Excellent work on the cage!
One suggestion. The upper seat belt mounts need to be at or very near shoulder level. In the event of a rollover or crash you dont want them pulling down.
If you have room for another cross bar at the bottom of the back window, consider installing one so the angle is closer to the appropriate 10* range.

Figured someone would have caught this. Yes, please add a bar and raise them when you get back, probably to late now. They will compress your spine, which is never good, if you end up really using them. Good luck on the hammer trails!

I totally admire your lack of bull-headed arrogance. Few men nowadays can listen to another's ideas, regardless of validity. Wisdom and skill make you my favorite guy in the fab channels. Kudo's brother!
You should really add a harness bar for the upper harness mounts if you can squeeze one in there. The general rule of thumb is you want the straps level with your shoulders +/- 10 degrees. Having the straps at that steep of an angle can compress your spine in the event of an accident. If you were to wreck at speed, the harnesses could possibly hurt you.
Just looking out for your safety
The general public owes a lot to the people of racing and sports injuries. Not only do they provide MANY hours of enjoyment, but because of their crashes (both cars and bodies) and the repairs and safety mods, we are all safer.
When a football player completely destroys a knee and they rebuild it good enough to play on a pro level again, that's amazing. And now, people can walk away from HORRIBLE crashes that would have been fatal before. The car disassembles, but not the person.
That removable roof is almost like cheating for cage building. Looks good!

the front of the roll cage from the dash down is a little sketchy with the transition to a flat plate - maybe an angle to run along side of the plate to offer a little more stiffness
@@4PeTe2 For a stock car yes, but if this rolls over, it will most likely be going 2 or 3 MPH and the cage is just to keep the cab from folding like a beer can. This will work great for what it is built for.

We have been slowly working on a pontoon boat rebuild on our channel. I wish I had the pontoon in their garage. With their tools, and his expertise, and his dedication, it would be ready to hit the water in a day! He sure gets a lot accomplished!

Looking very good, but I thought you were joining the outer cage to the cab cage or did I miss hear you.
Right a safety aspect of the seat belts, the shoulder straps should be almost straight from a seat belt bar into the rollcage so just a fifteen to twenty degree slope down to the seatbelt bar you need to weld from left to right otherwise you will hurt your back badly in a violent roll over, those tabs need to be beefier also as you are rock crawling a lot any roll over is going to be violent as rock is unforgiving. I would also make bigger and thicker tabs so you have more surface to weld to the frame.
You would have been better off getting a set that actually wraps round the seat belt bar a lot better way of fitting them.
Be safe be smart check out on recommended ways of mounting your belts you will find that the angle and fitment of the shoulder straps is critical, love your work like your content and you have a great family.
Paul, you are so great at fabricating things! You frequently put yourself down, commenting that you finally did something right, but, in reality, you do a lot of things right, considering that you're designing and planning as you go. The few things that require redoing are par for the course, given the way you work. Michelle is such a great helpmate and support person, too, not to mention your kids, becoming ever more capable themselves. Keep up the good work, and the "can do" attitude - it's inspiring!

That’s one tight fitting roll-cage! Beautifully done! From an old pilot… remember, if you release your seatbelts when you’re upside down, you land on your head. Don’t ask..
Curious if you changed the coil pack(s) or figured out why you're miss firing on the engine. Roll cage looks great, have to keep the wife safe or no more catered lunches in the shop. You should also take a case of pop to Matt's shop so they taste better when you steal them.

I may be wrong, but I believe that with the harness you want less that 10° from level for the top mounts of the harness. May not be an issue for this kind of a build, however in a serious accident it could compress your spine, or so I've heard.
You are absolutely correct. No sports car/road racing type vehicle would ever be allowed on a track with rear belt mounts far below the shoulder. The physics are just wrong. It's a good way to crush your torso/spine if you hit hard head on. Sometimes you need more than rat brains to fab something this critical...🤨🙄

Years ago, my wife would cook cookies for my best friend and put them in a tin container. He would always send the container back with a note. Saying she needs more practice, meaning he wanted more cookies. When he died we keep the container, I always shed a tear looking at that container.

The way the seat belts are attached it will put extreme compression on he’s spine ! This would be a bigger red flag for a faster vehicle but still it’s nothing to just overlook

Shoulder harness mounts should be at the same height or higher than the shoulder. That way if your in a head on collision your body weight and momentum doesn’t pull your shoulders down. If that makes sense.
Yep, common in the aftermarket car industry where people bolt their harness to the floor behind them, which is really unsafe. They need to be mounted just behind their shoulders.
That was my only worry about this episode as well. Those shoulder harness mounts are set up to cause serious injury. If you run some of that rectangular tubing around the back of the seats right against the cab at a 10-20 degree drop from the opening of the seats you'll be much safer and prevent serious spinal compression injuries in case you ever roll over upside down.
Yes, at or just above shoulder height of seat. Even a roll over can cause you to beak collar bones or shoulders.

You have a great and supportive relationship with Michelle...excellent.
The locations of your shoulder harness mounts are spinal compression injuries waiting to happen. If you run some of that rectangular tubing around behind the seats at a 10-20 degree down angle from your seat openings you'll be a LOT safer and prevent serious injuries. As it sits right now, those tabs will possibly rip out of the sheet metal of the cab and cause serious spinal injuries if you roll over on the roof.

Cage looks great Paul! I would advise to add a harness bar and move the shoulder belt mounts up to shoulder height, the shoulder belts mounted low like that if you make a hard stop it will compress your spine

I've been around many race cars, been a helping hand building a few and driven enough miles in them myself to be really scared when I see such a, well, rat brained safety system build. That damn thing is 5000 lbs more or less. That cage welded to dashboard sheet metal, and the low, sheet metal belt anchors would NEVER pass scrutineering by any racing organization. Forget about your big feet and build the cage for safety...real safety. Put in a cross bar at should height behind the seats, otherwise those 4 point harnesses might paralyze you in a hard front hit.

The cab still comes off, the windscreen still folds down. Randal's (😄) idea on the dash section is pure gold.
I am glad they didn't connect the cab cage to the bed hoop. In case of really heavy crawling they can just simply remove the cab without worrying about crashing it

Those rear seatbelt mounts (welded to the cab) are a very weak link in a very strong chain. They need to be welded directly to the roll cage. FYI, the international standard for seatbelt anchorages states that these mounts must be able to withstand a pull of 22 kilonewtons for .2 of a second. You welded cab mounts would fail at about a fifth of this, IMHO.

I agree with all the comments about running a cross-bar at the rear cab window level so that the shoulder harness straps do not pull down on your shoulders under tension.
We failed the scrutineer check with our club road-rally car, years ago, for the very same reason (shoulder mounts shall be above shoulder level).

Love watching this build. First I would like to say I am just an armchair engineer and am most likely talking rubbish, but in the interests of safety I'm going to chuck my ten pence worth in anyway. I see there are some comments about the position of the shoulder harness mounts, what they say seems to make sense. My concern is the body structure that the shoulder harness tabs are welded to is not man enough for the job, with all the flitch plating and reinforcing you have carried out in other areas of this build, it seems a shame not to put a bit of extra strengthening in for safety. I actually thought you were going to put a piece of the cage tubing across the back of the cab behind the seats and attach the harness to that. Hope your not offended by my observations, as I said love your channel, keep up the good work 😃👍

Cage is on my definite wishlist this year. I'll be going external on my truck cab. Like others have said to prevent shoulder or even spine injury you need to think about raising the rear seatbelt mounts to shoulder level. Stay safe and hope you are feeling 100% soon.

You need to put a side brace on the back seatbelt mounts. They might pull on a forward roll.
If he ever takes it to the drag strip to make some fast passes he might need that. This rock crawler will be going very slow in spots where it is most likely to dump over, the tabs will be fine to keep them safe, even if they bend.

Did you get the FJ's engine fixed? On last trail runs it wasn't running purrfect yet...
Doing things nice because you do them twice seems to be the theme here, lol! The 7 P's applied more often would be a help, but fatigue and impulse override them on occasion. (The 7 P's are: Proper Prior Planning Prevents P*ss Poor Performance.) Love watching the end result, even when it comes out of an impulse! (Prayers are in order for your full health and recovery!)
I’ve never built a cage myself, but I recall a section in the rule book when my dad was doing mud drags and mud bogs when I was growing up… when bolting two plates together for a roll cage, the plates were not allowed to be dimensionally identical on the X and Y planes. Meaning the plates welded to the chassis had to me a little bit larger on X and Y than the plates welded to the cage. They said something about the bolts being prone to shearing off if the plates were identical.
They might have been full of it, or they might have been speaking gospel. I don’t know. I do know that I would look into it more if I were building a cage.
NHRA bolt in cages the plates are the same size, it should be fine in this case since i doubt it will see high speed usage and just needs to handle a tip over.

you have been thru a lot with the FJ 45 but the finished product will tell the story, and as you put it thru its paces as you use it , it will pay you back for your labor of love, i cant wait for you to finish the rat rod you just acquired , and i cant wait to see what her prosonal car looks like and i hope you acquired it
Well designing of that roll cage! Those seat belts beat seat belts in vehicles from factor any day. 4 point vs 3 point, makes much, much safer! GOOD JOB!!!
One of our engineers at Ford Product Development was killed years ago. He was passenger in a 15 hundredweight van that was driven at speed zig zagging between cones. The van eventually rolled, and the engineer was thrown out of the window and crushed by the van landing on him. The van only had the usual lap and shoulder seatbelts, but he wasn't wearing his belt. Of course they got serious about safety after the event, but it was too late for him. I think he'd have been OK if he had his seatbelt on, and he would _definitely_ been OK with full harness belts.

Yes, I am all for wearing good, safe seatbelts.
I always installed and would wear full harnesses, while competing.
I was taught that the rear top mounting should be level with or slightly above the shoulder height.
That way your shoulders are held back better than if the mounting point is bellow your shoulder.
If the mounting point is bellow the top of your shoulder then there is excessive free play for your shoulders to move forward in a sudden stop.
I suppose that this is not such an issue in rock crawling, except in a forward rollover.
4-point harnesses can actually be more dangerous than a 3-point due to the risk of submarining under the lap belt in the wrong circumstances and spine compression if the belts are at the wrong angles. Slow speed rock crawling probably won't cause any issues but anything at speed should use a factory 3 point or a 5 or 6 point with sub straps and HANS to do it right.

Oh Paul the FJ just keeps on looking better and better every time you go and add stuff to it!! That roll cage looks pretty darn awesome plus the seat belts look even more comfortable to wear them then most seat belts!! What else can Paul add to his FJ that would help the looks of it plus add some safety in or just to help out while bouncing over obstacles??!! Remember Paul keep up all the hard work buddy!!!

I really like all the technical terms you use while building, like " notch that a little bit more" and I need to take off "about a half inch" It hard to believe Botta Bing, Botta Boom isn't something we hear. Great video guys and the FJ is looking sweet.

You know if there is one thing I can't stand, that is vulgarity or videos filled with foul language. I have to tell you guys, it's TRULY A PLEASURE to sit here with my wife & grandkids watching Fab Rats & Matt's Off Road Recovery videos and knowing that I'm going to hear NONE of that ugly foul language while you're working or doing whatever it is you're doing.
Too many times I put on a video very much UNLIKE yours & have to quickly shut it down because of the profanity that comes out of uneducated people's mouths, they resort to profanity because they don't take the time to learn the correct words to say.
Just letting you guys know that as a family, we VERY much appreciate not hearing the vulgarity & foul language, no matter how challenging your work becomes. LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!!! THEY'RE VERY ENTERTAINING!!!

I noticed that when you do welding on your vehicle's, do you disconnect the battery before welding? I'm told that if not you risk damaging the electronics, is this true? Love the videos
Some electronics are more sensitive than others so it’s a good practice to disconnect the battery at minimum and if you can unplug the engine ecu
Disconnecting the battery doesn't necessarily protect the electronics. You also have numerous body grounds tying all the modules to the body or frame of the vehicle.
Lets say you were welding an exhaust and put the ground clamp on the frame. If your vehicle has oxygen sensors part of the welding current could flow through the sensor ground back to the ECU and then to the body and frame through the ECU ground. That would be bad. Without O2 sensors maybe you would be alright flowing the welding current through the exhaust to the engine which should have a pretty good ground for the starter. You would need to rely on the exhaust manifold studs to conduct the current because the mating surface between the head and exhaust manifold is probably insulated by a gasket. If there is corrosion under the flanges of the nuts this would increase resistance. This would cause the current to look for other paths, or it could reduce weld quality.
What you want to do is put the ground clamp as close to the welding area as possible, and always connect it to the metal you are welding. In the case of an exhaust this would mean connecting it directly to the exhaust pipe. No current would flow through the oxygen sensor ground in this case because the path of least resistance back to the ground clamp is just through the exhaust pipe. If you are welding a roll cage connect the clamp directly to the cage.
Electricity flows just like water (from high to low, through the path of least resistance) and you need to think where that 100+ amps is going to flow. As long as you place the ground clamp near the weld area, there should not be a reason to worry about the car's electronics when welding. And even if you were concerned about the electronics, you would also need to disconnect every single body ground to prevent parallel ground paths for the welding current.
I have welded on vehicles before and with the clamp close to the weld there is no problem.
