My brain says «get the FX3», my wallet is crying and says «get the A6700» … but since I ain’t got the money for either of those I’m just gonna keep filming with my iPhone and see what happens to my channel in 2025 ;)
This was me 2024, but I made up my mind and went a6700.. And I love it.. It's small and easy to use. Though of course I don't get a shallower depth of field and wider field of view
@@AndreSjoberg If you’re considering the a6700, I’d recommend the fx30 instead. (Coming from a filmmaker who has extensively used the fx3, fx30, and a6500.)
@ Interesting indeed, would be interesting to hear your arguments for that :) now I’m doing mostly video, but I *will* be shooting stills as well, skateboarding and roller derby stills photography, sometimes in low light, and from what I’ve gathered the A6700 has a mechanical shutter, the FX3 also has that, but the fx30 does not, which in theory might make the fx30 a worse choice for my use case scenario as far as I have been able to understand. Also the FX30 is, at least here in Norway, about 400 dollars more expensive, what about the fx30 would justify the increase in price? I do know about the fan, double slots, etc, but for my use, filming myself or projects for myself I won’t be doing hour long shots, maybe 20-30 min at the most and then mostly at 25fps and maybe 4k, I have a workshop that is usually pretty cool in terms of temperature - and if I remember correctly the a6700 has the new ai chip for autofocus ++ which for me filming myself and alone mostly should in theory be a + as well.
I’ve had an FX3 for a year and half and it has been amazing! Literally does everything I need without issues. Continues to impress me every time I use it.
I've always known you were a man of many hats - 01:12 (Sorry, Darren, I couldn't help myself - somebody had to say it!) I purchased a Sony ZV-e10 and I couldn't be happier with the quality, features, etc. It may have made me a Sony guy for life. I hope you have a blessed 2025, Mr. Naylor!
Did you also consider the ZV-E1 ? If not, why not? If yes, what made you choose the FX3 over the ZV-E1. I'm wondering since you originally picked the FX30 for the lower price, so I was guessing budget is a factor and isn't the ZV-E1 the closest thing to the FX3 in that lower budget range?
I got a hybrid camera and want an FX3 for the opposite reason. I’ve been a photographer for years and now whenever I’m working on video, my main photo camera is stuck in a cage. Sure I could dismantle my video rig to go shooting but it sucks. Thanks for settling it for me. I think I’m gonna pick up an fx3 this year. The base iso at 12800 sold me.
I just recently sold my Fujfilm X-H2s cause the auto focus was so bad. Got a used FX3 and It's amazing! Very easy to use and the autofocus is very very good.
For all those reasons, I also bought an FX3 this year. It simply had everything I needed in a compact size, which is great as I am also doing my own filming. It's just an amazing camera.
id argue this camera is the most industry defining hybrid camera since the 5d mark ii, obviously it has its shortcomings with no 6k8k internal raw open gate etc, but for the price range it carries a nearly flawless video sensor that holds a legacy that will hopefully be remembered for years to come also having that extra native iso even in not low light situations allows u the option of less depth of field or higher shutterspeeds and just generally getting more creative control over ur image even if your in good lighting
I bought the FX3 two months ago and I LOVE IT! I have also used the FX30, but since I often shoot in places where I don't control the light, I really wanted the 12,800 ISO. So I also sold the FX30, and I have not looked back. Now I use the FX3 with the Sony 24-105 F4 zoom 90% of the time. When I used the FX30, I had more lenses and needed to change lens frequently when I was limited by lower ISO. It's just a fantastic camera!
Had my ZV-E10 die (well, I accidentally killed it TBH) and was about to pull the trigger on an A7SIII or FX3. Alas...still going with the ZV-E10 for a bit longer, but the FX3 will happen eventually when I retire in the next year of so. You are gonna be more than thrilled with the performance and little compromises. Cheers.
Great video, did a good job with examples and putting things into perspective. I’m using a FX30 right now because I mainly shoot a podcast but I’m trying to learn a lil bit of film making.
A big perspective that I don’t think is touched on is how having the 12800 means you can keep your scenes very natural feeling without putting a bunch of big lighting setups in the room.
I have Sony a7iii had it for a few years now. Still my main camera for photography & video. & a lot of lenses I’ve gotten over time. It works great. Always comes down to lenses. That’s why I have not seen a reason to upgrade ever yet.
simple put it this way, if your up with a project that require low light, full frame (due to lenses), small camera 4k cinematic look, FX3 is the camera still in 2025 and after eventually FX3 mk2 comes along. The income itself on the job can justify an fx3.
The story is still WAY more important than what camera you're gonna use. If you shoot on a potato BUT the story is amazing you will get the attention and funding you want eventually (happened to me) . IMO Sony (and Red ) is great for making commercials, and documentaries while Blackmagic and Fuji and the older Alexas look better (to me) when projected on a screen/ Film Fests, etc., I've seen many short films shot on Sony or Red that must of looked amazing on the 5K monitor they used for editing but looks oversharp/overly-contrasty/overly-clean. I'm at that stage where I prefer to rent the camera sensor/codec combination that gets me the end result/look I want with the least amount of hassle.
Ya I definitely get what you mean. I think the intended outcome of where they content will be shown matters more than is talked about. I was just talking about how as much as 4k and beyond is great.. social media platforms are still in 1080 so it doesn't even really matter lol. Which cameras do you find yourself renting the most?
This is a great video. Thank you. I started my filming journey a couple of years ago. Of course started with my phone, then moved to a Sony ZV e10, then moved to a A6700. I loved that camera but hated the over heating issue that i ran into so i returned it. Finally landed on the A7C2 with my ZV E10 as my B cam. I also shoot alone 90%od the time. My comtemplations are when it comes to glass, Sony is making great lightweight lenses. I film alone as well, should i go for the lighter lenses like the 24-50f2.8 g or spend the money and add the weight for the 24-70gm 2. Also, been thinking about lowlight proformance. Should i go with the FX3 or save some money and get the A7S3 or even the ZVE1? Waht are your thoughts if you don't mind answering?
So, I actually just bought the G Master ii 24-70 2.8 and then 2 months later they came out with the 28 -70 2 lol. At first I was annoyed but honestly I the extra width is helpful for me and I read that the new one is a bit heavier. But I think it depends on what you use it for. This lense I primarily use for YoutTube and other content. If I'm working on short films and more cinematic things I would just be reaching for my G Master prime lenses for more depth to field anyway so I don't rally mind. As far as the FX3 goes, maybe try to find a used one so you can also spend on some glass? I can only speak on my behalf but the FX3 has been a game changer for me and I think it's worth finding one. I think you may outgrow the others quickly and regret not just grabbing one since that happened to me. Starting with that and the the g master 24-70 should be more than enough for an excellent setup. Just my opinion based on my experience but each of the cameras you mentioned are great as well if it's just for youtube.
I bought a Sony ZV1 when it came out 4-5 years ago. The little ultimate camera for vloggers. Now there's a ZV1 II. Still don't know how to use mine really. The only vlog i did was from my android 🤦♀️
That was actually my very first camera before the A7IV. Definitely important to start small and make sure it’ll get its use so at least you didn’t jump ahead a few cameras 😅
I am sure fx3 is a wonderful camera but to me a 4k camera without open gate is not enough in 2025. 6k and open gate is what i want. The outdated specs this sony offers would be ok if this camera was 2000.it is much too expensive for what it is.
I also wish it had open gate. For this reason I have been intrigued by the Panasonic S5iix (even as a Sony fx3 owner myself). However the grass is always greener… I don’t think open gate is a need for me right now, I don’t need the flexibility of opengate for vertical social media (though it would be nice), and I have never shot anamorphic. I think dynamic range, good low light, and IQ are more essential for me rn. (This could change). I also think (besides open gate), the fx3 will be sufficient for me (and many) for the next 3-5 years. There’s no perfect camera, but it all depends on your needs at the current moment. I suppose that’s why gear is often rented in the industry
My brain says «get the FX3», my wallet is crying and says «get the A6700» … but since I ain’t got the money for either of those I’m just gonna keep filming with my iPhone and see what happens to my channel in 2025 ;)
Creating is creating. I used my phone only for a few years of content creating. You’ll know when the time is right to move up 👌
@ For sure :) Just longing for the day I won’t have to stop recording and dismount the «camera» to answer a call or message a client ;)

That's a great camera as well so it makes sense to stretch it out if not absolutely necessary to change to something else.

100%! That coupled with a ND filter to tone it down has been a game changer for me.
Why not A7Siii?
Do you always shoot in Log?
I only use it for video and in cine ei at all times so that plus other reasons it just makes more sense for me.
When did you buy it? 2025 is a few hours young.
Gotta change the title to “for 2025” lol
