it!
Great video!
I liked the face you do at the end 👍
Hello may i know where did you buy the fiber glass rod please may i get the link please?
Really Great Job!!!
I gave you a Like, a BIIG ONE!!
Nice! Thanks!
Nice work Bruh
instead of using braided line for the bands use thinner rubber to tie the band cuz the braid will cut through the latex over time
Very good video, but I guess that you need to scale down the prototype...i mean your rig is masive for a 6cm critter... And it will be awesome to see a micro spear gun!!!
Those small blenny are about to be annihilated 😂
Is there any footage of Peter using these spears? That would a cool video!
Nice! Keep up the good work!
It's the other way around. I fish with a Hawaiian sling, which is the one that wraps around your thumb, the pole spear is the spear with the pvc piping.
like your video great idea you have,,,outstanding
Very nice idea
Nice vid and Kool project. Can't wait to check out more of your vids. Subbed
I love the final part😂🤣😂🤣
what size rubber thrower are you using?
You are amazing, just the best i have seen so far... Can you make me one please, as i will pay for it.
should have used zip ties instead of constrictor knot. great knot but zips last longer
Thanks a lot ! Great video
Muito bom 🇧🇷
Very good 🇧🇷
Nice ! Would you sell them? We dont have anything like that here in mexico
You could save some time and get a bow fishing arrow from Academy Sports for about $4 and use a replacement slingshot tubing for $3. At least that’s what I did. Great engineering throughout though. Very impressed.
THE END SCENES ARE HILARIOUS 😂
Super good idea
Whats the diameter of the fiberglass driveway marker? Looks bigger than 1/4". Maybe 5/16" or 3/8"?
Love the bloopers
Is there anything stronger I can use as the pole?
Show tks Obrigado por compartilhar 😀
cool video very crafty
Great invention!

awesome video im so gonna be making these thanks for posting
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it!
Man make a speargun and very cool video
Very nice. Thank You.
great video..wow.. thank you so much. you are great.
wow i bet the hawaiin spear would be great for frogging and snakes !!!
true that!
Great video thanks for the how to ......
deffinatly awesome👍👍
You should team up with kipkay. Your amazing
félicitations, explications claires et vidéo sympa 👍
Shaka brah! 🌴🐠🐟👍🏽
the hawaiian spear would destroy the fish
There's a lot more resistance in water than air.
And you can pull it less
Makify1
Hmm never thought about it. Thanks
Piu di pai qi
Heat gun can make the fiberglass brittle - this can be an issue when making weapons so be careful if you're using a heat gun to remove the stickers
Great job with the video! But I don't like the use of the fiberglass rod.. had more fiberglass splinters than I can count.. awesome tho!
These spears would be awesome for lionfish!
Yes, I think they would.
can i use same way to make bigger spears
Yes. But if you use a pole spear I suggest putting a metal such as aluminum before the fiber glass or carbon so it does not snap!
nice video ,thank you very much
if you do a little research, you'll find Hawaiian spear thingys had a simple toggle trigger so they can be used with one hand.
Hinge gun
U should have drilled a small hole in the marker to put string through it and that way you could have pulled the fish back
Best part is Ending
Hawaiian sling spear seems the better choice, more power, more accurate while pole spear looks dangerous... imagine u accidentally let go at 8:46 towards ur face.
true. but at that power you would annihilate the fish
