Testing more 18650 Li-ion cells (REAL vs. FAKE)

  • Today I tested even more of 3.7V 18650 Li-ion batteries from Ebay and explained how to tell the real ones from the fake ones. 18650 Li-ion cells that weigh under 40g tend to have a low capacity. The cells marked over 3500mAh are surely fake and actually are about 500mAh only. Cells with spelling errors also tend to be fake. Button top batteries are way more likely to be fake than the flat top ones. Suspiciously cheap cells are usually fake or recycled from e-waste (rewrapped cells salvaged from old laptops or other devices). Marks from previous spot welds may be covered using metal circles. Recycled cells may range from almost unused to totally worn out. Fake batteries may claim a protection they don't have.
    List of all 18650 Li-ion cells I've tested:

    It's kind of funny they are marked mAh when they are above 1K m.. I mean it could just say 2.5Ah intead of 2500mAh. It's like if I live 600 meters from the nearest store, I'd go around telling people I had to travel 600000 millimeters to get milk.

    One apparently also now has to be careful about relying on cell weight. I've read of some manufacturers packing sand or other compounds in low-capacity and/or counterfeit 18650 cells to make them appear heavier and thus closer to the expected weight for a higher-capacity cell.

      Funny enough, I bought an 18650 online with no description for 5$ and when I got it it said its capacity is 75,000 mah, in my mind I was like, WTF?????
      So I weighed it after I saw this video and my battery was 12.5 grams, I’m guessing that’s meaning 250 mah, the lesson here is, don’t buy HUGE UNBELIEVABLE capacity batteries on wish.
      Edit: when I charged it, it literally took 15 minutes for a full “75,000 mah”charge. What bullshit, lol.

    • @TheSpotify95
      @TheSpotify95 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@zenberryflood For such a low weight, it was probably a really tiny battery inside (like, 200mAh or less) and the casing.
      There are some examples whereby the case is filled with sand (as well as a tiny battery), or if there is just not enough material for any decent capacity (like how the 500mAh cells are built to).

    The batteries will last longer in long term storage at about 3.5 v. This is less that full capacity. At full capacity they degrade faster. According to manufacturer literature. This rule is valid regardless of the size capacity of the battery. Before use, after long term storage, the batteries should be topped off to 3.82 volts.
    The 3.8V is good when a person is recharging and using the batteries on a regular basis.

    • @TheSpotify95
      @TheSpotify95 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      the 25g/500mAh batteries are (or were) made at a price point and were designed to be poor quality, with almost no material inside - hence the 500mAh only.

      Spiderfire = when you try to recharge it, a giant fire tarantula comes out of the battery and bites you
      Ultrofite = we tried to copy ultrafire, but we failed miserably by making slightly better batteries than them
      SingFire = the flames that are bursting out of the battery make a whistling sound while your precious gadget is burned
      MarsFire = Sponsored by the CNSA and will be used on their next mission on Mars as portable heaters
      UranusFire = can be used to set the planet Uranus on fire. No warranty. Point away from face.
      Bestfire = We give you another battery for free if it hasn't combusted your expensive gadget properly.
      RichFire = When the battery bursts into flames, these will be composed of pure gold.
      LusteFire, TangFire, FandyFire, Kinfire = plz stop
      It's unbelievable how many [something]Fire batteries there are out there, and it's slightly less unbelievable that all of them are total garbage :)

    Is it still possible to get these things shipped to EU countries? The last time I ordered 18650s and some other batteries they just don't arrive so I'm thinking at some point someone notices them and stops them from being shipped, I could use some cheap cells because the capacity is not really an issue and the good ones are ridiculously expensive

    • @deDANIEL11609

    • @waldevv
      @waldevv 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@deDANIEL11609 I have a few devices that use them, also I could refurbish the battery pack for one of my old laptops since it's still one of the old fatter laptops that had a bunch of 18650s inside the battery
      I'm just thinking that maybe they tightened something recently because a lot of listings wont ship to the EU anymore. Obviously it's not a big loss because eBay always refunds them but I've tried twice and also ordered a replacement battery for a PSP and PS3 controller but I had to refund every single one of those 4 times
      There's usually some chinese sellers with european warehouses with slightly higher costs so I wonder if they have some batteries as I've never had problems inside the EU

    I have a question that is somewhat related to this. I have a tool that has 2 lithium ion cells in it and the tool says 7.2 volts, which is fine, that's the 2 cells together. But the charger for it says that it's output is 9 volts, which I know is also fine to charge those. But when I test the output with my multimeter it says 15 volts. I know they aren't always accurate with what they say, but that's way off. What would be the reason for that?

    • @puckcat22679
      @puckcat22679 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If the charger isn't loaded (connected to the tool) when you test it, the voltage will be significantly higher. You always test output voltage of a transformer or power supply with a load. Also, the tool almost certainly has voltage regulation circuitry that adjusts the charging voltage to conditions.

    3,35V is the voltage alot of manufacturer use for NEW Batteries. This Voltage ist perfectly ok as there is no BMS that could drain the Batterie.

      I have a 20ah high gain power bank and it has 5 4ah lithium tubes that discharge at 4volts 1 amp. You can tell the difference from any fake 4ah tubes because the real ones weigh 750 grams and the games are 300grams at only 1885 mah

    You should measure the weight of the batteries before and after they were discharged :-) there should be a difference, because depleted, they dont have any more electrons left (or just few pieces as the residual charge)...

      Elektrony se pohybujou jen uvnitř baterie. Tím se hmotnost nezmění. Relativistická změna hmotnosti u tý nejlepší z těch tří, která má 9Wh, by byla 0.00000000036 gramu. Až seženu váhu, která měří do aspoň 50g s přesností na 10 nebo 11 desetinných míst, tak to můžu ověřit :). Ale myslím, že váha tý baterie se mnohem víc změní, když na ní sáhnu. Nějaký atomy se z povrchu obrousej a nějaký atomy kůže na ní přibydou :D. Myslím, že se ta váha baterie změní víc dokonce i když na ní jen dejchnu nebo možná jen když se na ní podívám. :)

      alfagulf our DiodeGoneWild is just writting about the fact, that he (and other people) is like a snake: loosing skin, but unlikely is not leaving it in one part on some place, but per-partes leaving it on warious places (e.g. batteries) making the surrounding objects in the natural habitat of the "Man" heavier (some analogy of a dog marking his territory - therefore the 🐕 in the shot).

    Batteries with capacity over 2800 mAh are usually fake and also usually worse than the ones with lower capacity, like a battery with 6500 mAh had just 550 mAh.

    • @Wowzersdude-k5c
      @Wowzersdude-k5c 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not true. There are legit 3500 mAh batteries out there. Typically their output current is low, though. The Sony VTC-6 is 3000 mAh and puts out 20A safely. It is the best 18650 on the market if you need a high drain battery.

      the most common ecig explosive or fire failure is from people who buy mech mods but do not know how to use them. Has little to do with what battery they used.

    You should never get to 3.3v with Li-ion cells.
    Not even for short periods. Even 3.5v makes me cringe a bit. 3.7 is my desired minimum voltage.

    I go with what I saw in another video- fake batteries will be less than 40 mg. If you don’t have a scale tap together and you can hear by density. Of course common sense says be leery from the higher Rated over 3500mAh for the 18650 size battery

    Dajú sa nejako oživiť tieto 18650 články? V notebooku som mal LG 3000mah ale baterka odišla lebo mala už zopár rokov a miesto 3000 majú kapacitu cca 900mah je mi ich ľúto vyhodiť :)

    • @DiodeGoneWild
      @DiodeGoneWild  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pokud vím, tak se to nedá. Dá se zbavit rychlýho samovybíjení článků (uděláš několik cyklů) a samovybíjení se výrazně sníží. To jsem úspěšně dělal. Ale kapacita se obnovit asi nedá. Nebo o tom nevím...

      No, you can't. The protection only can disconnect the battery in some fault condition, but it can't regulate the current.
