Glad you covered Fever Tree. That first album is an absolute classic! I like Creation a lot, too. They were a special band who deserved better. You have a terrific collection!
Thanks for the mention Derek. The Hook song is from "Ironside". They did another track too, "Plug Your Head In", but it got blocked. Bobby Arlen ex-Leaves was a band member. Pleasure Fair also appeared on the same show, but again the clip got blocked. Pretty interesting choices Derek. Fever Tree always sounded like Sean Bonniwell to me. Totally agree about the S.A.C., "Wake Up..." would have been my Numero Uno choice too.
You've got some amazing clips as it is. Sometimes I'll be scanning through band clips & find out you've uploaded them. I forgot to mention with Hooked, Dennis Provisor would later do some tracks with The Grass Roots. They did a non-LP track "Keepin' Me Down" which he sang vocals on, kind of a similar vibe to the soulfulness of their 2nd.

Happy to see you do another video covering a label’s releases. Definitely added some to the want list. Since watching your videos on ABC and Mainstream I’ve been seeking out those releases. Totally agree on Strawberry Alarm Clock and Fever Tree.
Very Cool Derek, I wanted to do this on UNI years ago, but never did. Such a cool label. One of the best labels for psychederek, I mean psychedelic. Looking at the views, it looks like there is a bunch of Uni lovers out there. Thanks bro!
Hey man. What a great label. I have many Uni lps, including all of those that you showed except The Pleasure Fair. It would be impossible for me to rate my top favorite, since there are so many. Great topic and video. Have a great work week. Peace ✌ ☮ 🕊
Yeah, just my personal take on the list. There's several on this one label, hard to narrow down sometimes. But I had to put SAC on twice haha. They're too good.
Hi Derek, I have that Giant Crab (Comes Forth) LP. It has a sunshine pop feel to it. They can play welll but it's a bit too bubblegum for me. Smoke's Carry on Your Idea is one that has definately grown on me over the years. They were from Texas but moved to California to carry on their songs about motorcycles and love. A true grower for me. I love Poe's Up Through the Spiral. It has some really great zone-out moments on it. I think their name refers to an earlier name; Playboys of Edinburg (TX). Uni sure had some great looking LP covers, didn't they? The Hook, totally groovy cover and sounds. For me, that first Fever Tree is the label's alltime best. So glad you featured this great label. Thanks!
Thanks for the kudos Derek! UNI were really great with us. But after our our second album didn't chart we were brought in to Ned Tannen's office at MCA and told that they were going to bring in outside songwriters and strings and brass. We were not too happy about it, to say the least. The drummer and I quit after the third album (which failed to chart as well). On top of all that we had a crooked manager who after I left was fired. The remaining band members and a couple of new guys forged on and did the fourth album their way. The problem was it went in a different direction (which was needed after that third album) but it should have followed in step more with the first a second albums. There's so much more to this...not sure who cares....it's a books worth..lol
Great video, man. The UNi label is probably my favorite from the 1960's, although a lot of the stronger artists they had signed only wound up releasing 45s (like The Daily Flash or The Factory). Would definitely recommend giving both The Giant Crab and The Cascades another listen; both of those albums are quite solid and feature several stand-outs. My favorite UNi LP however might be one you didn't mention: ELEPHANT CANDY by The Fun & Games. It's kind of a combination of really tight bubblegum-flavored garage bangers with some more sophisticated vocal pop in the vein of Orange Colored Sky. "Take Me to Carmel" is the highlight IMO, just a stunning track. Thanks for the upload.
Great list of cool stuff Derek. They're not just becoming obscure, but sellers are asking crazy prices! No way unless I get really lucky with my lottery tickets. Start off with buying a secure, temperature controlled warehouse. Yea , I know...dream on!
I remember your ABC and Mainstream videos. I have a few from each label but psych records are too expensive now. More often than not I go the reissue route.
Love a lot of these albums! Call me crazy (I am) but I dig that Giant Crab LP! LoL! It has a sci-fi banter between songs and they use the song titles on the sleeve to tell a story of a Giant Crab coming forth! Funny! Love that Yellow Payges LP too! Orange Colored Sky is an album I picked up last year and it’s solid Sunshine Pop, Pop Psych. I dig both Hook LPs! And Fever Tree’s first is awesome! Man I never get tired of hearing that Strawberry AlarmClock album! So good! Incense & Peppermints was my fave song as a little kid so I was into them early! Oh Man! So glad to see you show East Side Kids! I thought I was the only person who dug that album! LoL! Glad you ranked it so high! Great stuff Derek! Peace ✨✌️👽✨
This was fantastic and I absolutely love label features. Ha, some of those you showed as obscure titles you passed on I've never even seen. The Uni label release schedule is and was much more extensive than I recall. I've sold off some of these including both Hooks but I have those 2 Alarm Clocks and absolutely agree they are super-good. And would rank the "grandpa" one as my favorite. The leadoff Drums tracks is killer. Agree on Druids too, never quite got into it. I still have Yellow Payges but ha, I better listen again. I know I dug the lead off track but a drum solo??!! May have to go. Lollipop Shoppe and Whistler Chaucer are definitely high rankers for me. American Blues I need to check out and give another shot to East Side Kids since it is still cheap. I think Dan at Dots and Loops digs that one. I would advocate for a White Whale feature too, or perhaps I'll do one. Although I know I sold a few of the heavier label pieces. Great work!
Looks like I only have 4 White Whale LPs, according to my Discogs. But I've definitely checked out some of the other obscure ones. Nice suggestion, I may do it! I probably have to spend a week listening or revisiting some when doing a label topic. But the UNI one was pretty much all from memory, so some of the info I messed up a little. Yeah, Yellow Payges might be for the UNI completists. It's got some strength, but the blues workouts like Boogie Woogie Baby...whyyyy?? 😑
@@PsycheDerek. Haha sounds like its about to go to my purge pile. I think I only have 3-4 White Whales. I had John's Children but decided to sell it when I needed trade. Unfortunately its only pretty average. And eeeek, sold my JK and Co but kind of regret it
I'm with you in the opinion about FEVER TREE, but they have an absolutely lovely song on their third record. I'm talking about SHE COMES IN COLORS (yes, a cover).
I loved that Uni label as a kid. I had no idea it stood for something as mainstream/corporate/establishment as Universal! I knew it mainly from early Elton John records. But don't you think that swirl should go in the other direction? Unless it's Australian? (Sorry. Hemisphere joke.)
Now I am sad. Of all these Uni albums that you showed, I only have The Yellow Payges, The Lollipop Shoppe, Fever Tree, and the two Strawberry Alarm Clock albums.
Excellent video and top 10 Derek, I've always treasured the Uni label, other releases I really dig on Uni is Emil Richards - New Sound Element "Stones" - Matthews' Southern Comfort and Alexander's Timeless Bloozband - For Sale are all standout albums, as well as many others, I think for me "Fields" would have made my top 10, but my number one is definitely right there with you!! Take care Bro!!
Yeah, I forgot to mention Southern Comfort. I still haven't found that one in person yet. The Fun & Games "Elephant Candy" too I used to own, it was more bubblegum/sunshine pop. Thanks Lonny!
Are you hip to the Crystal Circus? Some connection with Strawberry Alarm Clock -- management or producer, I think. Album title (something like), In Relation to Our Times.
Great list. I've always really liked the Uni label design. I've only heard about 2/3rds of these and only have around 5 of them. Oddly enough, I've never owned a Strawberry Alarm Clock album, not even the first one. Every time I see one, it's beat up. I was going to get the RSD reissue last year, but it didn't arrive at the record store. It seems to common to actually order from Discogs, but I guess that's what I will need to eventually do.
Yeah, I’ve only ever spotted Incense the most & they’ve been partied with. And I think a video like this might even drive up the value even more now! My bad…😂
I used to see the first Fever Tree album in some of my friends homes in the late 60's. The album sold moderately well. San Franscisco Girls was really more than a minor hit. It got played on the major Top 40 radio stations in my area in the spring and summer of 1968. It sounded great coming out of the car radio on a summer day. Its 'sound' is really evocative of that time. Along with Green Tambourine, Incense & Peppermints, and Lets Live For Today. A great time to be a young teen. The Mars Bonfire album; its not at all covers rather its largely his own material. He was with a nascent early version of what would become Steppenwolf with his brother, but he left when they went to California, his brother stayed on. The album is fun because it has several original versions of what would become classic Steppenwolf numbers like Ride With Me, Faster Than The Speed of Life, Tenderness, and of course Born To Be Wild. In fact his version of Born is quite catchy and refreshing given how overplayed the heavier Steppenwolf version became.
Really need to pick up on American Blues. I could never get into the Lollipop Shop album, mainly because of the vocals. I owned a bootleg copy, but traded it in to my local shop. Love love Strawberry Alarm Clock so much. Picked up on a sealed copy of wake up its tomorrow a while ago, definitely my favorite of theirs. I regret skipping over East Side Kids when I saw a copy. Man I thought I owned a lot of UNI stuff, but after watching, I realized I'm missing most of these titles. UNI has always been one of my favorite labels. This is a great list!
Vocals can be a distraction sometimes, I get that. East Side Kids will come around again. I see them fairly often. It's a pretty killer label design! But with all of the titles I mentioned before the top 10, there's a lot of chud to be found too. But that's with any major label I suppose.
@PsycheDerek. Yeah, 100% agree. There are quite a few duds on the label. I also sold my copy of Yellow Payges. I find that with most the titles I either really love them or don't really care much for them. When I first started collecting I was mesmerized by the label design haha.
UNI!! Absolutely killer label!! I have a friend in Memphis who collects uni and rare earth labels! I think he has all of these LPs! How about the American blues lp and the yellow pages🥳🥳
You & your audience may like to know that Paul Vigrass, of Vigrass & Osborne, later turned up in a band called Quasar, which also had among its members some future prog alumni
Nice UNI label presentation Derek. Of course, I have a different opinion than you on some of these, we all like what we like. What movie was the film clip taken from with The Hook?
For sure, this is not the most definitive UNI list. More of a personal ranking. I guess that Hook cameo was taken from a TV crime show called Ironside around '67 or '68. The user who commented below @brucster99b2 uploads a lot of cool TV appearances on here.
And here I thought your #1 UNI LP was going to be Neil Diamond's "Touching You, Touching Me"! ...I liked some UNI LPs you didn't mention like Emil Richards, "New Sound Element Stones" (electronica/synth), Lucifer, "Black Mass" (Electronica), The Fun & Games, "Elephant Candy" (Bubblegum/poprock), Marvin Holmes & The Uptights, "The Dragon & Other Monsters"(monster related funk-rock), Flaming Youth, "Ark 2" (w/Phil Collins and he hates that album!), and Richael Rabon & Chocktow, s/t (w/ex-5 Americans). POE was The Playboys Of Edinburgh (name change). ...Have you done Mainstream Records yet?
Yeah, the Diamond almost made it...😁I guess I did forget to leave off a few looking back. I used to own Fun & Games, totally forgot about Flaming Youth. It does kind of suck though. I have done Mainstream, ABC & Capitol Records lists. If you search my name and those titles, they should pop up on here.
there's inteersting stuff on the UNI label for sure JEREMIAH's drummer was Denny Seiwell, Later of Paul McCartney and Wings and their guitarist was David Spinozza, session guy who worked with everybody from McCartney to Billy Joel to Dr John. I have that Vigrass and Osbourne record. It has the original version of the song Forever Autumn which was repurposed for Jeff Wayne's WAR OF THE WORLDS rock opera later on in the 70s Got Fever Tree. great stuff I've heard Druids of Stonehenge. I wouldn't pay big big bucks for it but it's not bad
My doooood... Do you realize the horrible, terrible, absolutely endless fate you have tempted by not including the Uni record *made by Satan himself?* You should probably get workin' on a deep dive into 'Black Mass' by Lucifer PRONTO 🔥👹🔥
Worthy of a mention is G F Fitz-Gerald - Mouseproof. Strange release both musically and the fact it only got a UK and German release on Uni. Wouldn't make my top 10 but an interesting oddity. Gotta say Mars Bonfire probably would and Fields would have made it. I definitely need that Magic Sand lp as it's the only way I'm gonna own The Hooterville Trolley track. Cheers Nige
Ahh okay, I never knew that Mouseproof was on UNI. I left off a few for timing, but Justine was a UK UNI release too I think. But I haven’t given that a proper listen. Hooterville Trolley, that’s right. It’s been comped too, but I think the mix of it on Magic Sand was pretty good.
Orange Colored Sky and Candy Elephant I remember were disappointments for me, but most the other titles on UNI from 1967-1969 are quite good with many presented here, being total masterpieces...
You must not be aware of probably THE biggie obscurity on Uni!!I've had a few copies.Ever hear of Flaming Youth/Ark 2??It was out in '69-great album and features most notably-his first foray into recorded music. He plays drums and is on vocals!!Take a guess?!!!?Mr.Phil Collins!!He's 18 here.Awesome lp-check it out!!A few notable 45's-The Jades,"Flower Power",Sunny And Phyllis"I've Been Lost",and two of my favorites,The Fun And Games,"Grooviest Girl In The World",and The Sonics,"Any Way The Wind Blows"written by one Frank Zappa!!
I am familiar with Ark 2, but I forgot to mention it here along with Fun & Games. It would have never made the top 10, because I think it's pretty weak anyways.
you're are so wrong on your assessment of Fields lp -- such a wonderful album i don't know what you are hearing maybe wax in the ears- so much great guitar licks on the album a must listen definitely check it out
Good choices overall. Like the Hook play that one when I need a joint of bluesy psych rock. Fever Tree feer sure. But ain’t so sure bout the top lp. Now that’s just my opinion. But oh baby leavin Stonehenge off? Well that’s perfectly cool cause it’s your show and that’s the way the record skips. But Uni is a cool label and a good choice. 🖖🚀
I'm pretty sure I rate this first Fever Tree highly. I didn't do a proper revisit to all of these, but my lasting impressions are almost always spot-on. I get that folks love Stonehenge, but I'm in the minority haha. Not really a list to take super serious, just having a fun discussion. Pretty iconic label, fur sure.
Good stuff Derek. "Carry On Your Idea" by Smoke is a really interesting album, worth getting a copy in my opinion. Good to see the Pleasure Fair included, that album is essential Sunshine Pop for me. See their brief TV show cameo here... th-cam.com/video/Qq-5qqVTSHk/w-d-xo.htmlsi=dhDz3Di3jH2p5iBz
I picked up that Fever Tree for $5. the cover was essentially in 2 pieces with fully spilt and ragged seams all around but i fixed it up using some old donor jacket seams i had laying around. The record itself id say is vg/vg+. Happy to have it in my collection and i love the label design.
my 1st uni was elton john: honkey chateau. i scored some psych later on diggin through cut out bins and used record stores. found fever tree & lollipop shoppe cheap.

Tumbleweed Connection by Elton John was released on UNI in 1970.
Another Time, Another Place by Fever Tree. Better than you think. So is Creation. Kudos to a job well done.
UNI!! Absolutely killer label!! I have a friend in Memphis who collects uni and rare earth labels! I think he has all of these LPs! How about the American blues lp and the yellow pages🥳🥳
Back in 73 I hired Mud for my stag night, cost me a fiver! In fact, I can say I have sung with them.
You & your audience may like to know that Paul Vigrass, of Vigrass & Osborne, later turned up in a band called Quasar, which also had among its members some future prog alumni
I found the Strawberry Alarm Clock pun to be very tasteful 🍓

Strawberry Alarm Clock was originally called, A Little Bit Of Sound.
Oh OK, I know that show, never watched it though. Also, Buffalo Springfield did Mannix and I saw Micky Dolenz on Adam-12. @@PsycheDerek.
The 2nd Strawberry Alarm Clock is their only one I don’t have.
Will certainly have to check out your Mainstream LP top 10!@@PsycheDerek.
where;s neil diamond? he recorded for the uni lable.
As I mentioned, I focus more on the psychedelic nature of the label. Elton John, Neil Diamond & other artists don't make the list.
Fever Tree a fine album rarely mentioned.
there's inteersting stuff on the UNI label for sure
JEREMIAH's drummer was Denny Seiwell, Later of Paul McCartney and Wings and their guitarist was David Spinozza, session guy who worked with everybody from McCartney to Billy Joel to Dr John.
I have that Vigrass and Osbourne record. It has the original version of the song Forever Autumn which was repurposed for Jeff Wayne's WAR OF THE WORLDS rock opera later on in the 70s
Got Fever Tree. great stuff
I've heard Druids of Stonehenge. I wouldn't pay big big bucks for it but it's not bad
Great list. Wow, lots of views already. Agreed on Druids of Stonehenge. Not awful, but definitely not one of the best on the label.
Yeah, this one went viral for my page! I might keep these lists going. White Whale is up next.
My doooood... Do you realize the horrible, terrible, absolutely endless fate you have tempted by not including the Uni record *made by Satan himself?* You should probably get workin' on a deep dive into 'Black Mass' by Lucifer PRONTO
🔥👹🔥
Well Jesus was on my side & said it shall not make the list! 😉
@@PsycheDerek. Good point on the Justine Derek. I forgot about that one and that it's a UK release only.
Orange Colored Sky and Candy Elephant I remember were disappointments for me, but most the other titles on UNI from 1967-1969 are quite good with many presented here, being total masterpieces...
✌❤🔥🎼🙋🏻♂️
Mars Bonfire, writer of Born to Be Wild
I know.
It would have never made the top 10, because I think it's pretty weak anyways.
you're are so wrong on your assessment of Fields lp -- such a wonderful album i don't know what you are hearing maybe wax in the ears- so much great guitar licks on the album a must listen definitely check it out
Oh no, not the wax in my ears response. Again, I used to own it & it’s no longer in the shelves for a reason. This is my list.
Hey thats like just your opinion man
What, no Bill Cosby?
I always forget he was on there. I always see the Warner Bros records he was on.
I would own some of these albums just for the covers
Absolutely! I'd still pick some of these up that were left off the top 10.
@@PsycheDerek. it’s a cool.
dan ( dots and loops ) has a uni T . maybe you can blackmail him for it...
I used to have the Smoke’s other LP, not really my thing.
Ironside!
I picked up that Fever Tree for $5. the cover was essentially in 2 pieces with fully spilt and ragged seams all around but i fixed it up using some old donor jacket seams i had laying around. The record itself id say is vg/vg+. Happy to have it in my collection and i love the label design.
Pretty iconic design!
Randy Castillo was in Mud
I had to look up who he was, haha.
my 1st uni was elton john: honkey chateau. i scored some psych later on diggin through cut out bins and used record stores. found fever tree & lollipop shoppe cheap.
S.F. Sorrow rocks
