Thank you for explaining the principles of sound so clearly. After watching this I have tried out your method out of the box and am delighted at the improvement it made.

Great information. I totally agree that the speaker out of the box is far superior in sound.

This is superb for learning basic sound principles and for people who are diesel enthusiasts. As far as sound in diesels goes this video works very well - what about steam where we don't have the physical sizes to work with like diesels have to prevent sound bleed?

This makes perfect sense form a physics point of view. Ever try to breath into a bottle? Much harder than breathing into open air. The speaker has to compress/expand the air in the box, thus reducing it's efficiency and reducing/distorting the sound coming out of the other side. Now if you could make the box infinite in size, no difference. The bigger the box, the better.

Great info. I have a new scaletrains diesel I just got today and the bell volume is too low. I will have to experiment with the speaker. Thank you.

I liked out of the box much better, can I use that in American Flyer S gauge?

    Bruce, interesting.
When you put the test speaker "in the box" did you seal up the four mounting holes in the box to stop the rear sound escaping ?

8 years later still very useful to let a German diesel sound like a German diesel instead of a Windows 3.11 computer game.

Wrong.it does matters how u mount the speakers. Like car audio. On bass speaker facing Torres the back of the trunk. The sound bounches off the trunk deck and makes the sound bass deeper and louder. = Backfiring ..That's why model train manufacturer mount the speakers at the belly facing down to the tracks. The sound bounches off the track becomes louder deeper. Also help to box's in the speakers for extra loudness deeper sounds.

Watch it again and turn your audio on. If not, buy better hearing aids.

@@jpsholland lol..your the one who needs a hearing aid...it does matter where u mount the speaker...most manufacturer mounts them in the belly/ fuel tanks speaker facing down...this affect is called back firing..that technique works by bouncing the sound off the track bed at short distance which makes it louder...just like a box 12+ bass speaker pointed towards the back of the trunk of a car.. sound bounces off and become more louder....
