  • ZX Spectrum 1-bit multichannel music by Tim Follin. Recorded from the real hardware.
    Yerzmyey says about 1-bit music:
    Many people think that attaching AY chip into ZX Spectrum was a regress. AY has only 3 channels of sound and pretty simple square wave based synthesis, whereas music generated by Spectrum's native sound-source, the Z80 chip (with help of ULA chip) was expandable to even 8-10, even 12 channels (software mixing) and it was able to generate really interesting envelopes.
    This music has been written by Tim Follin. I strongly doubt it would sound good on 3 channels only and simple square-wave synthesis.
    What is interesting, he has never made such great songs for any other music-chip or other platforms.
    And I say:
    TIM FOLLIN IS A GENIUS!

    Yes, Tim Follin was a total genius. Agent X and Agent X II being my personal favorites.

    When i heard music from Chronos by Follin - it was mindblowing. Today i read that my favourite music from C64 Bionnic Commando was also his work! And now this ....Young genius!

    That's a great rendition to the Tron Scherzo, from the 1982 movie.

      @@yrnteao But it is not sampled. It's completely created by machine code on the ZX Spectrum's Z80. The original Speccy only had one sound channel, pure sinus waves only and could not play music at different loudness levels. Add to that the fact that the Z80 stopped all other activities while playing some sound and you might get an idea just how utterly impressive this music by Tim Follin is!

    "Many people think that attaching AY chip into ZX Spectrum was a regress".
    Just notice that this (native sound-source) kind of music utilizes 100% of the processor time! However AY music takes as few processor time as nothing. You could even use BASIC and editing your program while playing AY music, actually.

    can't you use both the AY and the beeper simultaneously, though?

    • @SechsFluegel
      @SechsFluegel 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh yes, of course you can use both the AY chip and the beeper. A number of games do so giving the ZX Spectrum 128 models 4 channels at least to play with.

      Tastes differ, obviously. To my ears this is Tim Follin's best music on the ZX Spectrum.
