    I grew up with the original book by Roald Dahl, who notoriously hated the movie’s change to the ending so much he stood outside movie theaters with a megaphone telling people not to watch it.
    The original ending (spoilers) is darker than the movie: Luke is never turned back into a human but stays a mouse, fated to die in a couple of years due to a mouse’s short lifespan. But he celebrates this because he will die at the same time as his grandma, who only has a few years left to life in her old age. We never learn of Bruno’s fate, but it is speculated (half-seriously) his parents drowned him in a bucket of water.

      The most annoying thing about the Dahl with a megaphone story is that most people wouldn't've recognised him and would have just thought him some random nutter. Talent over fame, for sure.

      Don't watch this movie, it's not for kids despite appearances, it's a miserable story about two children who have their lives robbed from them.
      Yeah I'm guessing a lot of people tuned him out, a fantastic writer who couldn't understand that changing the source material was necessary to create a kid's movie, as opposed to the Diary of Fievel mouskovits.

      Just remember that Roald Dahl was quite an awful and cantankerous human being. His publisher dropped him because he kept sending dozens of hateful letters demanding that they give him a very specific type of pencil. He also serial cheated on his wife and was openly anti-sematic. It's a miracle his books managed to escape most of his terrible character traits, though he did have to change the Oompa Loompas into little orange men, as they were originally pigmy black people. The publisher couldn't let that little bit of racism through from the start.

    I just realized that the Grand High Witch had to have thoroughly tested her potion, but she wasn't aware that the mice can talk, which means she's been transforming and immediately stomping children a LOT.

    • @MuljoStpho
      @MuljoStpho 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Hmmm... If my copy of the book was somewhere easy to get to I'd kinda want to check what that had to say about the invention of that potion. I seem to recall the book going into a lot of detail about the ingredients in the potion. (I think in the book she was just providing the recipe to them, not pre-made vials.) Lots of random objects were being used symbolically in it to channel the grand high witch's intentions into it. Specifically I remember an alarm clock being an ingredient, to create the timer from ingestion until the potion takes effect. I forget if any testing was mentioned in the book or if she just had faith in her genius potionmaking skills and expected it to meet expectations... Although it is named as the 86th version of the potion so that does suggest 85 failed attempts so she would've needed testing to know that it needed refinement all those times.
      Anyway, awfully short-sighted to only verify successful transformation and to not observe long term effects. They may be hoping that all the kids turned into mice just end up dead soon after, but they can't guarantee it. And it'd be wise for them to verify that the transformation won't reverse itself if the kid lives long enough as a mouse. (Sure we know from our outside perspective watching the movie or reading the book that it's permanent. But how can the witches be certain of that?)

    • @Palitato
      @Palitato 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@MuljoStpho Even if they did do any testing, would you want to be the mouse to reveal to the witch that you could talk? I think if I'd been turned into a mouse by a witch, I'd probably keep my mouth shut out of utter fear she'd do something even worse.

Normally its white bread, where you spread a layer of Philadelphia cream cheese on the top slice and bottom slice with one or two layers of thinly sliced cucumber in between. Funny I did not like reading harry Potter because I could not clearly imagine the junk they had to get past in the castle. The rest of the books read better. It's sad to me that books like this one (Witches) and ones like IT are much more graphic and dark than the movies.

    Yes, the weather is often overcast in Norway.... though the hotel is actually in England and not in Norway. The Grandmother's from Norway originally, but the family lives in England. (Roald Dahl's parents were from Norway, but he himself grew up in England, though he spent his childhood summers in Norway with his grandparents. Apparently, the grandmother in this story is based on Roald Dahl's own grandmother! ) ^_^

Imagery that kids would remember for years later. I think I was a little too old for this type of movie when it came out. It hits home much better with little kids. I enjoyed your review. There was a remake of "the Witches"a year or so back and it wasn't nearly as good as this one!
    The original ending is that the boy and Grandma plan to spend the rest of their lives hunting witches and making the Formula to turn them into mice. The boy, even though he won't live that long given he is now a mouse, is glad he won't outlive his Grandmother.
