Maybe my favorite California tsunami video of all time. The regression and then ascension of this wave is super impressive, and far more so than we can normally see on an exposed area of coastline like this one. Fantastic stuff!
I realize that was only an 8 foot surge, but the thought of standing right there raises the hair on the back of my neck, knowing the other side of that wave killed thousands in Japan.
Pyrus Rex yup! The Japanese had no idea what was coming at them. They have ... once again posted markers on hillsides.. to show how far up a Huge Tsunami can reach... but .. after a while the people will forget... yet again.
And yet the Sentinelese, isolated on a tiny island in the Andaman sea for sixty thousand years, who have not yet discovered fire, metallurgy, or agriculture, knew when the fault let loose in 2004 to run for the high part of the island, because the sea was coming. India sent a survey helicopter to see if any survived, and it was promptly greeted by a healthy hail of arrows from shore.
@@faithrada that's not exactly how it played out ... The reason so many got caught was because the coastline dropped about 3 feet, which hadn't been factored into the equation, combined with the sheer magnitude of a 9.1 earthquake, which, while it was known it could be possible, was definitely the extreme edge of what people were expecting. Imagine enduring a 6 minute 9.1 quake and then having 10-20 minutes to get to higher ground. Japan is more prepared for earthquakes and tsunamis than any other country.
I suppose if the surge had been a few feet higher you'd have been washed out to sea; but, since it wasn't and you weren't, thants for a fascinating and very educational video!
This is brilliant footage and it really shows why so many Japanese people were caught off guard… the crazy currents and the directions of the waves.. the people were watching for a wave coming in straight, but instead it came from sideways around the headland. Seeing the way these waves change direction when it’s just a small amount, compared to the 40 ft monsters the Japanese faced is quite amazing. This is probably the best footage and vantage point I’ve seen to date.
I'm surprised that there wasn't any "bad apples" who ventured into the water with a surf board or jet ski! Great video Alisha, videos like such are a great resource for preparing for future tsunami's and storm surges, it's vital for individuals to take note if along the coast line.
People always know that they are in absolutely NO danger right up until the point when they get nailed. No one EVER sees it coming. Having said that, adults can make their own decisions & we, the spectators, can entertain ourselves by talking tons of smack. Nice video. Questionable decision-making.
As scanning to the right the road goes along the water about 3ft higher. The water didn't go across the road. The initial warning was over and lots of people were out to check the damage. The cliff was Round 20 ft , so not so crazy as it looks.
Thanks for posting your video. It's helpful to see the mechanics of the tsunami--it's far more complex than a single "wave" coming in [surfers take note!]. Today we've seen that these surges can ebb and flow a number of times. The rocks that are "taller than I am" are a great reference.
There is pretty much always more than one surge. And generally the first one is NOT the worst. Often the 2nd wave is the worst, but it can also be later ones. Moral : wait until it's really over.
What will people on the East Coast do...when the landslide accompanies the Canary Island earthquake/volcano? I have heard numbers as low as 300 ft. and as high as 3000 ft. surge waves.
Great video, but seriously, this was a very dangerous place to be, and they weren't alone (4:13) there were a few people there. Imagine if that water kept coming a little more, you all would be a memory right now. People drown in that water all the time when there isn't a tsunami surge. Glad everyone is safe.
What makes this more amazing, it traveled thru the night from Japan. It damaged Depoe Bay, and Brookings Harbor in Oregon. Crescent City Harbor, and Santa Cruz Harbor in California. If anyone thinks this was a non-event, type those locations into the search boxes. You'll see some of these harbors were protected from storms, but this tsunami surge is a different animal, just keeps moving with its own turbulence & power!
This occurred during a LOW tide...... If it happened during a HIGH tide, the surge would have been much more damaging..... GREAT video...thanks! An 8 foot surge also was reported in Avila Beach Harbor......but no damage, due to occurrence at low tide....
Wow, that is probably 5 times the height of what was seen in Seaside. Excellent spot to cover it. Looks like you were standing a good 10 feet above the surf.
I don't mean to make light of the disaster in Japan or the damage in Hawaii or California but its mind boggling how the effects of an earthquake halfway around the world can be so far reaching.

There was a landslide in the Italian Alps in 1963 into a dammed up reservoir.. The earth had moved slowly for years and then failed - a huge piece of granite two kilometers long. The engineers were all up on the dam to "watch the 25meter" lake tsunami that the engineers had predicted. Only it was 200 meters and washed over the dam and destroyed the town below killing thousands including the miscalculating engineers watching on the dam. But like you say, it must have been "quite an adventure."
I was in Japan during this time. It was quite a bit different there, but I grew up in CEC area. I have seen storm surges push logs up over that stretch of road. If those waves had been higher or had hit during high tide, this video would be very different. The cow pasture behind you is fairly flat, and the rise in the road to your left is a little bit away. Going toward the airport would have been futile or deadly. But, truth be told, that is probably where I would have gone too or the harbor...
CC seems easily affected by tsunamis triggered in South America and Asia. When the Cascadia quake hits right off coast CC is in for some very serious trouble.
Yep. I remember watching a documentary piece about the 64 tsunami following the Good Friday quake in Alaska. I think three people were killed when the third and biggest wave hit.
Man, I know this wasn't nearly as bad as what hit Japan, but you can definitely tell how powerful those waves were. How high up above the water were you guys?
This occurs from a 7 plus quake here in Alaska. I was in the coastal fishing town of Petersburg, locals all got in their vehicles and headed to higher ground, we got no wave though.

No he did not because his Mother was beside him! No changes .Our winters are pretty much the same just surged in and out within minute and waves came from multiple angles. The cliff is 30 ft high.
@metafis I work for Sac city Fire dept and people that dont follow evac orders we have to go find there bodys and give them back to his/hers family that why I said that.
That's what I call "confused seas". The waves did not know which way to go, and that sound, kinda like the sound a tornado makes: you don't mistake it for anything else. If you want to see foolish people, watch all the toursits in Sumatra going out to look at how far out the see had gone: if I see that, I don't just go the other way, I RUN.
Stunning fascinating footage. Hysterical inane comments. I just love the contrast. These blokes are recording excellent film. But they haven't the thought or vocabulary to do it justice. "holy crap" "holy crap". It isn't that they're not David Attenborough, they aren't even my 3 year old.
I don't think that the cameraman was an idiot... If he wanted to go see the predicted-8-ft-wave, knew the risks, and chose to go where he knew he had a decent (15ft by approximation from the waterline) height to video from, then let him do it and just watch in awe at his video. Like pp said, we all clicked on the link to see the footage. Where was he supposed to take it from: inland? a cliff? would you have watched if he had?
@srhbca The problem is that 12' wouldn't be enough if you were in Japan. 100ft wouldn't be enough. So the worry was that the waves generated by this earthquake would still contain enough energy behind them to wash out the bluff. Fortunately the energy was greatly dispersed as it travelled through the ocean. Just wait for the Juan De Fuca to slide, it's a Megathrust 9.0+ magnitude producing fault along the Oregon coastline.
I was in Lincoln City sleeping a few feet from the beach when the Tsunami Alarm sounded... and woke up and was in the car and I drove half way to Salem, In like 15 min...haha..a bit over cautious I guess.
alotsa monetarieo No.. never can be over cautious... far too many in Japan forgot their own history... and paid for it with their lives. Always err on the side of caution.
Are these people a being unsafe, yes to an extent but if you know the area they are at it is 8-10 feet down to the water. Could they have got swept out to sea yeah but they were a lot safer than most of you are thinking.
There were a lot of lucky people on the Crescent City shoreline that day, through no merit of their own. These people are standing WAY too close to the water in a tsunami generated from a magnitude 9 quake in Japan and reaching the beach of a town that has often suffered tsunami damage and death, including the 1964 Good Friday Quake in Prince William Sound.
The time/date difference between Japan & US west coast must be throwing me off. It must have been THURSDAY night (March 10th on the west coast of US) when I saw it on TV, live, around 10 PM). Japan was already into friday afternoon, 3-11. That must be it.
Always be aware of what caused the tsunami, like how big was the quake, if its a landslide from land or under the ocean you may want to run for your lives, in 1950s a tsunami wave cleared the tree line at around 524m, yes 524m......... Geologists and hydrologists had to re-evaluate how high waves could get when this happened. If its an asteroid impact also run for your lives...
These were great pictures. I only wish that with so many people with cameras now, they would learn how to take pictures. This had way too much camera movement. You just can't wave your camera around.
@2004armywifey I know the area, it's maybe 10 feet down to the water at high tide there. But before the waves hit, nobody knew how big they would be. They could have been anywhere from 4 feet to 15 feet. So considering most places evacuated were at a higher elevation than this, these people weren't too smart to stand here. They're just lucky that the highest waves ended up being around 8 feet.
The actual earthquake and subsequent tsunami in Japan did not occur until around 4 PM (approx) Japan time, friday afternoon, 3-11-11. I recall watching it LIVE around 10 pm or so, California time, that night. If the wave in this video happened *earlier in the day* on that friday (3-11-11) as you say, then it can't be a tsunami from the Japan quake, can it? That's all I'm saying. I like the vid tho', regardless. :)
I watch the videos of the tsunami that hit japan and speed in which it arrived onshore, and my greatest fear is if a earthquake hits new fault found off of long beach in southern ca ; how much time would people have to leave the area.
Some good video but I wish people would learn to video with a little less speed. You waver back and forth that makes a person dizzy trying to see something. Take a few seconds at each level. My daughter and her husband were living in Crescent City at this time. They were working so could not get down to the beach to watch.

It is quite obvious that some of you don't know what is dangerous or not. I lived there for many years and where they were is not dangerous. Great viedo so lay off.

My wrong, however we did get a big quake here in Alaska in 2011, thought it was the same one. Similar topic though the great 1964 quake in Alaska, second largest ever recorded killed not only Alaskans from the huge tsunami but people in Oregon, Hawaii anc crescent city California were killed by the tsunami! Talk about a long distance! By the way that quake registered 9.2 and lasted approx “4 minutes”, imagine that!
@darkangelkitty13 Yeah we know how high the waves were...AFTER they hit. Nobody knew they were going to be 8 foot waves, so I think it's pretty damn stupid to be standing on this overlook when it's only about 15 feet above the water at high tide, don't you?
Imagine the fault line off the Oregon, Washington and B.C. coast were to snap, what you're seeing here would be exactly like what hit Japan, it wouldn't be an 8ft serge, the tsunami that hit Japan was recorded over 100ft tall in some locations and it even went down rivers all the way up into the mountains. The Pacific Oceanic plate is sliding under the U.S continental plate and the U.S. continental plates edge is being pulled back and down with the Pacific Oceanic plate and extreme forces are being built and when it gives, we will most likely see an earthquake of 9.0 or higher when the U.S. plate springs up like the Pacific Oceanic plate did near Japan exerting and displacing millions of gallons of water creating a tsunami equivalent to or greater then the one that hit Japan. Washington, Oregon, and British Colombia will be severely impacted by it. It's only a matter of time, not if, but when.
chris kinney 3 weeks ago Seems all 'as in' ages / go So does "Doc Holliday" goeth Or is it just whole new Tombstone "Imagine the fault line off the Oregon, Washington and B.C. coast were to snap, what you're seeing here would be exactly like what hit Japan, it wouldn't be an 8ft serge, the tsunami that hit Japan was recorded over 100ft tall in some locations and it even went down rivers all the way up into the mountains. We;; perhaps it may so happen so soon But then each and every day the earth moves
I feel like you're my doppelganger, Chris! lol Yes, when that plate slips (Juan de Fuco), it will not be good. It's better if it goes in spurts than in one single rip, right? A little less destructive?
Just a bit of a random point. The plate being subducted is the Juan De Fuca plate which is an ancient plate. The result is the same but I thought I'd point it out.
I know some of these comments are half joking and criticizing, but a guy did die yesterday trying to take pictures of the waves. Check The Daily Triplicate website. He got swept away at the mouth of the Klamath. Sad.
There were photographers in Japan standing in the middle of the tsunami, and even they were fine. These guys here are safe, the tsunami runup height isn't big enough to get them.
+Darkrai Yep. I believe it might be the same place where a collection of fools ran down to the beach to "see the tsunami" DECADES ago and got carried away to feed the fish. And if THIS wave were twice as high?? They are STILL no smarter today.
+Tacks Sherbo and people are no smarter today than on the one before. Could be nature's way of eliminating some of the dumber ones. Having seen the power of nature, I wouldn't go down there to watch the Tsunami come in. You never know for certain how high the surge is going to be and if you guess wrong, it's too late to get out.
Strangely this was more terrifying than some of the footage from Japan considering the distance from the quake site. Despite some of the judgemental tut-tutting there is nothing wrong with watching or recording these outrageous natural events. Please remember to DONATE through you local Red Cross or do whatever you can to help the international response to these awful disasters.
@godfreyih My partner and I just stayed in Crescent City in a beach rental, along the same bluff they are filming from. The road they are on, has houses all along it. If the houses, or these people were in danger; the Coast Guard would have evacuated along this very populated area. The road is a well traveled main route along the ocean. It would have been closed, and traffic would have to take the evacuation route if there was danger. Do some fact checking before you get so bent man. Great City

great video with the context of that rocky outcrop just off shore there. it really helps to put the event into some perspective.

The positive out of this was, we have the most beautiful new harbor on the coast!
Not as dramatic as the tsunbamis that hit Japan, but awe-inspiring just the same.
Well done, Alisha Markel!
+Peter Pachecos No such word as "tsunbamis". Unless that's your "Personal" word for a "Tsunami"?
@AuraHero This is a veiwpoint above Pebble Beach, about 10-15 ft above the water at high tide.
This occurred during a LOW tide......

Very cool. This must actually be 3-12-11 (the next morning), since the waves would take about 12 hrs or so to cross the Pacific from Japan.

This occurs from a 7 plus quake here in Alaska. I was in the coastal fishing town of Petersburg, locals all got in their vehicles and headed to higher ground, we got no wave though.
Bruh
WoW that is intense!! Your braver than I , I would not have stood there like that filming...
Even though the tsunami here was much smaller compared to what hit Japan, the chaotic sound of the ocean was a bit scary.
I've watched many videos of this tsunami in Japan; so glad this is all you had to put up with. I'd like to think you (all) have an escape route in place abd coordinated wuth your community so no one gets trapped on the road due to congestion... like close all roads coming and open all for leaving.

Actually, there are several sensors in the Pacific that will tell you almost exactly the size of tsunami that will come in, and when.
Stunning fascinating footage.
Hysterical inane comments.

Not at all. Reports of people in Japan not fleeing. Same as Indonesian tsunami.
Are these people a being unsafe, yes to an extent but if you know the area they are at it is 8-10 feet down to the water. Could they have got swept out to sea yeah but they were a lot safer than most of you are thinking.
@darkangelkitty13 If it wasn't dangerous why were 4 people swept out to sea and killed?
There were a lot of lucky people on the Crescent City shoreline that day, through no merit of their own. These people are standing WAY too close to the water in a tsunami generated from a magnitude 9 quake in Japan and reaching the beach of a town that has often suffered tsunami damage and death, including the 1964 Good Friday Quake in Prince William Sound.
The Tidal wave in 1964 was created by an earthquake in Alaska.
The time/date difference between Japan & US west coast must be throwing me off.
It must have been THURSDAY night (March 10th on the west coast of US) when I saw it on TV, live, around 10 PM). Japan was already into friday afternoon, 3-11.
That must be it.
@srhbca But nobody never knows what force a tsunami is gonna hit with, or how big it's gonna be befor it reaches land
Ya nadie habla del monstruoso trozo de casquete polar de varios kms, el cual se desprendió del polo Norte, ahí está.
Very few places in california are prone to thiis event happening this is one of those places guess its the direction it faces and geography
Great Vids keep em coming
:)
I watch the videos of the tsunami that hit japan and speed in which it arrived onshore, and my greatest fear is if a earthquake hits new fault found off of long beach in southern ca ; how much time would people have to leave the area.
we're strike-slip in so-cal, not really a tsunami engine.
Some good video but I wish people would learn to video with a little less speed. You waver back and forth that makes a person dizzy trying to see something. Take a few seconds at each level. My daughter and her husband were living in Crescent City at this time. They were working so could not get down to the beach to watch.
Kal m n ik bhens ka bayan suna wo kehrahe theee k log apni bachani k layi bayan daitai ha bhens tu kia ha our sub ko haqeqat k ap kia our hum koi chor nahe ha k bina sabot k koi kam kari our londio k plain fail q k ab faraq nahe parta wisai b hamri dil ka kam khatam sub khuch phenk dia ab jo karna karo
@teamdeadly awwwwwwwwwww .. were you scared for them??
To think how far away from the epicentre you were is insane
Wrong location. 16 boats sank in the harbor there. That was the place to shoot footage. Memo for next time.
So then Crescent City had another Tidal wave.Because they also had one in 1964.I know because I an my family lived there at that time.
No, this did happen on the morning of 3-11-11.. School was cancelled and the town was evacuated around 5 am PST. Just saying :)
did you fun?
It is quite obvious that some of you don't know what is dangerous or not. I lived there for many years and where they were is not dangerous. Great viedo so lay off.
RIP People Of Japan. Peace to Survivors!
There's another video posted that shows from ebb tide to raging tsunami in less than five minutes. Be careful.
The video was taken with his itoothbrush.
That's a trip.....all the way from frickin' Japan......
"I could be down there running away from the wave right now" - 0:37.
I assume this guy soon saw that this was not really a funny joke.
12ft wasnt high enough for some people in Japan and other places affected.

The issue with many of these videos is lack of scale.
Thanks for risking your life for TH-cam enjoyment. Dang!
I use to jump of those rocks right there off into the water when I was a little kid we would also get tons of rock crab there
My wrong, however we did get a big quake here in Alaska in 2011, thought it was the same one. Similar topic though the great 1964 quake in Alaska, second largest ever recorded killed not only Alaskans from the huge tsunami but people in Oregon, Hawaii anc crescent city California were killed by the tsunami! Talk about a long distance! By the way that quake registered 9.2 and lasted approx “4 minutes”, imagine that!
at least they are not down there trying to surf it , I heard of a few people that did try.
@darkangelkitty13 Yeah we know how high the waves were...AFTER they hit. Nobody knew they were going to be 8 foot waves, so I think it's pretty damn stupid to be standing on this overlook when it's only about 15 feet above the water at high tide, don't you?
Good job you guys EXCELLENT!!

Seems all 'as in' ages /

So does "Doc Holliday" goeth
Or is it just whole new Tombstone

We;; perhaps it may so happen so soon
But then each and every day the earth moves
I feel like you're my doppelganger, Chris! lol Yes, when that plate slips (Juan de Fuco), it will not be good. It's better if it goes in spurts than in one single rip, right? A little less destructive?
Exactly but either way there would be devastation, just not on such a massive scale.
Just a bit of a random point. The plate being subducted is the Juan De Fuca plate which is an ancient plate. The result is the same but I thought I'd point it out.
You say tomato, I say tomahto, you say potato, I say potathto... : D
this is not a tsunami....just small waves....
There's no force here on earth nore powerful than NATURE!!
@stephenjones102 AMAZING ISNT IT? and these folks are CRAZY!
Apparently not everyone watches TH-cam Tsunami videos...
It is so loud 🖖
crescent city...?
+Darkrai California
+TaurusReborn RBLX Thanks
+Darkrai Yep. I believe it might be the same place where a collection of fools ran down to the beach to "see the tsunami" DECADES ago and got carried away to feed the fish. And if THIS wave were twice as high?? They are STILL no smarter today.
+Tacks Sherbo and people are no smarter today than on the one before. Could be nature's way of eliminating some of the dumber ones. Having seen the power of nature, I wouldn't go down there to watch the Tsunami come in. You never know for certain how high the surge is going to be and if you guess wrong, it's too late to get out.
Larry Elliot Common sense is becoming a lost art. Each succeeding generation seems to have less and less brain power.
A mic wind filter would be appreciated
Strangely this was more terrifying than some of the footage from Japan considering the distance from the quake site. Despite some of the judgemental tut-tutting there is nothing wrong with watching or recording these outrageous natural events.
Please remember to DONATE through you local Red Cross or do whatever you can to help the international response to these awful disasters.
They would have been toast in Japan this close to the shoreline.
clearly they are at 20 to 35 ft height
Great video. thx
This is a tsunami...!! 8 feet..🤔🤔🤔
Great City
@MommaOkie actually, there was only 1 death.
nice video
I was expecting to see an 8 ft surge, but I didn't. Clickbait.
Would have been a LOT more damaging if the wave hit the US west coast at high tide.....
