The problem is it's disingenuous faux contrarian radio. As Colin says himself right in this podcast, it's not authentic or genuine, and it's a manufactured process and manipulated opinion. I will give credit to Colin to show how the sausage is made, as he freely admits his thoughts mostly comes from a committee by numbers process. Colin is the reason why I listen to Le Batard now, as they wing it everyday, which makes DLS far more genuine and sincere, let alone it being organically funny. Not the manufactured manipulation that Colin admitted here. But to each his own.

The move to Fox didn't help. The way they market their sports talk people is just off-putting. Those incessant Skip and Shannon ads during the NFL season were atrocious. Yeah, Cowherd has always been a blowhard. He's basically an old school radio guy who had to fill hours of airtime, so he's just about content -- quantity, not quality. I get annoyed when these guys try to prognosticate this macro level stuff that is way out of their wheelhouse, just like Simmons podcast the other day with Ben Thompson about the media. These media personalities are entirely self-aware yet totally ignorant at the same time. They seem to realize but never want to admit that their careers are strange and precarious and they're walking a razor's edge and so whenever they talk about the state of sports or the future of media it sounds like they're on a therapist's couch trying to convince themselves that their fun and lucrative, but always unstable careers and positions, are just fine and only looking up.

He had to set up his own website in the 90s because he had no other options to do what he wanted. I'm not knocking him, he bet on himself and worked hard and it's paid off...because he's got talent and has a different voice in that world. Just like guys like Rogan, he got in on the ground floor of podcasting and had enough of a unique take to make it interesting. Not to mention cultivating connections with people who actually do have knowledge of that business to help carry you forward. I like Bill, I like what he's been able to put together, but he's not exactly a visionary CEO. That said, the media and entertainment industry is steering itself gleefully toward a cliff thru reckless spending via debt, shortsighted decisions the past decade and cynically believing China and its authoritarian government would be some permanent money machine for them. But hey, at least certain individuals like Bill got paid.

17:12 the NBA ratings drop isn't a 1 year anomaly. Finals ratings were higher in the 90's. Regular season ratings were higher in the 90's. Network games got better ratings 20+ years ago, i.e. over the air networks you can watch free after cutting the cord. The highest attended games were in the 1980s and 90's. And all this during the career of one of the sport's all time greatest, most compelling players.
