This is one of my favorite Jazz movies! I'm glad to see the Japanese do an excellent portrayal of Jazz musicians. And also a great movie of normal everyday girls who overcome their obstacles and make music. Such a great film!
I love all these girls and it seems like I know them. I have the DVD and they bring great joy to us and we appreciate your hard work and thank you all.
Thank you for posting these videos. I am American and love this music. Those girls are amazing. I am sure all of Japan is proud of them. They are wonderful !
Exceptionally delightful, touching, and enjoyable 2004 film co-written and directed by Shinobu Yaguchi.....these girls did play the instruments, and had nothing but the ususual exposure to music as students growing up who took piano lessons, etc. Of course, being a film, there was plenty of chance to fix any errors in the live performance, but this was not a group of professional musicians by any means. Creativity, Love and Exuberance equals solid win.
Wow, if people want to mention their favorite actresses in this movie, Yuika Motokariya is seldom mentioned. I'm glad you did. Honestly, my favorite is Shihori Kanjiya (I have a crush on her). But almost every main character has a loveable characteristic. Tomoko's lightheartedness. Yoshie's lovestruck and vanity. Naomi's dry humour. Kaori's ever optimism. Nakamura's strength of character. Not to mention the punk girl's interest to try jazz too. Simply a great movie. I wish to see them in person.
Very impressive, especially when you know they played all songs in the movie by themselves! Okay, they practiced ~5 months, but still very very good...I'm currently going to school in japan and japanese seem to be so talented in may things! I like this movie, I got new faith for practicing on my own instrument trough this.
I visited Japan in '68; was super impressed. My favorite city was by far Kyoto. I was treated like a rock star or movie star and of course I was not. Honesty was the rule of the day then and I hope now. They worked hard and played hard. They will do anything for a friend or just to help a person in need of help. I found a girl I liked in Kyoto and wanted to go back but lost here photos and cannot remember the spelling of here name. I have dreamed about her for over 40 years. Go "SWING GIRLS!"
The Japanese have taken the best of American culture to heart and, to their credit, ignored the rest. Swing music is one of our best cultural innovations. When the rock-n-roll Fifities and Sixties rolled in and jazz was side-lined, jazz performers like Anita O'Day found eager audiences in Japan.
That's interesting to know. I think I also read about this somewhere as well. I love the fact that the director wanted the girls' success to carry to the audience. That is fantastic. I would love to see one of their live performances.
@ingraleat - Excellent point Ingraleat. I remember reading about that too. It just makes the film even more beautiful. I'd love to see them play it live.
I think they're actually playing, I watched it in my Japanese class and I think my teacher said that they were actually playing. Lots of hot asian chicks in that jazz band :D
I'm happy to learn that the girls shown in the movie are actually players of their instruments. But in popular music movies/videos, the sound track is seldom produced as it is enacted by the actors. I readily believe that Ueno Jyuri can play, and in fact DID play what we hear. But, as a saxophonist myself (musicians notice these things) she is not fingering in synchronization with what we hear. She is "lip-synching" her own solo (which was recorded earlier.) There is no shame in that.
@RadioOperator01 - Have you watched this movie? You stated that you bumped into this while listening to the original "sing sing sing" by Benny Goodman. I mentioned that this is a good Swing/Jazz film because it was made by a Japanese director & they do a pretty good portrayal. Also since international films are never given respect & are ALWAYS over looked (in the USA), I think it's a GOOD THING to mention this film & being a respectable entry into Jazz filmography
Ueno is playing Tenor. Tenors have that curve on the bocal type thing (bassoon thing, but....) Alto do not have the bend. And bari's are the weird curvey ones.
@JazzyZenBrotha Actually Sing Sing Sing was mostly Swing and then jazz. Most favourite just before WW2 to the swing kids. If I had to choose between an awesome fim that would be.....the swing kids xD. Now that's one interesting film!
in the credits it says alto sax... I maybe wrong.. it's been a while since I've seen this movie but I kinda wanted to know who acts for the girl who plays the sax. In credits they don't use the name of the person in the movie but use the name of the instrument that they play ;)
@libertasdon If Swing is not Jazz, then what form of music is it? Just as Bop is Jazz, Fusion is Jazz, Dixieland is Jazz, Swing is a (very important) aspect of Jazz. Jazz is Life - and just as varied.
Professional musicians do this all the time. Many of you have heard of Chris Botti-- a popular American trumpet player. On his DVD "Chris Botti and Friends Night Sessions: Live in Concert" it is obvious that Botti does the same thing. In several places he breathes while we still hear trumpet sound. Once we see him take the horn off his lips... while we still hear trumpet. It's just a reality that film production sometimes requires this pantomime for visual reasons.
@JazzyZenBrotha Might I add on, @benjamintrb, that the entire cast had almost no musical background when they started filming the movie. They took six months of practise, training and pure hard work to make this movie a hit success. After which they even went on tour to play their music live. Thumbs up for the Japanese :)
This is one of my favorite Jazz movies! I'm glad to see the Japanese do an excellent portrayal of Jazz musicians. And also a great movie of normal everyday girls who overcome their obstacles and make music. Such a great film!
this has become one of my favorite movies very talented
I love all these girls and it seems like I know them. I have the DVD and they bring great joy to us and we appreciate your hard work and thank you all.

Without hesitation I love you all, such great expression with the instruments.
Their has Never been a more talented Swing Band outside America!
Man, if these girls are playing for real, they're the best big band going right now!! Not only are they talented, they're beautiful.
WOW, these kids are not only very pretty but their music is great. Love the twirling of the trumpets.
I love the guy who plays the sensei on this movie! He also played the role of the trainer in Waterboys. Great movie Swing Girls
Tenor saxophones are amazing! I happen to play one myself. I wanna watch this movie so bad!
"sing, sing, sing" is my third favorite swing. "In the mood" is my second and "A train" is the coolest of them all.
awesome. i have always loved this song.
Louis Prima would be PROUD. He wrote the song Sing, Sing , Sing which is played here in 1936 in America. The girls did a great job. ;)

Really great! This is the first time I've ever heard of this film,
but I'm sure it won't be the last.
OMG, I am so impressed... Now I like the movie even more.

I love this movie ! Haha ! It really made me know more about music around the world. Let's Swing ! Haha :D
High B♭
can't get enough of this movie!
Love these girls!!!!! Just Awesome.....

The great thing is, all the girls in the band, learned to play their instruments!
14 people don't appreciate how good these women are.

@vonKyle777
The number is not an example of jazz. It Is swing -- the most popular music form in American from approximately 1935 to 1955.
this is the best thing ever i played that trombone solo and she did like 1000 times better than i did
I think they're actually playing, I watched it in my Japanese class and I think my teacher said that they were actually playing. Lots of hot asian chicks in that jazz band :D

Piano : Yuta Hiraoka
Drums : Yukari Toyoshima
Guitar : Kana Sekine
Bass : Fumiko Mizuta
Saxophone : Juri Ueno (lead), Asuka, Chise Nakamura, Masae Nemoto, Madoka Matsuda
Trombone : Yuika Motokariya (lead), Eri Maehara, Natsuko Tatsumi, Natsuki Nakazawa
Trumpet : Shihori Kanjiya (lead), Nagisa Abe, Mutsumi Kanazaki, Misa Nagashima
The beginning of the trombone solo reminded me of "Ring, ring, ring, ring banana phone." =P
Outstanding WOW fantastic
It's probably a tenor Sax, right?
Does anyone know if Ueno Jyuri is playing a Tenor or Alto Sax? I can't tell.
Tenor
i like this movie very much!
I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!!!
@OsannaInExcelsis And they also have pretty good showmanship, too which is nice to see since the rarity of big bands kinda makes you miss it a lot
@JazzyZenBrotha Actually Sing Sing Sing was mostly Swing and then jazz. Most favourite just before WW2 to the swing kids. If I had to choose between an awesome fim that would be.....the swing kids xD. Now that's one interesting film!
lol i used to dislike music like this but because of this movie i started to like it XD

These girls are beyond the level of my highschool any day of the week
Luv the little mouse on the girls trumpet! Is that actually possible?
Watched this movie in my Japanese class yesterday. It was kinda fun, but most of the time it hurt my brain pretty bad.
in the credits it says alto sax...
I maybe wrong.. it's been a while since I've seen this movie but I kinda wanted to know who acts for the girl who plays the sax.
In credits they don't use the name of the person in the movie but use the name of the instrument that they play ;)
i love them all especially the trombonies!! cause i play trombone 2!!! yay!!
@libertasdon
