This match indeed shocked the world!!. Ma Long on this match outsmarted Wang Chuqin, changing his service to a reverse pendulum that was effective, using tactics to expose Wang's wide forehand, and being closer to the table so he can pull some Waldner blocks, which, after the 2nd game, caused Wang Chuqin to lose all his confidence. That is why Ma Long is the GOAT of modern table tennis!! as he can still beat world number 1 despite being out of his prime.
Yeah I think Ma Long came in with an unexpected and adapted game and really wanted the opening and following set even using a time out just in the first rather than saving it to break WQC confidence
I actually expected and predicted this outcome. I got flamed when I say Wang Chuqin is nowhere close to the prime Zhang Jike or Ma Long. Noobs here don't understand the game. I also correctly mentioned guys like Fan and Liang need to slim down to gain that speed edge around the table. They aren't gonna be as consistent in the long term.
Ma Long woke up this morning and decided to be an entirely different player. Backhand dominant, reverse pendulum serve, never opening with a forehand loop, playing from middle of the table. Amazing tactics and execution.
A Ma Long style change for the World Cup. Bringing his reverse pendulum as the go to serve and receiving serves with flicks rather that his usual close to the table touches. Also, his BH was so strong this game, probably the best I've ever seen of him.
I was trying to compare his BH to FZD, but FZD's backhands are simply so powerful that no one can return it. Ma Long's BH are jaw-droppingly accurate, especially the angles on some of these were mind-blowing!
And when he faced Lin Gaoyuan his reverse pendulum serve didn't work. So he changed to a BH serve that helped his comeback to 3 games down. His ability to adapt is unmatched. THat's why his the GOAT. And his BH, to my naked eyes, is stronger than FZG at this point.

Very good tactic from ML, targeting WCQ's wide forehand and the middle leaving WCQ only options to play inside out forehand from the middle or forehand down the line to break the pattern which are very risky shots. WCQ was unable to find the answer to that, plus ML looked faster and fitter today like a glimpse of his prime. This is really much the only time I've seen a 35 yrs old 4-0 the current World No.1. What a legend!
@@the100thtimelord2 He was definitely faster than he has been recently. Especially, if you look at the rally at 11-11 in the 4th game, ML was able to recover both the wide backhand and wide forehand. ML in the recent tournaments wouldn't be fast enough to get to those.
I've never seen Ma Long use his backhand so well. Even though it wasn't his best weapon, it was incredible. Extremely accurate. Ma Long no longer has the same physique as before, especially due to injuries, but he is a genius, which is why he is the GOAT. Always looking for the best quality in strikes

I was watching the live stream yesterday and I was surprised to see SO many cross court backhand shots from Ma. Almost looked like he never had problems with his backhand. This is who Ma Long is, he can dominate anyone

Ma Long is completely unrecognizable here, reverse pendulum serves and accurate backhand shots...he almost broke WCQ's knees three times with the angles of some some of those backhand shots. Incredible, i watch Ma Long playing since 2009. He was always strong in his style, but this time it's another level. It's like he's reviving the style of Zhang Jike from his memories.
I don't think he crumbled. He fought tenaciously till the end. The score was 12-14 last game. An example of crumbling is Harimoto who lost 1-11 in the last game.

Since when the Dragon won a match could be a big upset? Yes I know Wang has been a big star for awhile, but Ma Long was and still be a legend, he just won Olympic recently, he has lots of experience dealing with the next generation. Even 40 years old Timo boll could defeat Lin Shidong (who took down Fan) or Samsonov at his end of career could still upset Lin Gaoyuan, I think it's normal that at this moment Ma Long can still take down top players. Before this their record was 8-2 in favour of WQC and the last 6 matches Ma Long played against Wang resulted in his defeats including the World championship semifinal though I think most of them where close matches . Watched this LIVE yesterday and it was so shocking to see this in full. Ma Long's timeout in the 1st game, his backhand blocks to the wide forehand. Wang being affected mentally, struggling but just couldn't take this one crucial game. Seeing the summary one day later and it's way less impressive than LIVE, I will try to watch LIVE more often - it was so intense, almost got a heart attack. Everyone in LIVE chat was speechless, stunned, baffled and amazed by Ma Long's performance. I have never been more wrong and was 95% sure Wang will win and does not have weaknesses...... GOAT proved everyone wrong once again, as did Boll for that matter. Experience, flexibility and mindset is everything. the first thing i notice in this match is that Ma changes his receiving position to the middle of the table, which was never seen before. what a major adaption! i guess he really wants this one, and it serves the purpose. congrats!
Finally. This is the reality. This is the first time in the last few Macao finals where I've seen ML play his normal game. Previous matches he was letting WC hit through him and making many uncharacteristic unforced errors. Look at ML here. Very few unforced errors -look at 2:07 - plus annihalating WC on the wides. I still remember when I first time watched Ma Long’s game 14 years ago. At that time I thought this young man would certainly become the next big thing. He made it as I expected, but he lasted way longer than my prediction.
This game is key. Ma long is receiving backhand on the short forehand serve. He has now figured out how to beat WCQ, he will win the next olympic gold.
I think that ML has to be selected above WCQ and FZD to play singles in the Olympics though. If he gets selected, I have no doubt he'll take gold. I was never convinced that WCQ was Ma Long's "kryptonite". Whenever WCQ beat ML, he was not in "Dragon Mode":) Here, we see that even relaxed dragon mode can take down world #1.
WCQ is not that weak. The key of this game is ML was very comfortable, he said he didn’t expect to win but 1 or 2 game, that’s why he called timeout in the first set. WCQ now takes responsibility in 3 events. That show the coaches believe him. He has just reach the top for a few months, he didn’t experienced enough. But after this game, I believe that he get the biggest lesson of his career by far. The future is long, let the time answer how far he can go
ML has never played like this before showing he is different from anyone else. But this was the problem with WCQ. He was so confused during the match with the brother who he get used to for 10 years

Ma Long is really changing his playing style to more likely the energy saving yet effective technique. The experience sure have a big role in his style now. I see that ma long is a little bit dark without any noise of cho le.. he is calm and ruthless now. Just kill the ball without expression.

Few things that Ma Long do very differently in this match compared to his previous matches: 1) Using the reverse pendulum as his default serve. Its very to see Ma Long use a reverse pendulum serve. He usually only use it when he's losing and can't find a way to defeat his opponent. But in this match, almost 90% of his serves are reverse pendulum serves. 2) Targeting Wang Chuqin's wide forehand. For some reason WCQ's wide forehand is an apparent weakness for him this match. Many times in this match alone he had to lunge and dive just to save the ball played out wide to his forehand which he miserably failed most of the time.
That and I would say that playing closer to the table was key. He knows that going power for power against WCQ in this stage wouldn't work so he kept the game and the strokes close, genius game plan
I think #2 is basically what FZD used to do to Ma Long. His BH was very powerful and he exploited ML's forehand. We are seeing somethingn similar here, the only difference is that FZD's backhands are incredibly powerful, while ML was insanely accurate with his shots in this game.

Reverse pendulum serve from Ma Long is similar to a pendulum serve from a left handed player except that it is going to Chuqin’s forehand. The sidespin generated by Ma Long’s reverse pendulum serve was strong enough to force Chuqin to return it to Ma Long’s backhand which he used to produce quicker returns to Chuqin’s slower forehand. To counter that Chuqin tried to use his backhand to return Ma Long’s reverse serves which in turn gave Ma Long the space to attack the return ball to Chuqin’s exposed backhand side. Either way Chuqin was fucked unless he could figure out the exact bat angle to give strong return of serves to Ma Long’s forehand or somewhere else other than Ma Long’s back hand zone. Chuqin didn’t have enough time to figure that out and it cost him the match.
If we are talking about pure talent capacity and capability this is really what MaLong is, i miss his prime years and we loyal fans got a reward for it, but if we talked about luck probably the original camera angle helps haha kidding aside but yeah i miss seeing him in this attitude inside the court

@@Rekke_yt I 100% agree that Wang Chuqin did not change his strategy. Wang Chuqin is so used to overpowering his opponents with powerful and fast strokes that he never bothered to add more depth to his game. Ma Long is just a more versatile player.
Since when the Dragon won a match could be a big upset? Yes I know Wang has been a big star for awhile, but Ma Long was and still be a legend, he just won Olympic recently, he has lots of experience dealing with the next generation. Even 40 years old Timo boll could defeat Lin Shidong (who took down Fan) or Samsonov at his end of career could still upset Lin Gaoyuan, I think it's normal that at this moment Ma Long can still take down top players.
I hope Ma Long could win this tournament, I wait for this for so long.

Watched this LIVE yesterday and it was so shocking to see this in full.

Wang being affected mentally, struggling but just couldn't take this one crucial game.
Seeing the summary one day later and it's way less impressive than LIVE, I will try to watch LIVE more often - it was so intense, almost got a heart attack.

I still remember when I first time watched Ma Long’s game 14 years ago. At that time I thought this young man would certainly become the next big thing. He made it as I expected, but he lasted way longer than my prediction.
This game is key. Ma long is receiving backhand on the short forehand serve. He has now figured out how to beat WCQ, he will win the next olympic gold.
I think that ML has to be selected above WCQ and FZD to play singles in the Olympics though. If he gets selected, I have no doubt he'll take gold. I was never convinced that WCQ was Ma Long's "kryptonite". Whenever WCQ beat ML, he was not in "Dragon Mode":) Here, we see that even relaxed dragon mode can take down world #1.
WCQ is not that weak. The key of this game is ML was very comfortable, he said he didn’t expect to win but 1 or 2 game, that’s why he called timeout in the first set. WCQ now takes responsibility in 3 events. That show the coaches believe him. He has just reach the top for a few months, he didn’t experienced enough. But after this game, I believe that he get the biggest lesson of his career by far. The future is long, let the time answer how far he can go

Few things that Ma Long do very differently in this match compared to his previous matches:
1) Using the reverse pendulum as his default serve. Its very to see Ma Long use a reverse pendulum serve. He usually only use it when he's losing and can't find a way to defeat his opponent. But in this match, almost 90% of his serves are reverse pendulum serves.
2) Targeting Wang Chuqin's wide forehand. For some reason WCQ's wide forehand is an apparent weakness for him this match. Many times in this match alone he had to lunge and dive just to save the ball played out wide to his forehand which he miserably failed most of the time.
That and I would say that playing closer to the table was key. He knows that going power for power against WCQ in this stage wouldn't work so he kept the game and the strokes close, genius game plan

I think #2 is basically what FZD used to do to Ma Long. His BH was very powerful and he exploited ML's forehand. We are seeing somethingn similar here, the only difference is that FZD's backhands are incredibly powerful, while ML was insanely accurate with his shots in this game.

Mọi người không theo dõi các phương tiện truyền thông TQ nên kbiet WCQ đã từng nói rằng cậu ấy cảm thấy bản thân ko xứng đáng đứng bên cạnh những người giỏi nhất như Fan, Sun và Ma, nhưng cậu ấy đã dùng nỗ lực để có thể tiến đến gần hơn với họ. Nhiều người ko thích thậm chí ghét WCQ vì cậu ấy đã đánh bại ML và FZD nhưng ko ai biết rằng so với tất cả mọi người cậu ấy phát triển chậm hơn rất nhiều. Trong 2 năm từ 2022, sự phát triển quá nhanh khiến cậu ta ko kịp trưởng thành, tâm lý chưa đủ hoàn thiện và chắc chắc đây chưa phải WCQ mạnh nhất. Cậu ấy hiện tại chưa có gì ngoài 1 HCB VĐTG nhưng chắc chắn cậu ta sẽ đạt đc nhiều hơn thế. Những ng ghét WCQ ko hề ít đi chỉ vì vậu ta thắng nhưng những người tin tưởng và thích cậu ta sẽ tăng lên. Ngoài SYS ra thì WCQ đang là một trong những ngôi sao trẻ bóng bàn đc quan tâm nhiều nhất ở TQ. Lý do để ngta ghét WCQ nhiều thì lý do để BHL đội tuyển TQ tin tưởng cậu ta ở cả 3 nội dụng tham dự OLP cũng rất nhiều. Chính ML cũng từng đứng ra bảo vệ WCQ thì lý do gì khiến mn ghét cậu ta đến vậy?
Thất bại này ko cho thấy WCQ yếu, nó chỉ chứng minh rằng ML quá toàn diện và vững vàng. Ở TQ họ nói rằng WCQ là đứa trẻ do ML dẫn dắt, hãy cho cậu ta tgian để chứng minh cho thế giới. ML mãi mãi là tượng đài ko ai có thể vượt qua nhưng đừng đánh giá thấp hay coi thường WCQ, cậu ta đã leo lên ví trí số 1 TG khi mà tất cả đều hướng về FZD và ML, cậu ta sẽ ko bỏ cuộc. Reverse pendulum serve from Ma Long is similar to a pendulum serve from a left handed player except that it is going to Chuqin’s forehand. The sidespin generated by Ma Long’s reverse pendulum serve was strong enough to force Chuqin to return it to Ma Long’s backhand which he used to produce quicker returns to Chuqin’s slower forehand. To counter that Chuqin tried to use his backhand to return Ma Long’s reverse serves which in turn gave Ma Long the space to attack the return ball to Chuqin’s exposed backhand side. Either way Chuqin was fucked unless he could figure out the exact bat angle to give strong return of serves to Ma Long’s forehand or somewhere else other than Ma Long’s back hand zone. Chuqin didn’t have enough time to figure that out and it cost him the match.
