These are just a few of the Applications / Bunkai I teach for PInan Sandan kata. As with everything, start slow and take care of your partner when performing these moves.

So if the adage of "You fight like you train" is true then why keep with the straight lines when doing kata? That division of kata vs. bunkai seems to require two mind sets instead of the over all 1 that is more important, in combat?..Just curious other's take on this. I have years of martial training and know few arts that deal with the "1 mind" progression vs. the "2 Minds".

Karate kata, particularly styles like Shotokan, Shito Ryu, etc. were influenced by older martial arts systems, including Okinawan but mainly Chinese forms, hence the original Chinese meaning of Kara - Te or Ti ( China - Hand ). The linear movements could possibly be a reflection of the cultural and or Militaristic values of directness, and discipline embedded in the art. Just my opinion though.
