I have been making these potholders for decades I love them and people request them to be gifted to them again and again. They are long lasting and just fantastic. But you have taught me a new trick as to how to close them up. Wait till people get the new ones after this knowledge is applied. Thank you!!!
I found one at a thrift store over 30 years ago. I couldn’t figure it out for the longest time. Then I finally came across the original pattern. I love making it too. I’ve done stripes and so many designs. So many sizes.
I bought a 10 pack of cheap silicone square trivets/potholes off Amazon for like 8 bucks to put inside when using a thinner yarn. Works great. After doing one, you really don't have to mess with stitch markers....just know the side without the tail is the side where you complete a round and start the next round.
This is a very fun, easy, and rewarding project to do. I have made this project twice and the second time I played around with the size and made a larger potholder. Thanks for posting 💕
This was my first project which i completed last week and i was chuffed with it. I just wanted to let you know it works very well, tonight was my first night using it and i am delighted. I think i will be making more of these and giving them out to friends. Thanks again for the video
Best version I’ve ever seen. I was shown how to make these some years back. My preference is smaller; mug mat. Hadn’t made any for several years, so was having problems starting. Solution: youtube. I’m a beginner crocheter, but fluent knitter. Thank you for this excellent video. As soon as I find or purchase a smaller hook, I’ll be back to your video.
TY for your video tutorial. I liked the first part of the pattern but when it comes to the closing of the seam, I much prefer the mattress stitch, which is a beautiful, invisible, flat joining seam that I learned for connecting the Granny Squares. If you haven’t tried the mattress stitch yet, look it up and give it a try! Meema Makes does a most excellent video on it!
I didn't use a soft cotton yarn so I had a lot of trouble trying to close your way, I just slip stitched in the back stitches and it turned out great. Thanks for the tutorial.
Recently found a similar pattern, but sewing together, I thought there must be a way to nicely crochet together instead...and your video popped up!!! Just perfect! I so much enjoy making these! And I knit kitchen towels in matching yarn! Every family member and friend is getting a set! Thank you so much for sharing 🤗🕊️
This is my favorite pot holder to crochet. I’ve been doing it for 30 years plus years. I actually saw a couple of potholders in a thrift store and went on a search for the pattern. We called it a magic square if I remember correctly. Now it’s has had so many different name variations that I don’t remember.
I’ve also made this in larger and smaller than 40 stitches. Just make sure you increase the number of crochet rounds. I just fold and check mine as I go.
Thank you so much for these simple and easy to follow instructions! I am a beginner and am enjoying doing these pot holders! I just started and hope to be able to finish the one I am doing.
Just finished mine! I'm not great at keeping track of how many stitches I've done so it's kinda rectangular but still! Really easy to follow and turned out super cute! Thank you 😃
Thank you so much! Been wanting to make some potholders, but couldn't find any Iiked, and the no sew made it even more a given! have a lot of cotton and now I know what to do with it. Thanks again. I really enjoy your tutorials!
Thank you so much for this simple and easy to follow tutorial! I love the look of this pot holder! Your directions are spot on! Thanks for sharing your talent with us! Happy hooking! 👏🏼🧶✌🏼
such wonderful, clear instructions. love the pattern so much, too! I have made 3 of these in the past week and they turned out fantastic! so soft and scrunchy and fun. I used Malabrigo chunky merino with 37 starting stitches and they came out a perfect 7.5" by 7.5". (I like wool potholders because it's fire retardant).
Thank you for sharing this video. I only started to learn to crochete last weekand i have just completed this project. It is not perfect like yours but if is a good effort for my first attempt. I didn't do the extra bit around the hook that you hang it up with but the thing single hook will do me for the time being. I wasnt sure what i was doing with the sewing up or if i was doing it right or not but it looks great.
TYSM! This is the same size & close enough to my GreatX4 Aunt's pattern that I'm able to replicate hers to give as gifts to my family members this year! 🥰
@@SnufflebeanYarn I'm going to try that with my next pair. They're definitely still useable even with the original chain length! Though perhaps not if you have big hands 😂
Newbie, here. Your pattern makes more sense than another I used. However, I stumble with crocheting the sides together. Any hints as to how I can make it happen? I ended up cutting the yarn and sewing together. Thank you.
I am a newbie too what I have been doing is after the hanging loop and single crocheting the other side before I do the slip stitch I flip it inside out and doing it backwards then by like the last 7 or 10 stitches I reflip it kind of like hand sewing a pillow then it do the last 7 to 10 stitches the “right” way it makes it flat
I love doing this pattern I’m currently making a bunch for my family and friends my only issues is that some of them turn out rectangular and others are a perfect square but I do it the same every single time… do you know what my issue could possibly be???
I'm very new to crochet, so I have a question....after the 40 sc, is the next 40 in just the front loop or both? Thank you for sharing. I'm going to give this potholder a try😊
I’m going to be completely honest and say I don’t remember 🫣 Can you remind me which row you mean and I’ll go and rewatch the video so I can give you a better answer 😀
@@SnufflebeanYarn I believe it's called the foundation row. After the chain of 41, it's the second side after the 1st 40 sc. I hope I explained it correctly. Thank you!!
Has anyone made these with a color change for some of the rows? Would you change colors at the beginning of a row (i.e.at the stitch marker) or in the middle of the row?
@@SnufflebeanYarn in third portion of the video, your work is as you said “curling” on both ends but after 10 rows my piece is still completely flat, I’ve redone it’s twice and it’s still doing that ☹️
So after I get to the point that it starts folding and she says to keep going, am I going all the way around it now like she didn't explain anything at all
Hi, I read and reply to all my own comments so there’s really no need to refer to me as if I don’t exist. When you “keep going” you want to keep working round in a spiral in exactly the same was as I showed you before I popped the curled corners the right way round and told you to keep going. This potholder is basically worked in one big spiral of sc in the back loops. Hope this helps Laurelin

Before sowing together I put this inside out because I loved the pattern it made on the other side!

Could I add an accent stripe? If so which round would I add it to and how many rounds?
You definitely could, why not experiment and see where you like the stripe best
How many chains would be needed to make a larger version of this ?
Any odd number of chains will work
Has anyone made these with a color change for some of the rows? Would you change colors at the beginning of a row (i.e.at the stitch marker) or in the middle of the row?
I haven’t made any in multiple colours, you’d have to experiment to see where the colour change works best 🙂
do I keep working 3 stitches into the last stitch before I turn?
No, only in the first round.
Do you have a pattern for the no sew potholder using a double crochet?
No, I find single crochet provides the density a potholder needs.
What is the starting chain multiple on this in case i need to make smaller/larger...any odd number or?
Any odd number will work 🙂
@@SnufflebeanYarn Thank you!!
I might have missed it in the video, but is there q name for this particular stitch?
It’s just single crochet :)
Mine is not curling like yours ☹️ it’s all completely flat (I’m only on row 8) what am I doing wrong?
Without having the piece in front of me it’s really difficult to say. The only thing o can assume is you didn’t get your increases right on row 1.
@@SnufflebeanYarn in third portion of the video, your work is as you said “curling” on both ends but after 10 rows my piece is still completely flat, I’ve redone it’s twice and it’s still doing that ☹️
@kelseyheagy6505 are you 100% sure you have followed the instructions correctly? It’s the increases in the first row that cause the pocket to form
I’m having the same problem! And I did the 3 single crochets into the first stitch and last to form the corners.
So after I get to the point that it starts folding and she says to keep going, am I going all the way around it now like she didn't explain anything at all

Can I uses yarn60% Cotton and 40% Actylic
You can try, I’m not sure how heat resistant it would be, the acrylic might melt.
I have done 85% cotton and 15% polyester it’s fine for me!
I made this today and can’t seem to get the slip stitches that connect everything together to lay flat. Any ideas why this may be?
Without seeing your work it’s really difficult for me to say - are you working only into the back loops?
@@SnufflebeanYarnYes! I tried adjusting my tension but that didn’t help.
Do you have a knitted pot holder?
I don’t I’m afraid.
Size of crochet hook?
It depends on the yarn you use, but for Aran weight cotton like I used I would go for a 4.5mm
is it normal for this to curl when you work on it?
Curl how?
I'm using WOOL and it's trying to twist as it grows. @@SnufflebeanYarn
It should still lay nice and flat when you come to crochet the seam closed
Thanks! I'll keep going.
Why is mine not curling? I’m so upset! It’s going just straight up like a square …
You must have gone wrong at some point, without seeing a photo it’s difficult to tell
This is the farthest I’ve got into finishing a project… until you said “it should be about 24cm” checked and mine was about 34 🥴
I can’t remember which bit I said should be 24cm? 😂
Can you show measure in inches please
I only know my measurements in metric, sorry 🙂
just an fyi for anyone else with this issue, all you need to do is google cm to inches and voila...your answer is at your fingertips.
Idk why but this was difficult for me
I feel like I’m getting one less on every round
Make sure you’re working into all your stitches and not missing any
this was confusing, I kept having to restart
