I’m writing a novel right now. Will be out hopefully before summer. 1995, princes Diana meets with JFK Jr and falls in love with him. They break off their failing relationships, and marry in 1997 to start a family. After surviving a plane crash in 1999, both of them commit to serving their purposes in life, and so John runs for Senate in 2000. From there we see both of these people live throughout the decade influencing events, until he runs for president in 2008. Eventually, Diana makes it to the White House as the First Lady. And we see an alternate presidency of a Kennedy instead of Obama.
Lest Darkness Fall is one that's rarely talked about, but is very pivotal to the alternate history genre. It was one of the earliest modern examples of it (along with a Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court) and has been cited by Harry Turtledove himself as sparking his history in alternate history.
did you use the same iceberg as AlternateHistoryHub? also it would be really cool if you covered the Monument Mythos fully as it seems you have surface knowledge but you should cover it and learn more about it.
One of the most interesting things about 1984 and how it applies to today is that they removed the word “bad” from the lexicon so you couldn’t be negative, so if you want to say something is bad you say it’s “un-good” instead. Fast forward to today, you can’t say “suicide” on TikTok and now everyone says “un-alive” instead. It’s hardly as dystopian as Orwell envisioned but it’s sort of strange that nobody is really talking about it.
I absolutely *hate* companies that think they can just automatically censor "bad words" and not have to do any actual content moderation. It doesn't even solve the problem of people saying what you're trying to prevent them from saying. People will just change a character to a special character, spell it in leet, spell it backwards, use other words ("sewer slide"), or just come up with an entirely different word for the exact same thing. It solved nothing other than making communication inconvenient to everyone involved, including those trying to have a serious conversation. The solution to bad language on your platform is human moderators, not some fancy algorithm that even 12-year-old ROBLOX kids can bypass.
That is actually a good observation! Institutional subjugation is so impersonal nowadays “unalive” is a phrase that was invented by the TikTok *community* instead of a top-down ministry of truth sort of situation like 1984. I personally have disdain for 1984 as the book itself though bc it does precisely that, create a ridiculous top-down authoritarian regime that couldn’t exist irl without tackling the actual societal pressures that lead to/proliferate totalitarianism in the first place.
I see your point 100% although I'd argue that euphemisms have always been around. Also social media isn't really a representation of the real world. The way I look at it would be like being in a room full of children within earshot. The word suicide would probably have been changed for kids 20 or 40 years ago too
