Good afternoon Professor Abramson. I follow your splendid lessons (and the jokes too) and have been a subscriber to your channel for years. It is a pleasure and an honor to have you in my country - I am Portuguese - and I believe I had Jewish ancestors in Beira, in the center of Portugal. Welcome and a pleasant and fruitful stay.
I grew up Hasidic. I’m no longer frum. Your lectures and videos in general have helped me form a much deeper understanding of my yiddishkeit beyond the orthodoxy. I appreciate you and your work very much! Thank you rabbi!
Shalom Rabi Abramson. In 2017/18 i commented one of your lectures on youtube. My ancestors came from one village about 20 km from Lamego called Leomil/Semitela also known as the jewish village till today. Our ancestor familiy home very ancient made of stones had some hebrew inscriptions, some i could translate and one of them was " Rav Yigal". I am very emotional to see you so near to the place that i come from. I have watched and learned so much from you. God Bless you very much.

2:57 That crucifix is labelled "Our Lord of Mercy". Mercy = Misericórdia, and Misericórdia is also the name of a system of charity in Portugal, that tend the sick, the poor, the needed. Historical records show that many "New Christians" were members of Misericórdias. Some say that was to better pass as Christians, while others say that was the case because charitable acts was the most Jewish-like think they could find in Christianity. In any case, Misericórdias are frequently found in previously Jewish places.
My guess is that plaque on the structure (Synagogue) probably predates 100 year’s so that the Xn’s could argue that the building was built for their use and never belonged or was paid for with Jewish money. What the tour guides should have is a well researched historical fact along with reputable and credible sources about the two Jewish communities which the guides label the “old” & “new” Jewish area’s. Once we can establish those structures belong to Jewish people, we can go back to sell what was stolen and donate the money to Eretz Yisroel (perhaps a generous donation to World Jewish Congress for their part in service to world Jewry). Thank you for sharing Dr. Abramson. BeGebenched.
I need to make a correction. Those stonemason signs are from the 13/14 century, and, at that time there were no new Christians in Portugal, or in Spain, for that matter. Jews, at that time were treated by the kings of Portugal as "my Jews". If you want to know more about the Stonemason's marks, be sure to look at Mario Barroca's works on that matter. He his the most renowned specialist in Northern Portugal.
