Throughout the play, the nurse is seen as a loving and caring character towards Juliet almost like a mother and daughter relationship. Other character in the play see the Nurse only as an employee. For example Lord and Lady Capulet who order her around and only refer to her as Nurse. An example of this is “Nurse where is my daughter? Go fetch her for me” which show Lady Capulet ordering her around almost dehumanising her. This however would have been normal thing in the Elizabethan time, as maids and servants would be a very common to have if you were in the upper class. This dehumanising attitude contrast with the way the nurse treats Juliet. It is clear from the beginning of the play that the Nurse sees Juliet as more than just an employer. The Nurse seems to know Juliet more than even Lady Capulet which is made clear when Lady Capulet asks for Juliets age and the Nurse replies with “Faith, I can tell her age unto the hour”. This implies that the nurse has precise knowledge on Juliet she doesn’t just know her age in year but instead down to the “hour”. This leads us to question, as an audience, if the nurse sees Juliet as a surrogate daughter. Later in the scene we learn how the nurses own daughter has died who would have been a similar age to Juliet. So the grief of losing her own daughter could have lead her to believe and see Juliet as her own. Which is why she shows love and supportiveness outside of her job which shows the audience she is acting more like a mother figure to Juliet than a servant.
Hey! I'll be honest, I'm always very wary of making predictions! I just wouldn't want to make a wrong prediction and have lots of people revise the wrong things 😅
