Hartbeat - Light (1 of 3)

  • Featuring Tony Hart and Joanna Kirk.
    Part 1: • Hartbeat - Light (1 of 3)
    Part 2: • Hartbeat - Light (2 of 3)
    Part 3: • Hartbeat - Light (3 of 3)
Tony looks at various transparent and translucent materials, including glass, cel, tissue paper, water-worn glass and a wine gum. He draws a snail on a small sheet of cel, using thin and thick marker pens. He then uses his transparent and translucent materials to create a picture on a light box.
Joanna looks at a photo of the Trifid Nebula for inspiration, and then makes a very large painting of the planets, using spray paint, water-based paint and pot scourers.
Tony plays some animated computer graphics, which were created using MacPaint on an Apple Macintosh 128K computer.
Tony makes a simple pencil drawing of a church on a hilltop. He then adds shadows, making the drawing appear much more solid.
Finally, Tony experiments lighting up Joanna's face from different angles with a torch, and then uses the torch to write the word "bye" in the air.

Tony Hart was a proper gent, war time generation, public school etc. What was interesting was that he was happy to use modern technology like computerisation in the 80s to stay relevant and keep his tv career..

I always saw him as the David Attenborough of art. Used to love Hartbeat Like someone says below he had a very soothing voice. I can listen to him all day. Still can't understand why he never put my brother's excellent picture of 7Zark7 from Battle of the Planets up in The Gallery though.

I've just discovered Tony Hart and his work. Vision On, Hartbeat and Take Hart were long before my time, but watching him now is wonderful.
He seemed like such a lovely soul, I can absolutely see why he and his work appealed to so many people when they were young.

An officer in the Gurkhas of course. Went into a pub in Stoney Stratford just outside Milton Keynes many years ago, called The Bull. (there was another pub just down the road called The Cock, where we get the famous saying from) and Tony had been in there and did them a fantastic little picture of a waiter serving up a very annoyed and very alive Bull on a silver platter. The caption read something along the lines of "Is this rare enough for you sir".
