UPDATE: So I guess this video is a little outdated now, as most of the redesigns have been touched up to actually look better (including Meggy for some reason). I actually like what they tried to do with them, though Boopkins in particular still looks pretty weird to me. Overall, though, I appreciate them trying to make an improvement, even if I still have a few problems with them.

I’m seeing a lot of comparisons being drawn to SuperMarioLogan and how he redesigned his characters, however I think these are very different circumstances. Logan had all the Nintendo characters redesigned because of how genuinely terrible his videos were getting, to the point where Nintendo (supposedly) forced SML to stop using their characters as it might’ve painted them in a bad light. Glitch Productions, who are much tamer in comparison, have redesigned their original characters and yet still have Mario, so they clearly aren’t that worried about being DMCA’d.

Well technically they are still afraid of Nintendo. I mean the whole point of the lawsuit arc is to redesign the characters so if they actually get a dmca, those 4 characters can still count as their characters (oh yeah and merch). They aren't too worried since the Nintendo characters are still there, but judging by the lawsuit arc being a thing, yeah they are afraid

Part of what makes SMG4's old design (and in turn Mario's design) expressive is how much you can manipulate the face, they never feared mangling the shit out of them if it makes the scene better. I think the new designs should've leaned into that a little more
And you know the new designs are really not as expressive as the og ones when even the sm64 models for certain characters are less expressive

By "old design," do you mean the N64 models or the GMod models? I honestly really miss when he mostly used the N64 models and only used the GMod models for occasional goofy expressions.

Okay I'm sorry, but genuinely, why? Why does content that is either criticizing something, or trying to discuss something which is negative, have to be destructive and exaggerated? Like, don't get me wrong, yes, it is funny sometimes to see over exaggerated criticism, I mean, with people like Scott The Woz, most of his character is based on the fact he's a diehard Nintendo fan, but feels vehemently disgusted towards their less then alright decisions. But the difference is, that's a joke. And even while Scott does make the overreaching dig at a game every now and then, he still does make genuine criticism towards a game. What separates Scott and talking about anyone else though, is if you want to be discussing something, or especially, SOMEONE or their work, your criticism has to be constructive and understanding. When you are completely demeaning, harsh, and downright cruel, it not only takes away from the criticism you are trying to give, but also makes you look worse. This is why I hate drama and drama coverage so much nowadays, because what can start off as a minute issue can snowball into an ever-growing all around hate. People can really start to get ahead with theirselves sometimes, and I think hearing grounded, constructive, and patient criticism is what people need to consider more. So, look, I'm sorry if this isn't the type of content for you. Don't know what your reasoning is for wanting more destructive content, but please, do let me know.

So being calm and reserved equals no emotion. I understand most of the views on TH-cam come from kids who enjoy watching grown men yell at their camera. But if you can't be allowed to express opinions, without resorting to hyperbole. That is ultimately harmful to the content creator.
Look at Etika. His entire channel revolved around his energy and trying his hardest to entertain that group of people who enjoy the over exaggerating commentary community. But when he started to bring in his personal issues with a more somber tone. Most of the vocal fanbase would assume he's joking. We all know how that snowballed into something far worse.
Point being, putting down people who create content that is considered "boring" is extremely toxic. You can make all the arguments that it's not as entertaining as the inflammatory drama bait. Just understand that sometimes people have to sit down and be genuine with their audience.

I feel like they’ve added so many new characters that the show is hardly as recognizable as it was even a few years ago. I do not mind new characters, but when there’s like 5 anime girls that all have 1 personality trait each it kind of makes you wonder if you’re watching a show about mario or about anime OC’s
I mean, I like a lot of the OCs, especially Saiko as she actually has more than one personality trait usually, but there are too many. Having Melony, Tari, Meggy, and Saiko feels almost claustrophobic and they crowd up the show, especially Melony who started as a joke character and now takes up most screen time.

I also felled off watching these, but around the time Meggy got a redesign, and honestly Meggy looked better with the older model, the redesign still certainly worked. The show is just very alienated with all these new originals characters being most of the limelight, compared to the older videos having a mixed of character models from other games, medias, or just random mushroom kingdom inhabits.
I think the use of familiar characters for gags or short cameos makes for a better viewing than a brand new one every single chance they had for a new introduction.

I joined the SMG4 fandom in 2017, but even I have to admit the older videos were more charming and funny than the newer ones.
I was one of his first viewers back when his content was brand new. The soul of the old videos is gone.
After he started with Meggy forcing the videos a more serious and unfunny tone i totally knew it was going downhill.
After years, coming back here and seeing...this, made me realize i was right

I agree with your points on the design, it's not good considering the background. However, you failed to mention another possible reason for the change. SMG4 has slowly but surely has tried to disassociate himself from the usage of other characters that aren't his. It started with the Meggy redesign and then him doing a new series with Meta Runner a while back, and now it's happening with characters like Bob, Fishy, and his own avatar. SMG4 clearly wants to make original content and creations without using other media as a crutch, but because he's done that for a long time it's harder than ever for him to stand out with his own ideas, since people will complain about the lack of said characters. While I don't like the redesign I can at least respect it, even if I have also stopped watching his videos.
As an artist myself I can relate to him probably being frustrated that something like Meta Runner was quickly forgotten over the usual SMG4 episodes.

I lost my interest in SMG4 last year and stuff like this are just nails in the coffin. It's clear that the Glitch team is doing something right since most new videos get at least a million views but it's just not for me. To those that enjoy modern SMG4, I'm glad you enjoy it but I can't get into this new direction no matter how hard I try to. I'll gladly re-watch the classic SMG4 videos but I don't think I'm going to touch these modern videos

Damn I thought I was the only one who stopped watching him since a year or two. The humor just felt so… bland to me. Compared to his older videos to his newer ones you can see what I mean with the huge difference to it, and the arcs to me just felt way less important and didn’t have much tension to them as they used to. Don’t get me wrong, the arcs are still interesting, but I’ve seen way less new ones than I have older ones. Same reason why I’ve kinda stopped watching TheOdd1sOut.

It's clear they are only doing this so they can sell merch of their characters. If Nintendo really wanted to send them a C&D order, they would've done it a long time ago. And the same goes for the overall transition from Mario recolors to OCs, it shows that Luke and company forgot what truly made the show special and now they're just using it to generate money while they put more effort on their original shows. But I can't blame Luke, he used the opportunity his channel had given him to create his own animation studio, also he made the channel when he was a teenager so his humor and ideas have changed a lot since then.

I feel like this odd redesign is because SMG4 has been having this weird thing lately where they almost always feel the need to rebrand. Like when they made Meggy a human and eventually gave her a proper voice actor just for her to star in a spin-off series and a period of time where she was made into a vtuber-style character, or how the terrible genesis arc and sequeling arc was made to not only trying to kill off and bury the early content and it's canonicity, but also made limited time merchandise of a character they just killed off moments ago. Or how the past few years every War of the Fat Italians didn't live up to the name of the yearly series because the challenges weren't exclusively between Mario and SMG4; a staple concept since 2011, and instead just pick different characters that don't fit under the quota.
I'm scared this redesign is just one of the many downgrades we'll be seeing in the future, but this unfortunately seems to me to be the case considering how things have been heading lately.

I never really minded Meggy's transformation into a human, or her speaking English. She's still a pretty cool character, and probably my favorite of the bunch. I did find it a little annoying how she didn't have her squid attributes anymore, as that was kinda the hook of having her as a character.

The “It’s just a meme channel” excuse works less now considering smg4 stopped being just a meme channel a long time ago, especially since he’s doing story arcs now. Now there’s actual lore and reasoning given to the nonsensical things happening (even if it contradicts itself) meaning the audience is expected to take it seriously to a degree.

My problem with smg4 is that *IT ISN'T A MEME CHANNEL ANYMORE* They try so hard to make it serious (with the arcs) and also really downgraded the humour as a result. They stopped using the Mario 64 models and changed the characters to make them marketable.
It's the thing with glitch productions, they can do serious animation, but let the stupid humour meme SMG4 channel stay.

I really dislike modern SMG4 because SMG4 became sort of a try hard with memes. He'd start forcing jokes while playing the role of "meme lord" instead of just having dumb fun. He lost touch when he started taking his own humor too seriously, and it was completely lost when he started forcing arcs and lore.

I hear that, when Meggy came into the scene I left and I'm glad I did cuz it only got worse as the years went on, I miss the classic era :(
my main complaint is that the redesigns are too childish looking and I feel SMG4's Mario-clone look helped makes the content look more "memey" because, "hey, he looks a like a knock-off Mario" but now he looks too perfect and almost cheap looking in a bad way. But so long as the content is funny i don't mind too much, except Boopkins, his redesign makes him look something of a children's TV show.
I think Boopkins’ new look actually fits his character a bit more. Not saying the design is good (or bad), though.

@@scottvgamer1163 it's not because of "lore" or the design itself it's majority because of it's artstyle and unpolishness to it that doesn't compliment or fit in any of smg4 memes or world around it.
Amazing world of gumball had 2 art styles to it for certain types of characters to fit it's world 2D has its own and 3D has it's own used in a way to compliment it's crazy world.
Smg4 used to do something like this using sm64 models and gmod which all gmod models during those times complimented it's wacky nature and had basically the same art style.
The new ones doesn't compliment the world or it's memes making it an awkward look and eye hurting.

I think another thing we have (or at least I personally) overlooked is the sheer amount of other smaller creators SMG4 has helped spawned over these 11 years, and how so many use Mario recolors as their OCs because of that. They even said how he inspired so many people in the WOTFI 2022 rap. They took away the one character that is supposed to represent the creator themselves, but also all the creators as a whole, since 99% of them were inspired by SMG4. Heck, the most recent animator they hired, cloud64, uses a Mario recolor for his OC, and I do not believe he will change it at all. It's such a weird change to keep it almost Mario, but not really.
The old design represented 11 years of inspiring content for so many people, including your most recent hire. Now that that is gone, the upcoming generation of Mario machinimists will be inspired to either create their own OCs (which takes a lot of time and effort), or just use SMG4's characters in conjunction with their own, essentially doing a self-insert into the SMG4 universe. If people use Mario recolors for their OC, that's cool, but it contradicts everything about the redesign. We take inspiration from SMG4, but the product we are shown isn't what inspired us, or we are directly using a large chunk of his property in order to do things, and that doesn't sit well with me.
Yknow, after writing all of that, I am really starting to understand why some people believe the recolors are better than the SMG4 OCs. It felt like a community and everyone was chill with each other, and we all came together to watch or make funny Mario vids with the bois. Nowadays it's more like we are doing this to try and get SMG4's attention and get hired by Glitch, because that's exactly what the likes of FM, X, and cloud64 did. It's like SMG4 is trying to monopolize this market, or at least extend his reach to as many people as possible, when in reality it was at its best when everyone was working with each other to make everyone better, and Luke just so happened to come out of the pack and make a living out of it. It's admirable, but has also been detrimental to the state of the community as I see it.

Your comment is very interesting. I feel like SMG4 was always a monopoly at least by 2014. Unlike the others SMG4 had something special, his consistency making videos uploading weekly and his innovation in changing the formula made by Megaman765 and MarioMario54321 by adding Gmod and meme sound effects. This made his videos special and appealing to a wider audience. The formula was so good that other people were inspired by him and imitated it and he was so big in comparison to everyone else that the people call them SMG4 ripoffs even if SMG4 wasnt the original because he was also inspired by Megaman and MarioMario.
Thanks to Kevin, who came out of nowhere, he was able to expand further into a company and create his own shows even if the main show's formula had to be changed due to TH-cam policy and his sence of humor changing with age.
So SMG4 is a profesional now and he has a very different perspective from before. As a profesional artist he would prefer to be more original and create his own characters, which explains the OCs and the redesings we see now, even if people don't like them, SMG4 sees this as a way of expanding as a creator and getting indepence from nintendo characters and their restrictions, so that he can become his own thing with more freedom for future stories, shows or merchandising.
Personally I prefer 2014-2017 SMG4, but I understand why he changed and admire it. If I was a creator I would make what I want and I think SMG4 is like this as well. Creating is hard and if he was forced to make and old styled episode it will come out bad because his inspiration isnt aligned with that style anymore. I think a lot of people don't understand that and that's why they keep asking SMG4 to make videos in the old style to no succes because he won't listen to them anymore as he wouldnt be able to please them anyway.

To be honest it is a topic. Basically comes down to how characters were written across both eras whether they were original or not. How they fit into the verse. Bringing the likes of FM and X back as regulars is about making sure their distinct quirks are still there. Some people are keen to just do their own thing or create something closer to Classic SMG4. Luke seems keen to only go for his modern direction, so if people just try to do their experimentations we can have a big community

I highly doubt he is trying to monopolize the machinima market. Machinimas are not exactly as big as they were back in 2013. Especially Mario 64 ones. SMG4 is probably one of if not the biggest Mario machinimia series on the internet but I believe GLITCH is slowly trying to move away from SMG4 for there other projects. I theorize that once GLITCH is able to become as popular or more popular than SMG4, the SMG4 series will be dropped. The redesigns show that GLITCH don’t seem to care that much about the channel’s history. They just want to milk as much money from it as possible.
I'm happy for him, he's come a long way. I'm glad he's doing what he loves. I've been a fan of the channel since 2014. But ever since he began doing character arcs, I haven't been tuning in as much as I have in the past. And to be frank, I think these redesigns were the nail in the coffin for me. I wouldn't be opposed to a spinoff series with the new designs. That way he could still make Mario machinima and not have wasted his time and effort making those models. As for right now though I'll probably take a break from his content.
honestly, the meggy redesign gave me some form of ptsd. it was the first character i was fully invested in, and the moment the redesign was revealed i almost cried. i stopped watching smg4 stuff (tuned in for meta runner a little bit), and i still wince every time i see a long orange haired inkling in game.

Taking an inherently scrappy, earnest style like Mario 64/Gmod machinimas, something that I hold dear due to its charm and lo-fi nature, a style not made out of want or desire, but out of necessity with using the tools that you have, and then turning it into something I can only describe as memetic white noise, feels like a move specifically designed to annoy me.
I am SO SORRY, but the censored F word caught me off guard and sent me into a roaring laughter. I love how passionate you are about this topic, it’s interesting to hear you talk about it. Personally, I don’t have any feelings on this whole situation - after all, I’ve never been a fan of SMG4 to begin with. But even from the perspective of an outsider like myself, yeah this redesign is kinda trashy, not gonna lie.

Honestly my answer for why the redesigns happened was so he could more merchandise. After all, he pitched figures as SOON as the episode ended. Also I feel like it was carried in the original series to make it marketable and consistent. Not that I like it though, I REALLY wish marketing wasn't the focus.
The smg4 redesign it is a symbol of change, of the fact we will never have episodes like the past, of wacky bloopers, the fact that we never can have things go back to how it was, no more just Mario and smg4, now it must include an oc, Mario is the person on screen the most, but now, he doesn't feel like the main character, he is just around to make the oc characters look better in comparison, Mario no longer is just dimwitted, but now just brain dead, the characters no longer bounce off each other in a fun way, which leads to what is ment to be a funny moments to feel... Bland, more or less the episodes will try and push something onto us, like the new murder drones series, where episodes will be broken into what feels like an ad, he is constantly pushing merchandise on us, with those little verisons of characters, the redesigns feel more like... The death of the character

The smoothness of the designs are what really get me, that leads to models being extremely difficult to have more expression put into them because the model can't be manipulated as easly as someone like Mario's can.

I think you’re exactly right when you talk about how it looks bland. What makes Mario’s face so distinct is his slightly chubby face, his big nose, and his mustache. And yes, the expressiveness. This new design has the same big eyes, small nose, regular proportioned face and even hairstyle that all generic “boy” characters have. It’s not unique. It looks nearly the same as the cartoon version of Ryan from “Ryans world”. To me, it’s more forgettable than unique. I think what could’ve helped maybe was keep the big nose, maybe change the mustache. I’m sorry if I sound overly critical, but this is my take.

I stopped watching a long time ago when that Axel character came in, it's sad to see how much worse smg4 has gotten since then. They obviously have no more passion for smg4 apart from the ocs. It sucks that they are focusing so much on their ocs that they are leaving everything else that made them who they are behind. I also miss hitbox and hobo bros.

What I really dislike about this entirely of the redesign situation is that SMG4 is not really learning from past mistakes or listening to genuine criticism
(Fun fact: at one video, he asked to the fans if they're okay to him redesign his character, but since a lot of people said no, he still maintained his Mario design until the Lawsuit Arc without consulting their fans)
Considering this year's WOTFI rap battle (which was a big ego-stroke for the channel), they seem to acknowledge the show's criticisms like the arcs are depressing or seem like they care about money, but they responded in the worst way possible
SMG3 literally gave the "L + ratio" to the money criticism and Melony gave that "character development" is the reason why the arcs are the way they are
It seems like they know that their fans don't mind at all and just use an already existing formula that "worked" from the past but with minor tweaks
The whole Lawsuit Arc is just TH-cam Arc 2.0, literally in every beat

The DMCA thing is just part of the story for the videos, not the real reason. He just wants to make characters more original, because with that he can expand and create more stories, just like he did with Meggy and Tari, but mainly: invest in marketing and products without having to worry about copyright.
I liked the change from a personal branding standpoint, but your notes on the design itself is very spot on, especially your animal crossing npc comparison. Maybe there's more to be revealed with the expressions that will give his face more notoriety or flavor. If the backlash is so bad, I can totally expect a plot arc of a re-revamp to the models.

SMG4 is still funny, and while I am not a fan of those newer redesigns they aren't the worst thing ever. The TH-camr that had the worst falling off was no doubt AVGN.

SMG4 has been on a downward spiral since they added the anime waifus so this doesn't surprise me. This means they can sell more merch.
I haven't consistently watched SMG4 consistently in years, with the only videos I've gone back and watched in recent memory being classics such as "A SM64 Fairytale", "The Adventures of Mario and Luigi", "CraftMine", "Crazy Fighters", and "Smg3's Plan to Destroy Smg4 because he felt like it", and I still love those as much as ever, and are growing ever more distant to what the channel is becoming. It's a shame, but the classics will always be there to enjoy when I want, thanks for the update on a channel I used to feel super strongly about.
