    For WAY off-grid campers out West with ZERO cell service, SL is revolutionary. A side benefit with that type of use are the speeds one enjoys with a wide open network - 300 mb is not uncommon. Suspending service ($0/mo) when not on-the-road makes it’s annual cost manageable.

      Yes, we traveled overseas earlier this year for 3 months, and just paused our billing while we were gone. Paying $0/month for a while really drops the cost per month average.

    Hi Sean and Kristi, how timely. We watched your video last night courtesy of our Starlink RV. We are camping in the mountains of Idaho with no services no hookups and love our Starlink. Make several VOIP calls to check on parents and FaceTimed with grandkids. Met you both at Gros Ventre campground two years ago. Safe travels!

    Interesting product for sure. One of the reasons I love camping so much mind you is to get away. Quite happy to be off in a quiet spot with no phone or internet or anything but the trailer, my wife, a bottle of wine or two, some good hiking or biking near by and of course a few good books as well. I realize for some it apparently is quite necessary to be constantly connected, but for some of us the disconnected life works beautifully. As always, safe travels....

    The wife and I have had one for about a year now. We are on the roam package. It is for us truly a game changer. We live and camp in the west, most of the time far from a cell tower. While not perfect, it is the only real option we have. As long as we have north west clear patch of sky, we have service. We average about 60 megs up and 15 down, but have had as high as 150 up. The biggest con so far is two price increases since signing up. Hope they are done with that for a while.

    I used Starlink right after Christmas last year while at Cattail Cove SP outside of Lake Havasu City. We got lucky with our site and I was able to work with almost zero issues for four days. Will be doing the same this summer, working while we’re in MT and WY. I’m happy with the performance and overall reliability so far. Thank for the video!

    I have a similar set up and get good coverage in remote locations. One thing to note is that when Starlink says you need a clear line of site to the sky, that includes not having any plants in the way. If you have vegetation the way, you can have a severe loss of signal if the satellite moves behind it. I use both the stand which comes with the Starlink or the pipe adapter and a section of chain link fence top rail in order to get the clearest view to the sky.

  • @StephSH

    We got ours last April, just before the RV plan became available, so we had to play games with the “service address” in order to get it, but we converted it to the RV plan when they started allowing that. Now you can order the RV package and they won’t waitlist you. Being in Ohio, we’ve had mixed results on speed- it was never meant to be the best internet source in populated areas, and we knew that when we ordered it. It’s definitely been useful in situations where we didn’t have cell service. Thanks for reviewing Starlink without hating on Elon, lol, he might be crazy, but he’s doing some interesting things.

    After all the TH-cam install videos. I fixed Star Link! Drill this cut that, bypass this neuter that ,throw away this rebuild that, remount it redesign it get a better router keep the old original router! And here you come out like the common person. Take it out of the box, plug it in the side of the Airstream set the router down, get out the app and make it work. Storage bins! protective covers -Ha Yours rides in the back of the cab. Outstanding Video Sean. Keeping it simple and real. Thanks!

      Ha! A few viewers have criticized that rat's nest of cable I've been schlepping around. But as you have wisely surmised, this is all part of a carefully orchestrated strategy (not AT ALL due to laziness on my part) to identify with the common person. One of these days we will figure out a better way to handle it, but for now we are keeping it sloppy, I mean, real! 😂

    I have the mobility package, and the “dishie” is installed on the roof of my Airstream. It is a little weird to install a tilted dish on a curved roof, but I have never had less than 5 fan “bars” since I had it installed in January-no matter where I parked it.
    I did have a guy in a very tall rv come to me in a panic at a rest stop and claim that “something was falling off my roof” because it looked crooked to them. Nah, that’s just how she sits. Love this service.

    Also had SL for a year. Great product! Stream TV channels, surf net and provides phone service. Maybe a little pricey but We are in our 70s, it a necessity! 12 gal Husky storage bin will solve your storage problem, and Flag Pole Buddy will make set up simple. I mounted router inside RV plugged into an inverter powered outlet. Then I prewired trailer using provided SL cable. I Used a weather proof RJ45 connector jack to plug in antenna. Yes this means cutting the SL cable but once you install RJ45 fittings on the ends You can now carry an extra 50ft of CAT 5 shielded cable in case you need to move the antenna away from trailer to get clear view of sky.

    Good Info.& video. We've had ours for about 1 year. Happy with the way it works. We use it when needed in remote areas without good cell coverage. Lesson I learned was to make sure if going to remote location, activate the service before you become remote. You need to connect to their app via wifi or cell phone service to activate service. I had to leave campsite until I got cell coverage so I could activate my service (dummy me, but not again).

    For those of us working full time remote from our rigs (four years for us) Starlink has been an interesting ride in the 20 months we've owned it. It's far slower than our TMobile 5g in our Peplink setup and quite expensive now. Even more important for our work over zoom is latency, something Starlink struggles with currently (typically over 120ms average.)
    If the capacity of the constellation catches up with the user level it could be like the old days when we first got it. In some cities and states it's slower than dial up or campground wifi and tree cover is a no go.

    We use Cordpro CP-100 to store cable. It is the best and cheapest (under $10) option we have found. We also use the ethernet adapter to our own separate router to cut down on the plugging-unplugging to the Starlink router and reduce the setup steps. Out west, it is often our only option even though we have devices for AT&T, Verizon and T-mobile cellular.

    We got "residential" SL about two years ago, back when the equipment cost $500. Living rurally where internet options are limited, it has been fantastic. The one negative is that the features/options of the various types of SL accounts, seem to change frequently. At first we could finagle portability. Then we couldn't. Then (for an extra $25/month) we had portability again. Then they took it away (unless you were grandfathered in). Now (we think) we have it back (for an extra $30/month). Or .... they were going to start throttling. Wait, changed their minds and no throttling. And the terminology changes -- RV to Roam to Mobile. It can be very confusing and keeps us on our toes. But all in all, we love SL.

    Sean, when pausing the roam plan, it has to be done before your next billing date, at least 2wks before the billing date. So if your billing is on the 15th, and you want it paused the subscription on June 15th, you have to actually pause it online by June 1st. Otherwise it won't pause the billing until July 15th, the next billing cycle. BTW, they don't have customer service by phone, which is one gripe I have.

    I'm pleased we are grandfathered in on the "portability" package where we can simply move around the country and not mess with anything. I see you plug your power in outside. Do you tuck your router into a bay? We've been bringing our antenna line in through a window and deftly sealing the small opening with painters tape, but the router is powerful and would probably do fine broadcasting from a bay in our motorhome.

    • @LongLongHoneymoon
      @LongLongHoneymoon  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We have been operating our unit in a pretty sloppy fashion, leaving everything outside. This year I’m going to figure out a more optimal way to position the unit. I’d like to have a pole that we can attach to the tongue of our trailer. Our AC outlet is located on the entrance side of our trailer, so that is an issue unless we were to somehow route the cable through the trailer wall and/or window. I haven’t done a lot of research, but I am sure that some enterprising airstream owners have figured out an elegant solution. I will make a new video about the topic once we decide and execute a better strategy.

      The issue is they've outpaced the constellation expansion by overselling kits, namely to RVers like myself. 20 months ago when we first got Starlink the speeds were, no pun intended, astronomical. They are now, based on location, incredibly poor with high latency and monthly outages. Its a very promising tech that will have growing pains.

    • @davidtotten3042
      @davidtotten3042 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Our regular dish averages about 80 watts when active, much more if snow melt is turned on. The dish automatically turns on snow melt when it gets cold enough, so we turn it off in the app, unless we are somewhere that we have shore power. We use the router for area networking even when we aren’t using internet, so we put it in standby (in standby the router stays active but the dish doesn’t) . On standby power we draw about 25 watts. When we go to bed we shut down completely. As we use solar most of the time, we have to be careful with use times. It would be best for us to add 200 watts of solar and another 100 amp battery, and will probably do that next year.

    • @danmurphy1742
      @danmurphy1742 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Watts is a measurement of power usage without regard for time. Watt/hours or Kw/hours are examples where time is considered. For example if the dish consumes 100 watts of power it would consume 100watt/hours if powered on for an hour or 1Kw/hour if on for 10 hours. In your house you pay for electricity by the Kw/hour.
      I just got a dish. I have a 1500 watt inverter in the RV. So it is much more than adequate if all I am powering is the dish.
      Regarding leaving the dish on or the inverter on but dish off it depends on your battery size assuming you are not plugged in at a camp site.
      For simple math calculations, if you have a 100% efficient inverter and the dish takes 100 watts, then that translates to 7.5 amp/hours (100watts/13.4 volts) from your lithium battery. If you have 100amp/hours of lithium battery then the battery would last for about 13 hours(100Ah/7.5ah). If you have lead acid then some number less than say 6 hours.
      My inverter takes less than 1 amp when in standby so add an amp to the above calculations.

If you use you dish outside of your home country for longer than two consecutive months Starlink may require you to move your service address to the country you are using it in. Very conflicted about Starlink. It certainly is great for increased connectivity in remote locations. But at what cost? The company plans to put 40,000 satellites in the sky, contributing to light pollution and creating a major problems for astronomers. Seems counterproductive. Let's get off the grid in the great outdoors with great skies. Oops. No...just getting to watch Starlink satellites racing around the sky.

      This is an interesting point of view. I'll never forget the first time we saw the Starlink "satellite train" crossing the sky. As an avid amateur astrophotographer, I can see why this would cause issues for my hobby. On the other hand, Starlink is about more than allowing Americans to play videogames and watch movies. It serves 53 countries around the world. For example, Starlink has allowed remote islands in the Philippines to have Internet access for the first time. This has been true in the Amazon rainforest as well. Starlink will be instrumental in providing Internet connectivity to many unserved populations around the world. This is going to improve the lives of tens (hundreds?) of millions of people around the world through better access to information, educational services, and device connectivity.

      I would certainly be concerned in many urban areas! In the more remote camping areas I'm not as worried simply because most people are leaving their entire camping set up (grill, lounge chairs, fire pits, etc.) unattended and a starlink just sort of blends in with your other stuff. I think putting the starlink on one of the extension poles would help in the urban areas, or anywhere that you would be concerned with theft.
