    It's honestly frustrating to see how many people are brushing this off as just "a shitty version of the broadway show". This may surprise you, but you can't renovate a theater for a two week production like you can a year-long residency, nor can you have sets as big in a touring production than you can a stationary one.
    The story's still there with almost no alterations, the music's still as good as it was, and the performances are fantastic, and while the sets are smaller, they still have all the style of the original. That's what matters in a musical, not minor, few-second details. So instead of moaning about how "It's not as good as broadway, the musical theater capital of the world", how about we just celebrate the fact that this play is actually going out of it's way to be affordable and easily accessible, unlike 99% of broadway shows that only care about rich new yorkers?

      Hamilton tours with basically the full stage, the lion king tour was just as good the replacement pride rock would have not been out of place on broadway etc .... for lots of tours that is not the case ... they could have easily still have the house move forwards - have seen plenty of touring productions that use set pieces on wheels etc
      the set for the DEH tour was better than the broadway, they ended upgrading the broadway to match the tour!
      Aladdin, Chitty, and many more all tour with basically all their magic. The only expeditions should be big set pieces which rise out of the floor e.g. pride rock, the bedroom in Billy Elliot etc.... but really the theatres which accept tours should be set up for trapdoors as once we were kings looses some of its emotional ending if the head torches are not going down into the stage!

      @@matthewkelly9664 How would touring houses be set up for trap doors, though? Every single show is different in how it uses trap space, and some touring theaters just don't have the space below the stage to begin Hamilton is also a pretty simple set compared to a show like Beetlejuice in that it's a unit set that never moves or changes. It was also, unfortunately, probably an issue of Beetlejuice not being the most successful show financially. If it was a Hamilton-level success, maybe the tour would have been more elaborate.

      @@ComputerGeek1100 I'm going to go with the SpongeBob musical was not a huge financial success and it was filmed on tour, the tour set looked very broadway, they had the full front of house dressed, the drop down area a the front of stage etc, Newsies was filmed on tour and had no missing elements based on what I could see .... even wicked tours the full show (Exception being the hat at the start only uses a trap door if the house has one) by building the stage inside the stage to get the full dragon clock effect

    • @ComputerGeek1100
      @ComputerGeek1100 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@matthewkelly9664 SpongeBob was not filmed on tour - they constructed a new set in a studio in the UK and sent most of the cast over there. The SpongeBob tour was a non-equity tour that only ran for 6 or so months because of COVID and I read multiple accounts (my tour stop was cancelled due to the pandemic) that the set looked fairly cheap. Newsies is also a very simple unit set compared with Beetlejuice's house set that was constructed to be almost exactly the same dimensions (width, at least) of the stage at the Winter Garden and Marquis. Wicked does not use a trap at all on tour anymore - the hat was cut a while ago and is a projection in all productions including Broadway. Also - for what it's worth, the Beetlejuice tour does construct the false proscenium in every theater, it's just not as elaborate as Wicked's. Even Wicked's tour set, while beautiful, is very scaled-down from Broadway, having seen both. It keeps the spirit and intent of the original while being smaller to travel.

    • @matthewkelly9664

      @@ComputerGeek1100 interesting ... I knew it was filmed in a theatre in Plymouth... I just assumed the brought back the broadway cast during one of the stops of the US tour ... in a town called Plymouth after the actual Plymouth....
      I wonder if the filming set is now the uk tour set?
      The 1st UK tour of wicked was very very close ... apart from it being a set within a set ... I saw the two within the same half year (good god I miss day seats) and apart form the dragon set up being over the actual proscenium arch to being inside it, and the hat not using trap doors (I think the cost of cutting the stage at welsh opera house is too high) the production was very very similar.
      For Beetlejuice they have said the house its its own character, given that it should be like Chitty, the tour should make sure that element is not sacrificed, or is impressive in its own way - think the difference between the west end Banks house v the tour storybook house - both impressive but one can tour and one lifts out of the stage, or flys in the entire attic, same goes for pride rock, one rises revolving out of the stage, one drive around the stage and twists itself into a spiral etc.
      Recently comparing what I saw to bootlegs, DEH seemed identical - Waitress looked very similar, they just traded automation for manual (but it was a simple set) and didn't make any huge difference to what you saw. Hamilton seemed identical, they even Brough the revolve. The last tour I saw of les mis was rather awful, but they then butchered the west end revival (its no longer the longest running west end musical as the got rid of
      Fiddler was rather awful but so was the broadway set as far a I can see so I think I just didn't like that design. I was disappointed very much by Anastasia as I really wanted to see the train interact with the projections - and they just had people moving suitcases around the stage. I get some changes like changing out solid wings to fabric, and swapping out the side revolves to be platforms that got pushed on and off.
      Frozen was also disappointed, the lack of the revolve was un expected ... I get the lack of the ice shooting up out of the revolve but they could still have found a way to get the Disney magic working. I get the revolve not having a lift. Comparing to west end, I get how you cannot tour a bridge that is 3 times wider than the stage (you have to love Theatre Royal, Drury Lane - such impressive wings!, but they could have flown in the mid section like on broadway instead of having the little toy bridge - I also get how they have to have the mini steps rather than the full size steps or integrating the dress magic into the floor for let it go, that change was fine as it didn't spoil the look if you get what I mean

      It’s so clear that the cast and crew behind the tour put so much love and hard work into this show and to call it low grade and low budget isn’t just disrespectful, it’s sad. I’ve seen the original broadway cast in NYC, and yes of course the original production is an absolutely gorgeous showstopper. But this cast and crew, with all the challenges that come with changing the show for a national tour, is phenomenal too. I sincerely don’t think anyone is throwing up their arms and refunding their ticket because the ceiling isn’t connected to the wall or because Delia’s dress doesn’t fall apart.
