  • 1979 ALIEN 18" Action Figure by KENNER TOY COMPANY
    Designed by H.R. GIGER (Feb 5, 1940 - May 12, 2014) R.I.P
    Trivia : Besides the fact that the ALIEN was pulled off the shelves in toy stores because parents complained that the toy was too scary and made their kids cry,
    Kenner Toy Company had gone as far as to actually destroy the ALIEN molds so no more ALIENs could be made.
    I heard this information about "Kenner destroying the molds" back in 1991.
    A loose ALIEN complete (no box) depending on it's condition, can go for $200.- to $315.-
    Should have the clear dome, inner (2 parts) jaws, and the back "fifth" spike.
    The box alone, complete, can go for
    $195.- up to $275.-
    Condition of course make a difference, should have the red insert, thin clear plastic window and if possible, the straps to tie the KENNER ALIEN down.
    The double sided b/w POSTER that comes with the KENNER ALIEN alone can average
    a price of $25.- to $55.-
    A MINT 1979 KENNER ALIEN in a mint sealed box
    with poster,
    ( never played with or taken out of the box),
    no creases, no tears or wear on the box can go for
    $850.- to $ 2,600+.- (super mint rare condition) depending on the demand for it and the time of year.
    An ALIEN missing clear dome, back spike, inner jaws tends to sell for $60.- to $130.- (mostly in the $75.- range)
    Excerpts at the end of this video are from the movie ALIEN

    This was my favorite toy from the time I got it at Christmas (1979 or 80... not sure which) until I no longer played with toys. Man, I sure wish I still had it.

    Very happy I've got mine. It's a favorite in my collection amongst all the 1/4 scale NECA's, Super7's, Tsukuda Hobby variants and my four Gentle Giants. Very nostalgic.

    I remember seeing one of these on display at a store (not a toy store, just out of the box as if someone thought it was just so cool) as a kid of 4 or 5 and being slightly creeped out by it, as if it had some sort of supernatural power. I had not seen the movie at the time but I thought at the time the movie must have been horrifying.

    I SOOOO wanted this toy when I was 5 yrs old but it kinda freaked me out and at the same time my parents wouldn't get it for me. Funny how they made a toy based off of an R rated movie back then. The craftsmanship still holds up to any toy to date. They still kick ass! I wonder how much they are going for now?

      Me too, but we couldn't find it anywhere. I'm sure I saw it in the Sears Wishbook, or maybe it was the Montgomery Ward catalog, but under whatever circumstances, my folks were unable to secure one for me. I remember my 1st grade teacher askign us what we watned for Christmas. I said I wanted an Alien doll, and she had no idea what I was talking about.

    Superb! I love this Kenner figure. Really one of the classic action figures and a shame it was not generally more available back in the early 1980s but it is obvious why it never proved a hit with parents. A pal of mine has a boxed one with the poster and I often ask to see it and work those jaws. Brilliant stuff.

    I can't beleive you have all those! When I was a kid a couple friends up the street had one of these. With the dome. I had no idea what Alien was at the time, (neither did they) but I know the toy was the coolest I had ever seen

  • @velociraptor4you3291

    Man, no matter how many times you hear it, that eerie music is just so freaking SCARY! But that's what makes it so awesome!
    BTW, I so want one of these figures! But, if you were to look up the old commercial for this figure, you'll see that it was aimed at KIDS. "Alien" was an R-rated movie we're talking here, and they made a xenomorph figure after it that was for KIDS? That's just weird.

    the music was usually used in the first Alien trailer in 1979. Prometheus had this trailer-music so that people could connect the dots (Alien prequel, etc.)

  • @johnlovesbridge

    It is amazingly detailed and scary for a children's toy.

  • @curcumin417
    @curcumin417 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The translucent dome allowing view of the 'eyes' makes it less scary. Still pretty impressive design for a plastic toy, although the Japanese Gundam -voltron, mech-warrior robot type toys from that period are the gold standard.

    Had this nasty as a kid. I still remember my Dad hiding it behind the fireplace on Christmas. We were eating dinner when he told me he thought he saw one more present lying around. Certainly one way to make a big impact - six hours after everything else is open you find this guy behind the fireplace. I seem to recall his inner jaws being real metal? am I crazy?
    Sadly, this fellow broke his arm and eventually got thrown out. Why do kids actually have to play with things!

    The tension is by small bungee cords wrapped around the screw posts. Same size you'd find on hair ties. It's possible after 30 plus years, the rubber in them dry rotted.

    Amazing figures, specially considering how simplistic and much less detailed action figures were in the 70s. Features like the removable translucent dome on the head and the actionable double mouth were kind of premium for that period.
    just 1 question, the dome most likely has yellowed over the years changing the tint it gives to the skull, so what was the original color?

    It's the "music" from the original Alien trailer. Prometheus just re-used it, very effectively I think.

  • @HightsWrite
    @HightsWrite 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I had one, but it was poorly marketed as a toy; it should have been sold as a display model. There was little action to "this action figure." It had no elbow or knee joints. The tail didn't move. The mechanical jaws were cool, but when I saw the movie (I got the toy first), I wondered why the movie alien's jaws weren't also chrome. The plastic skull dome continually popped off (why did they make it removable anyway?). One of the spines broke off on my brother's alien. Mine lost its tail.

  • @70sToys
    @70sToys  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @solidfreak123 , yeah, the dome is removable.... it just sits on it's head without snapping on. That's the way Kenner made them. If you turn it upside down, the dome falls off. That's why the dome makes up more than half of the price on a complete ALIEN.

  • @70sToys
    @70sToys  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @Modmart , That's cool ! When I bought my first one, I got hooked... then I bought more.....a total of ten...6 complete, and 4 with missing domes.
    I've been wanting an ALIEN since 1990, but could never afford it because at the time they went for $250. to $325. loose but complete and $500. to $600. dollars in a seal box. Now, a loose ALIEN can go for $100. to $200. (complete) and a sealed box ALIEN has gone up to $900. to $1,995.00. I bought all 10 loose ALIENS in 2009....lol
