The Significance of Ganesh Chaturthi
Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated with immense devotion and grandeur. It is believed that Lord Ganesha descends to earth to bless his devotees and remove obstacles from their lives. The festival typically lasts for 10 days, starting on the fourth day of the Hindu month of Bhadrapada.
The Katha (Story)
The Katha of Ganesh Chaturthi revolves around the birth of Lord Ganesha. According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Parvati created Ganesha from sandalwood paste and breathed life into him. She assigned him the task of guarding her while she bathed. When Lord Shiva, Parvati’s husband, returned and was denied entry by Ganesha, a fierce battle ensued, resulting in Ganesha’s head being severed. To appease Parvati, Shiva replaced Ganesha’s head with that of an elephant, bringing him back to life. Thus, Ganesha is revered as the remover of obstacles and the god of new beginnings1.
The Pooja (Rituals)
Preparation: The celebration begins with the installation of a clay idol of Lord Ganesha in homes or public pandals. The idol is beautifully decorated with flowers, lights, and offerings.
Pranapratishtha: This ritual involves invoking life into the idol by chanting holy mantras and performing aarti (a devotional song and dance ritual).
Offerings: Devotees offer sweets like modaks, which are believed to be Ganesha’s favorite, along with fruits, flowers, and incense.
Vrat (Fasting): Many devotees observe a fast during the festival, seeking spiritual purification and the blessings of Lord Ganesha.
Visarjan: On the last day, the idol is taken in a grand procession for immersion in a water body, symbolizing Ganesha’s return to his celestial abode, taking away the misfortunes of his devotees2.
