So on any actual audio inputs (guitars, trumpet, vocals etc) you should use EQ to remove resonant peaks, level out the volume manually across all clips (this is called "riding"), and then use compression to even it out the last bit. After that, use reverb/delay effects as desired. For MIDI instruments you want to make sure your note velocities aren't causing wonky jumps in volume or change in the instrument sound. After that your best friends are reverb or panning to give the MIDI instruments depth.
