It's very ironic that the message of Barbie and the Pink Shoes is to follow your own moves and be creative and these two (and every ballet teacher) is like NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! There's a time to be creative and a time to be classic.

The Barbie movies of The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, and The 12 Dancing Princesses are much better for the dancing in my personal opinion. Not perfect, but the motion capture was done by members of NYC Ballet and that’s pretty cool! I definitely think the animation in The Pink Shoes was more cartoony and that seemingly added to some of the clunky moments in the dancing. But I’ll always hold a soft spot for these movies because they’re one of the reasons I became interested in ballet.

My all-time favourite Barbie movie is most definitely 12 dancing princesses. The music used is by Mendelssohn which is absolutely sublime. The choreography and animation are actually quite good too. Great dance scenes.

This is what I came to say, that the other Barbie ballet movies did motion capture of IRL dancers for the dancing. But for Pink Shoes, the animators said "eh-- we know how to animate ballet!" No. No, they did not.
The whole point of the movie is supposed to be that breaking free and improvising is freeing and more natural, but Barbie looked SO much more natural on the parts where she was doing the "official" choreography. The parts where she was improvising looked SO stilted and awkward.

For me, the biggest problem with Barbie's costume isn't that they changed the color. Like you guys said, pink is kind of Barbie's signature color. (Though personally, the color of her tutu looks more pastel purple than it does pink. At first I thought that was just because of the nighttime lighting, but it still looks purple when the scene changes to daylight.) My big problem is that it doesn't look like a swan tutu, or even a costume that belongs in Swan Lake. If they wanted to have the "Barbie as a swan" look, they could've recolored the tutu to be pastel pink but kept the swan silhouette with the feathers on the tutu and bodice along with the feather headpiece. If she didn't have that super ugly, super cheesy crown with a LITERAL SWAN ON IT that looks like it came from a little girls Halloween costume, you would have no idea that she was supposed to be Odette. That costume looks like a mass-produced costume for Sleeping Beauty and looks oddly cheap and too heavily decorated.

    • @balletreign
      @balletreign  ปีที่แล้ว +21

We could go on and on about the costume, but the crown was hysterical 😂

The actual Barbie Swan Lake movie seemed so so much better, like from my limited ballet knowledge (I’m trained ballroom and Latin dancing but did ballet as part of my university degree) they seemed to pay a bit more attention to getting the dancing looking better and the music was actually recognisable as Tchaikovsky

It was just too funny seeing the girls criticize Christine exactly like the teacher in the beginning of the movie 😂😂
Even if this is one of the most "ballet centered" barbie movie imo, I'd say the others did a much better job (i.e. barbie in swan lake actually followed the og music IF I remember it correctly) but one I really like is Barbie in The Nut Cracker, even if the only dance they have is the final pas du deux with Sugarplum, I feel like they did that dance so well and it was so magical to watch (not an actual dancer so don't quote me about the ~authenticity~ but the moves look quite legit even if the animation itself isn't as good as in The Pink Shoes for example) and they actually merged the roles of Clara and Sugarplum which, at least in the movie, came out really well and just made the scene even better for me.
And of course, the classic we all love, Barbie and the 12 Dancing Princesses, is the best one movie wise (although I do have the pink tinted nostalgia lenses) and the dancing scenes are just too good. As far as I know, the music is original, but it does sound really really good and complement the dance very well, I just loved this too much lolol
Barbie and The Pink Shoes had a really interesting concept but for me, it landed a little flat in the execution, although I still enjoyed it for the most part because I just love barbie way too much for my own good

The role of Barbie is danced by Maria Kowroski and other roles are danced by other members of the NYCB. Watching you two Reign Dears react to Barbie's ballet is incredibly funny! Of course, I would not have a clue that anything was incorrect with the dancing but seeing you two flip out - then politely adding the appropriate correction - is really making my day!
I want to see Barbie dance as the black swan!!
Costume: I will not give Barbie a pass for wearing a purple leotard. Pink would be acceptable (only for Barbie), but purple NOPE.
    Also, why isn't she blonde?
My (insignificant in the cosmic sense) pet peeve: American accents in European medieval fantasy settings. I do understand that Barbie is American, and if she must, she can speak American. It might even cause a bit of an identity crisis if she didn't.
But there is no need for the prince nor anybody else not to have the appropriate British accents, even if they're supposed to be Russian or French or Bayern-Schleswig-Holstein-Württemberg-Vorpommern-Hohenschwanstein-Waldenseeish. There have never been, nor will there ever be, princes in America.(Before anyone says 🤭, "Tee hee, maybe he is Canadian," Commonwealth countries don't have princes either.
    Speak British, prince!)
15:47 I legit thought Jordan said, "I wish she had of shaved her fate." 🤔
It is so delightful that you can find all the positives, though.
If I had seen this as a little girl, which would not have been possible because that was before the printing press was invented, I'm afraid it would not have inspired me to do ballet, because I wanted to be a Jedi. And if you say Star Wars hadn't been invented yet either, please recall that it was "a long time ago in was in a galaxy far, far away..." 🖖(This emoji is from Star Trek, which takes place in the future. I don't have any Star Wars emojis so this will have to do! This emoji means, "Live long and prosper," a farewell wish expressed by Vulcans towards -unwanted guests- valued acquaintances and friends.)

I enjoyed the hair styles in the Barbie Swan Lake. Have thought about making a video on how to style your hair differently like Classical vs Romantic, hair down like Clara/Juliet & hair up like Odette/Odile/Aurora and then there's Giselle with her hair up & in the mad scene, her hair is down & back up in the Wili scene. How do dancers keep their beautiful long hair from getting into their faces, especially when doing fouetté's, pirouettes, etc, when dancing Giselle/Juliet? Also, do dancers who have long hair have to wear wigs? In some versions of Nutcracker, the corps dancing the snow scene seem to be wearing wigs and if they do wear wigs, how do they pack their long hair into the wigs? You both have gorgeous hair; what are your favorite ballet hair styles? What are your favorite tutu styles: Classical or Romantic and what are your favorite ballet costumes? Do you have clips of you dancing? Finally, what are the most complicated and/or tiring ballets you've performed in? Thank you & please keep up the great work!

The reason Nutcracker, Swan Lake, and 12 Dancing Princesses all looked better is because the dancing scenes were done using motion capture on NYCB dancers. But for Pink Shoes, I guess the animators decided that they knew how to animate ballet. No, no they did not.
As I said on a different comment, the theme of Pink Shoes is that improvisation is freeing and natural, but the choreographed sections looked SO much more natural than the improvised parts. The improv sections looked SO stilted and awkward.

There's an older Barbie Swan Lake (its the whole movie not just a small part of it), the costuming is still very Barbie but her swan costume is much more swan like. Its so pretty and sparkly and I loved it as a kid. Still my favorite Barbie movie even as an adult.

I'm so glad you mentioned how this movie fosters the love of dance and I can definitely attest to that! I remember first learning about Giselle and Swan Lake through this movie around the time I was 3 to 5-ish, and it's what inspired me to start on my dance journey! Even now, 12 years later, Giselle remains one of my dream roles, and I will always be grateful that this movie introduced me to ballet, even if it's not the most accurate. I would absolutely love it if you guys reviewed other scenes of Barbie in the Pink Shoes, and/or reviewed Barbie in Swan Lake, Barbie in the 12 Dancing Princesses, and Barbie in the Nutcracker.
Also, you guys have really helped me rediscover my passion for ballet and music, as well as expanded my classical repertoire! I hope more and more people see your videos because they're so well-made and I love how you guys approach these topics!

I have only danced ballet for a few years as a teen so take this with a grain of salt but if you're looking for a more classical representation of ballet then barbie and the pink shoes is not the place. A lot if not all of her dances turn into some more modern ballet version midway. Have heard a dance teacher refer to it as pop ballet. If you're looking for a retelling of a classical ballet I would recommend barbies version of the nutcracker or Swan lake ( both were made more kid friendly though - so don't follow the exact same Storyline). The nutcracker is the first and oldest one from all barbie movies - so isn't necessarily the best quality. My personal favorite of the ballet barbie movies is the 12 dancing princesses. From my knowledge It is not based on a ballet but as far as I can tell vaguely inspired by the fairytale "Die zertanzten Schuhe" from the Grimm brothers . As far as I know the barbie version is the only ballet representation of this fairytale. Other comments probably pointed that out already but all of these other 3 Movies were motion captured. th-cam.com/video/SaibrO3vcI0/w-d-xo.html in this video they tell a bit about the process of it. Might be interesting to look into.
As a kid I loved the barbie ballet movies but as a teen I was obsessed with the show dance academy. I watched it a lot. ( also I´m not a native English speaker so I hope everything is clear)

I don’t know how it works in ballet, but I know ballet and music are essentially intertwined.
In music, you never “make up the steps as you go,” especially classical music. If you want to make it your own, learn phrasing.
Unless you play jazz. If you play jazz, you can play wrong notes. Because it’s jazz.

What I want you to ask as experts is about one of my ideas about The pink shoes: I got the impression that in this movie are Sleeping Beauty references (I mean...there are more ballets of course included), but somehow I wonder whether Giselle's look and the roses rather hint for Aurora...and there's also later an enchanted castle and a rose in the sun melting...what do you think? The Swan Lake, Red Shoes, Snow Queen, Nutcracker references (and the Coppelia section) are clear. I*m just here concerned because it was rumored that Barbie did plan a Sleeping Beauty version based on the ballet after Nutcracker and Swan Lake, but needed to cancel the plan because of copyright problems with the Walt Disney company...

"There is a time and a place for improvisation." I think it's fair to say that a Barbie movie is always going to be that place. Especially a Barbie movie with magical shoes. We know it's not real. Little girls (or boys) watching it know it's not real. This isn't a source for learning classical rep, it's an animated movie.

This movie disrespects ballet, Tchaikovsky, and Julius Reisinger. If you make a movie centered on a classical ballet, then hire a professional ballerina, company director, and/or company ballet master as a consultant to triple check your work. Universal Studios did ballet dirty here. They obviously did not care to learn anything about the ballet world and just wanted to capitalize on Barbie and little girls who like ballet.
I was 10 when this movie came out and my studio director told all the dancers to never see it because it encouraged bad habits, like poor posture and not spotting. I never saw it because she was so against it and I can see why now. Those lifeless arms, horrible shoulder positioning, boring wrists, and wonky knees are a nightmare.

IMO Barbie “ballet” is to real ballet like instant coffee to a really good brew: the palest of imitations. Barbie ballet movies seem to have little or nothing to do with honouring or supporting the thousands of individuals working their hearts out for little financial reward to bring us the magical experience of real ballet. In terms of promoting ballet they do nothing that a good ballet book or any of the sensational performances now available on line can’t do better. I hope you will concentrate your future efforts on these. Otherwise I shall avert my eyes and play with my toaster and flame thrower!

Dear Eden and Jordan, Because I have never had nor have I now any interest in Barbie, and thus will not spend a nickel on this film, or anything related to that stuff, (being pc here), I can only assume from the expressions on your faces on the screen related to your review of what I am to believe has some kind of iteration of ballet in it, that it is not up to your esteemed standards of classical ballet. WHY am I not surprised? Garbage is garbage no matter how much pink it is packaged in. The general public totally lacks the ability to discern what is accurate and what is plastic, make -believe, echoing and reflected from a distorted directorial perception, personal as well as a massive public IGNORANCE! Go see Oppenheimer...a true masterpiece of USA history and choreographed political betrayal. You will not be disappointed, even though there is not a tutu in the entire film.
