    Love to see old warbirds still in flying condition. The Corsair is a favorite, probably from watching reruns of Black Sheep Squadron on Saturday afternoons in my early teens.

    My old Mack truck started like that when it was really cold out. one, two, three cylinders would fire, then it would pop along for a bit blowing smoke rings out the stack, then 4 would catch with a few puffs of smoke and a few more smoke rings, then 5 would fire, more smoke, more rings, then finally all 6 would be firing. The Corsair just has 12 more jugs to fire off! :)

    Whether race cars or fighter planes, high performance piston engines always start up the same way - like they're dragons that have been sleeping for centuries and they're really pissed off that you've disturbed their slumber.

      Amazing isn't it, how that "lumpy idle" always gets your attention. Think about that the next time you hear an old harley. The engine design is similar.

      Even when they were new starting a radial engine is quite a process, after sitting just overnight one of the spark plugs in the bottom most cylinder had to be removed and the engine run through because oil would drain into that cylinder and if you tried to start it without draining the oil out they would hydraulic lock and bend the connecting rod, that's a good way to trash one of those engines, that's one of the reasons that you see the bomber crews running the engines through manually in the footage from WW2 by turning the props through by hand before a mission, you couldn't just jump in one of those things and stick the key in the ignition and start it up like a car, starting one of those engines was a process, x4 with a bomber.
      That's also the reason that those engines smoke real good at first when they're started, the lower cylinders on the engines would have at least some oil drain into them after the last time they were shut down, even when brand new, any aircraft that had radial engines and were on alert status would have to have the ground crews start them up every so often throughout the day so in case they had to "scramble" they didn't have to go through the process of draining the oil out of the bottom most cylinder.

    • @donmunro144
      @donmunro144 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dukecraig2402 that makes sense. I wondered how they control the oil system. Not like they have a oil pan on the bottom to drain into. Would really like to get some hands on time on these engines. Love these planes.

      @dukecraig2402 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@donmunro144
      They're dry sump systems like a Harley, the engine has two oil pumps, one draws oil from the oil tank and circulates it through the engine and the other one's a return pump that scavenges it out of the engine and pumps it back to the tank.
      A lot of these planes in this day and age have electric solenoids that close a valve in the oil feed line from the tank and an electric pump to return drained oil in the crankcase after the engines shut down, that way they don't have to worry so much about damaging a museum piece, all the surplus parts for those engines are drying up and they have to be careful that they don't damage thing's because someone makes a mistake.

    • @dbaecht
      @dbaecht 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're both correct. The engine needed the larger prop, it was 13 feet 9 inches if I remember correctly. The Navy required the short landing gear for carrier landings and the only way to accomplish that was the gull wings.

    • @johnosbourn4312
      @johnosbourn4312 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Dash1s from Vought, Goodyear, and Brewster, all have a 3 Bladed Prop. The 4 Bladed Prop was first introduced on the XF4U-3 high altitude interceptor version, but, when that version was cancelled by the Navy, the next production model with the 4 Bladed Prop, is the Dash 4, however, by the time the Dash 4 went into production, the planned Goodyear equivalent; the FG-4, was canceled, plus, the Brewster Aeronautical Company was forced by the Navy to shut down, and cease all aircraft production, which lead the company to die.

    • @johnosbourn4312
      @johnosbourn4312 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @ferrari2k
      @ferrari2k 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It is because of the framerate, as BluLynx already said.
      Imagine this was recorded with 25fps. Then you will have 1500 pictures per minute.
      And now imagine that the propeller is idling at about 1500rpm. So the camera takes a picture every time, when the propeller is at the same position. If the propeller speed is slightly different from the camera framerate, then you see it turning slowly, because the propeller is a few centimeters away from when the camera took its last picture.
      If you look at it in real life your eye is able of a much higher framerate, which makes the propeller look like spinning continuously, which it is, of course :)
