Network games got better ratings 20+ years ago, i.e. over the air networks you can watch free after cutting the cord. The highest attended games were in the 1980s and 90's. And all this during the career of one of the sport's all time greatest, most compelling players. How many sports leagues with objectively lower numbers than a generation earlier do we say are "doing fine?"
Important to mention those cord cutters. People are simply watching television less. Our house doesn't even have a TV package anymore. We just stream everything.
