  • We joined Ceredigion Classics (find them on Facebook) for a road run in the beautiful, Welsh countryside. After visiting Strata Florida Abbey ruins, our route took us along roads used for Rali Ceredigion - great fun! Especially for the Ford Scorpio hearse and lowered Vauxhall Nova... Other cars included a BRM-engined Hillman Avenger Tiger, a Mk2 Escort van in RS2000 spec, a Caterham 7, Triumph 2000 estate, Mini, Land Rover Series 3, Mazda MX-5 and a Lotus Excel! A proper mix.

Might be worth trying a transmission oil change, and check round the gearbox to make sure everything is where it should be, and no apparent leaks. Not familiar with Daihatsu gearboxes, but my Mum can only drive Automatics and had this dying up hill issue on a couple of her cars, which was usually resolved by putting a decent oil in the gearbox.

Thanks Ian Carly lovely video to watch after a long day at work. Love Miss Daisy & I loved the Triumph 2000 estate. Always loved the big Triumphs. You are both a ray of sunshine & brighten my day.

I loved the Avenger style as a kid growing up. I knew nothing about driving or gear boxes back then but the Tiger was always my favourite (along with a dark metallic blue with white vinyl roof if I recall correctly), I'd all but forgotten the Tiger until this video and it brings warm feelings back to see one still running in a great condition. The Triumph 2000 estate was wonderful to see along with the Mini etc. Many thanks for sharing as it's dusted off some of my earlier childhood memories. Old memories of the long gone with the Chrysler 180 and 2 litre are coming back, they were like an inflated more luxury larger Avenger. Memories are like a quick turn back of the clock that at times are priceless.

IMO, this first generation Daihatsu Sirion is one of the best looking small cars ever, and this one is particularly nice in that colour. Simple enough reasons to have it on your fleet. It's also in great cosmetic condition, and it works. I'd do the few little rust jobs you found but didn't have time for, before they get worse and require professional painting, and call it good.

Strata Florida may be in the middle of nowhere but it had a railway station, inconveniently situated, on the optimistically named Manchester & Milford Railway which obviously didn't reach either place! Closed in 1964, trains ran from Carmarthen to Aberystwyth.

Auto transmissions usually remove about 200cc of power from an engine, making your Sirion in reality run like an 800cc. Whenever I’ve had a small automatic it’s always been the same

Great to see another wonderful video about Miss Daisy again! Btw here's something I heard that is a secret about daihatsus they say if u need more power going up hill with less struggle u can turn off the a/c button or turn the entire thing off and the car would struggle lesser that is something I learned when I drive my Sirion mk2 cuz. They call the A/C button "sports mode" 😂😂😂

Lovely video Ian. I think the reason Miss Daisy is struggling on hills is simply down to small engine size plus power sapping torque converter, she is a charming little motor. Listening to Mrs Hubnut talking about her sister not saying anything when she was young, my youngest son was exactly the same until he was three. We thought there was a problem and were seriously considering speech therapy, then one day out of the blue he started to talk. He's 41 now and hasn't shut up since.😆

Lovely spin out in miss Daisy there.
The curse of the hearse adding some decorum to proceedings and thus keeping the pace somewhat below that of the rally speeds formerly attained.
That said, some of the architecture and scenery along the way, is completely awesome, and always a delight to see.
Personally, I can never get enough of wind worn abbeys, or converted cog lofts and period churches that reveal so much of our past history.
Combined with cars, this one is a hit with me, so, ill give it five.

A very pleasing mixture, and lovely lovely countryside. This period of warmish weather just before the dark season has been appreciated, and it is nice to see the colour and that some greenery is still growing.
It seems like Miss Daisy's 4-speed gearbox just doesn't have enough ratios. Normally, changing up at the rev limit should get you well into the torque curve of the next gear, but Miss Daisy seems to run out of oomph at lower revs. It isn't as if the box is slipping - if anything, the clutch is locking too early and not allowing the engine to get into the torque curve. I wonder if these little engines ever had any gizmo like Betty's engine that varies the inlet manifold, or valve timing or.. anything that might generate more low-end torque. At that end of the market I suspect not, but you never know.

Calculating the power and torque to weight ratio of Miss Daisy vs your Berlingo. I get a rough estimation of 70 vs 73 bhp per tonne, in favour of the Berlingo. Torque is 122 ft-lb vs 79 ft-lb per tonne, in favour of the Berlingo.
Of course, being such a light car, Daisy will be more sensitive to load weight, but even accounting for the automatic gearbox, you would think that Daisy would be a little nippier.

I'd look for a vacuum leak on Miss Daisy, which could cause her to hesitate on kickdown/downshift. After the manifold issues on Chemmy, a vacuum leak impresses as a likely culprit.
Finding a leak would be as easy as spraying brake cleaner around the manifoñd and plenum and seeing if the revs rise.
