This is a great unit for the price IMO. I've only had this installed in my car (fitted myself) for 4 days, the sound quality is superb even with factory speakers, you do have to have a play with the EQ for the sound you're looking for however. I'm going to have to upgrade my car speakers now lol. You can upload a custom wallpaper from a USB stick or your phone via USB, other than the choice it gives with moving backgrounds etc. My few gripes at current are: -Limited RGB colour options compared to the DA130 etc -No ability to play included Subtitles within a video container (MKV/MP4) or alongside -No ability to store multiple wallpapers to later choose from (which leads to) -How long it takes to access a USB stick with wallpapers/media on it and having to repeat the process to see how different pictures look as wallpapers -Inability to use slider skip function for audio via BT, the FFWD/RWD doesn't have a linear speed the longer you hold down (or options to customise how far ahead it incrementally skips), so skipping ahead in longer MP3/M4A files is a chore -Volume slider covers play/pause/FFWD/skip, so if you adjust the volume and immediately want to skip the track or anything via screen, you can't -A "normalise audio" function would be great, but that would apply to all head units and I'll just have to do it via the source For a modern head-unit, I did expect it to be a bit snappier with greater resolution, even for the price (technology). However it does have some great features for its price point, and the sound itself is great for the tier it's priced at. Hopefully they'll release a Firmware update with some additional/missing features in the future but otherwise, it's good for the price point and against older, more higher end models, it's got better responsiveness.

Sony AX5550D on that I just taped the parking brake cable to the unit to ground it.... You mentioned the black cable? Do I just splice into that? Thanks for the content. Subbed 😊
Am I missing something? You plugged the usb cable into the back of the unit but surely this isn't possible once it's installed into a vehicle? Iv just ordered one for my van. But I can't see any other ports for usb
I’ve just had one of these fitted but didn’t realise I had to have my phone plugged into it all the time. So the connection cable comes into the glovebox, but that means I have to keep the glovebox open all the time in order to use it, or if I shut it with the cable coming out to my phone the cable will be damaged?

I have this installed in a vehicle imported from the UK, but we do not have DAB in the US. Do you know if DAB is hardware or software? I was just wondering if I can change it to HD radio? Cheers
hello Alex, thanks for this, i bought one of these for my Boxer van, I had a go at installing it myself which went ok apart from it only works with ignition on not on accessory, would you know a work around, thanks
many cars don't have acc anymore they all require ignition the pioneer needs a 12v ign and acc sometimes doesn't cut it you could try adding a switch to simulate acc instead of glow plugs on all the time

I bought it, after watching your video, and installed it yesterday. Today my battery was dead... After some web surching I found out it is common for Pioneer head units to drain batteries, is the only solution a switch on the red or yellow wires?
Had this unit fitted but noticed the time runs slow. Car clock time is accurate but the unit clock runs about 20 mins slower, gets progressively slower over time! Any ideas why?
I've just ordered this unit with a DAB Screen Aerial with the full installation kit to intregrate with the steering controls on my Peugeot 307. Have been quoted almost £600 for this to be installed. Is this a fair quote. I am just worried that the clock and trip computer will not get affected by this.

I installed this in my 2005 VW transporter and it's draining my (heavy duty) battery. Any tips to stop this. My alternator is working. I spoke to Halfords and they told me to buy an adaptor (but looks like steering wheel adapter) CTSVW002.2 Thank you in advance
@@kennyboyle4042 shouldn't make a difference the connects 2 lead only uses the perm live and the ignition is generated from can bus . The only thing to check is the plugs. some early golf's had a wire where the remote turn on is for an amp or aerial was coincided with the alarm central locking wire and this stopped the cars unlocking . Check the iso plug and quad lock plug to make sure you have the wires right . I dont trust halfords know this and could have missed the issue . But if the drain is apparent with the stereo plugged in you could have a wire draining power to ground causing the flat battery . You could of course have a faulty can bus box or a faulty stereo but check the wiring first
So officially you have a stand alone screen . And a separate single din chassis behind the dash . It would be easier to use a z7200dab and work the front with some fibreglass
i installed head unit and the volume is extremely low. I have to turn it up halfway just to hear it very low, do you have any idea why this may be happening???
you cant use a remote not compateble as for the sound when she talks if you quickly press the volume you have two parts navi volume and source volume just keep her loud and the source way down

I installed such a radio tape recorder in the Hyundai Sonata NF. But the fact is that the sound is much worse than it was with the head unit. Tell me, if you put an amplifier, the sound quality will improve? And if so, which one do you recommend?
There is no av in right, To Connect a external divise. Only screen mirror om Android, does it show apps like Netflix, Disney+ etc? Or are these blocked? Thnx!

its certainly specs the same on paper louisiana make sure your usb is a full speed lead and not just charging use the phones oe cable not a cheaper copy . you can check compatibility on the web to see if your phone is good enough but lollypop 5.0 and above should work
I’m about to pick one up from a guy that couldn’t install it in his car for 200€ It’s basically new, the menu looks really slow even though the android car screen was fast I wanna use it for apple carplay, will the speed be similar to the android car screen? How can I access my board computer with the device ? I have a Opel/Vauxhaull Astra H with steering wheel controls
It probably needs a software update . You can access cars computer with the right lead from connects2 the instructions will show a long button press or pressing a pair of buttons together quickly defaults into the cars systems

Yes we covered this in a video once you are paired via the app you have to re pair bluetooth for audio then it works weird little glitch auto link need to patch
I’ve just bought one, Really disheartened that you can only mirror link through android not iPhone even though it says on the back of the box ‘made for iPhone’ would also think for the price they would include a DAB Ariel.
apple won't allow any mirror sharing in a car its legal jargon about being sued. made for iphone just means the interaction and carplay works. i moved away from apple because of the big brither says status and now i love samsung for this exact reason

Fitted into a 2009 Ducato based motorhome and its drawing 1.2amps from the battery with ignition off. Just used the cables supplied from the seller. When you disconnect the yellow and slave it via the cigarette lighter you get a 0.2amp draw with ignition of but of course the unit won't work with ignition off. I may have to run an on off switch for the yellow cable to the dashboard for operating the radio with ignition off.
I didn't catch the bit how the green wire is attached for American vehicles? can I just connect the green to the ground like UK models for handiness Alex?
yes just to the black , american models may require a switch some dont like the constant earth and dont work i did see an alpine one have a melt down because it was constant
Hi Alex forgot to ask if its the earth wire or positive wire at the handbrake switch the green wire connects too? conflicting reports on the net. I know you mentioned earth. I am going to wire it to a switch of some type eventually but just to get it going now.
@grenadekid you wire it to what ever and then in the menu you tell the pioneer if it's a positive switched or ground switched but check with a test light or metre first
if u use google maps on android auto, do u have to type on the pioneer or can u still search for the adress on your phone? and does the typing on the unit work well to search for an adress?

@@nicghg8496 you can search three ways voice. Or on the pioneer Google address search bar . Or if you pick up your phone and open it you can go to Google to do a search as normal . The maps and search will stay disconnected as you type but after you click on directions it transfers back to the car screen.. hope that helps
To be approved for car use apple use carplay and android use android auto they limit what you can do behind the wheel for safety reasons that's how every new car has these new options not the cheaper android open based download feature otherwise some tool would crash and kill people playing flappy bird
Hi I brought a new stereo a340dab pioneer 2 months ago from halfords and they couldn't get the steering wheel controls working they ordered a nother 2 steering modules and still can't get it working I've been back 3 times what is the problem it's on a smax 2oo7 thanks for any advice
Jeez where to start . Something is not right either wrong product or wrong fitter . I can't do much over the Internet. Other than see a professional not halfords they should help

Hi just had the da160 fitted and the steering wheel controls are working now 👍 on the ignition part can you wire it up so that it comes on first ignition click instead of having it full on 👍
@@davenixon149 probably not the can box that adds ignition is driven by the cars canbus so it takes to the second turn for the car to turn its own can network on
hey have put this radio in my corolla verso .. and cant get the steering wheel control to work . when i start the car it just keep turning vol down . and i have to press rest to get it to work . have install it correct . but it just wont work .. wtf am i doing wrong

Hi - Recently fitted this unit. Kia Sportage 2009 One or two teething problems which I'm working through. One is that the clock/date doesn't move forward when the car is switched off. Works fine when car is on. The radio does seem to save it's other settings such as radio presets bluetooth etc. Will the swapping of the red/red and yellow/yellow wires to red/yellow fix cure this or am I missing something obvious? Thanks
Great video - does the screen split when you recieve a call and are using google maps via apple carplay, or does the call screen replace the google maps screen completely obscuring the map directions?
Just installed this in my old let's-call-it-a-car, only thing I miss is subwoofer phase setting. In the specs it states normal and reverse phase is supported, however this setting is no where to be found. Even the manual doesn't mention it, except for the specs section. If some of you know how to reverse sub phase I'll be happy to know..
I just fitted this in the car, it won't turn on. I haven't got any experience with fitting these and thought I'd give it a go. I did take the (-) off the car battery before messing around with it. I plugged in the adaptor (Corsa VXR 64 plate), the radio, mic and usb. I reattached the (-) to the battery and nothing. I've definitely f£&+ed it somehow, which step(s) have I missed? And what would the steps be? Many thanks
firstly dont panic , well done for giving it a go , a radio only needs three things to turn on a ground black wire . ignition red and yellow perm 12v for the memory . check you have these with a test meter and youll find one is missing usually the ign what leads did you use
@@AlexCarter-AscAudio I do remember there being a red cable I left dangling 🙄🤣 read somewhere I need to channel that through to the fuse box in the glove box and connect to the number 3 fuse? I'm not sure I can get the unit back out anyway without damaging the fascia 🤣

it will still work semi normal but for safety things that aren't driver aids stop because your in motion . every customer requests the bypass so we have always done it that way

It needs an app called auto link to mirror I know the android phones can install it and mirror but I don't think apple allow screen mirroring. I'm sure I've had this convo with my pioneer tech guy and he said apple don't allow screen mirroring on any device . 😒
Hi mate, I’ve been interested in getting my stereo changed for a while. I have a Toyota Auris 2009 and was wondering if it would be a good fit for this or the Pioneer SPH-DA230DAB? If you were to recommend one, which one would you say? Also, when using apple car play and using waze can you also use Bluetooth to play music at the same time or other apps like Spotify? When connecting to apple car play via wire, does the phone charge? If not then is there another way to charge the phone whilst connected to apple car play as I have an iPhone? @@AlexCarter-AscAudio Great, i'll look into the 230. I could get the 360 as it's only a couple quid difference from the 230 to the 360 and the 360 is a wireless Apple car play. Is there any point in upgrading to the wireless 360 as that is also available at Halfords? Also, if I was to get the wireless will I still need to download an app on my phone to screen mirror? Apologies for all the questions mate, I appreciate your help.
Unfortunate I found out too late that it only offer 5 colors (red, blue, green, amber and white) for the softkey illumination. Red color is actually more magenta, white has a light blue touch. Returned it to sender and opened a case with Pioneer which advised to go for the 250DAB, which is hard to get at current.

Hi Alex problems again on my new 160dab it comes on first click on ignition which is good but when I turn the car over it goes off it will come back on in a couple of minutes or it doesn't come on at all I've had so much problems 👍
right your ignition has a cut whilst cranking , that means the ign is started on first click but the car removes the power as the vehicle actually starts this is causing the stereo to freak out what car is it

@@AlexCarter-AscAudio Thanks Alex. Today I put my lights on first then turned the engine over and waited for a period of time stereo did not come on then I switched off and lights off turned engine over again with out lights on and it came on even with just the side lights on it won't come on 👍
Just installed one of these. One thing that none of the reviews online seem to talk about is the sound quality. From my initial tests tonight, it's not a patch on the old VW RCD310 that I took out. Very disappointed. I'm tempted to remove the unit and go back to the RCD310 while I research similar units with better audio output. Or maybe I messed up with the settings somehow but I don't think I did. It sounds pants! The problem is I bought two of these (one for my van and the other for the missus' golf) and now I'm wondering whether I should bother fitting the second unit in my missus' car tomorrow.. Hmmm
@@AlexCarter-AscAudio It just sounds tinny and cheap compared with the RCD310. Admittedly I didn't look at the audio specs versus the RCD310 before I bought it. I guess sound quality is a subjective thing. But it just seems to have no oomph. It's lacklustre. Losses in the wiring harness fitting kit? I was listening via the AUX connection. Will have another play today to see if I've missed something
So musically it will be heaps better than the stock unit . On an rta the signal will be fuller and flatter than an oe stereo . Your rcd will be eq'd to sound the way it does . Adding an amp will improve the sound or playing with the eq will help .

I take it back! I fitted the same unit in my missus' golf and it sounds pretty good. Used a different wiring kit. Maybe that's the issue? Also the unit in my T5 takes an age to start up sometimes
Considering to buy it, 2 questions though: I have a 2006 Focus ST and I’d love to keep steering wheel control, do you know if that’s possible? And do I need to buy anything extra? Also, does apple carplay work thru bluetooth? I read reviews of people saying carplay only worked thru cable.
It's actually 800x480 native according to the manual, it has adaptive resolution and plays 1080p for .avi/mp4/mkv etc. The usual display is lower however, and Maps via Android Auto really looks pretty rough. It's a good unit for the price though.
@@TellytubbyVids jdm cars tend to earth through a cage chassis or plug make sure there is an earth if not make a proper wire to ground the antenna will work as a temp earth but if the volume is cranked up the radio will turn off and on with poor resistance so wire it properly to ground
@@dterra0x733, my clock doesn't keep time either. Also, as my car is keyless start it will only turn on if I start the car straightaway. If I prime my glow plugs first, then start the car, the stereo stays off. It also won't turn on if the weather is too cold. Not impressed with this unit and wish I'd bought something else instead.

Hi Alex, another great video 👍🏻 I’m looking at Pioneer 160, 230 & 250 units. In terms of responsiveness and speed, which unit would be better? Also, will I be ok to run one of these units without an amp? The unit would be replacing a factory Ford unit so I would be hoping to have the same audio quality as a minimum. Cheers, Jonny

I was drawn to the 250 as fancied the capacitive screen, how does it compare in look and feel to the 230? I do prefer the physical buttons along the bottom of the 230 as it would integrate better in my car but would ultimately go with the one that has the best screen/look/feel. Thanks again, Jonny
@@colin5064 the pioneer 230 is made in-house and I think better . The 7 inch screen is also better than the 6.2 . There are more functions and options for customization on the 230 . The 160 does have wireless but still prefer the 230

its an extension you then run the usb lead to the glove box for easy access

It charges but it comes with a usb extension use you phones oe lead not a cheap copy

I've just ordered this unit with a DAB Screen Aerial with the full installation kit to intregrate with the steering controls on my Peugeot 307. Have been quoted almost £600 for this to be installed. Is this a fair quote. I am just worried that the clock and trip computer will not get affected by this.

@@kennyboyle4042 shouldn't make a difference the connects 2 lead only uses the perm live and the ignition is generated from can bus . The only thing to check is the plugs. some early golf's had a wire where the remote turn on is for an amp or aerial was coincided with the alarm central locking wire and this stopped the cars unlocking . Check the iso plug and quad lock plug to make sure you have the wires right . I dont trust halfords know this and could have missed the issue . But if the drain is apparent with the stereo plugged in you could have a wire draining power to ground causing the flat battery .
You could of course have a faulty can bus box or a faulty stereo but check the wiring first

you cant use a remote not compateble as for the sound when she talks if you quickly press the volume you have two parts navi volume and source volume just keep her loud and the source way down

its certainly specs the same on paper louisiana make sure your usb is a full speed lead and not just charging use the phones oe cable not a cheaper copy . you can check compatibility on the web to see if your phone is good enough but lollypop 5.0 and above should work

It probably needs a software update . You can access cars computer with the right lead from connects2 the instructions will show a long button press or pressing a pair of buttons together quickly defaults into the cars systems

apple won't allow any mirror sharing in a car its legal jargon about being sued. made for iphone just means the interaction and carplay works. i moved away from apple because of the big brither says status and now i love samsung for this exact reason

Fitted into a 2009 Ducato based motorhome and its drawing 1.2amps from the battery with ignition off. Just used the cables supplied from the seller. When you disconnect the yellow and slave it via the cigarette lighter you get a 0.2amp draw with ignition of but of course the unit won't work with ignition off. I may have to run an on off switch for the yellow cable to the dashboard for operating the radio with ignition off.

yes just to the black , american models may require a switch some dont like the constant earth and dont work i did see an alpine one have a melt down because it was constant

Hi Alex forgot to ask if its the earth wire or positive wire at the handbrake switch the green wire connects too? conflicting reports on the net. I know you mentioned earth. I am going to wire it to a switch of some type eventually but just to get it going now.
@grenadekid you wire it to what ever and then in the menu you tell the pioneer if it's a positive switched or ground switched but check with a test light or metre first

@@nicghg8496 you can search three ways voice. Or on the pioneer Google address search bar . Or if you pick up your phone and open it you can go to Google to do a search as normal . The maps and search will stay disconnected as you type but after you click on directions it transfers back to the car screen.. hope that helps

To be approved for car use apple use carplay and android use android auto they limit what you can do behind the wheel for safety reasons that's how every new car has these new options not the cheaper android open based download feature otherwise some tool would crash and kill people playing flappy bird

One or two teething problems which I'm working through.
One is that the clock/date doesn't move forward when the car is switched off. Works fine when car is on. The radio does seem to save it's other settings such as radio presets bluetooth etc.
Will the swapping of the red/red and yellow/yellow wires to red/yellow fix cure this or am I missing something obvious?

Answering my own question :) Swapping the Red/Yellow wires worked with no obvious down sides so far.
yellow is the perm memory red is ign it swopping it will work as long as the yellow doesnt drop out to 0 volts too

Great video - does the screen split when you recieve a call and are using google maps via apple carplay, or does the call screen replace the google maps screen completely obscuring the map directions?
It obscures the map but if you press the x button it goes back to the map
Just installed this in my old let's-call-it-a-car, only thing I miss is subwoofer phase setting. In the specs it states normal and reverse phase is supported, however this setting is no where to be found. Even the manual doesn't mention it, except for the specs section. If some of you know how to reverse sub phase I'll be happy to know..

I just fitted this in the car, it won't turn on. I haven't got any experience with fitting these and thought I'd give it a go. I did take the (-) off the car battery before messing around with it. I plugged in the adaptor (Corsa VXR 64 plate), the radio, mic and usb. I reattached the (-) to the battery and nothing. I've definitely f£&+ed it somehow, which step(s) have I missed? And what would the steps be? Many thanks

a radio only needs three things to turn on a ground black wire . ignition red and yellow perm 12v for the memory .
check you have these with a test meter and youll find one is missing usually the ign what leads did you use

it will still work semi normal but for safety things that aren't driver aids stop because your in motion . every customer requests the bypass so we have always done it that way

It needs an app called auto link to mirror I know the android phones can install it and mirror but I don't think apple allow screen mirroring. I'm sure I've had this convo with my pioneer tech guy and he said apple don't allow screen mirroring on any device . 😒

Unfortunate I found out too late that it only offer 5 colors (red, blue, green, amber and white) for the softkey illumination. Red color is actually more magenta, white has a light blue touch. Returned it to sender and opened a case with Pioneer which advised to go for the 250DAB, which is hard to get at current.
imo the 230 is a way better unit and there is stock
also the 160 is the first pioneer that isnt made in house ,,,,,, just to add

Hi Alex problems again on my new 160dab it comes on first click on ignition which is good but when I turn the car over it goes off it will come back on in a couple of minutes or it doesn't come on at all I've had so much problems 👍
right your ignition has a cut whilst cranking , that means the ign is started on first click but the car removes the power as the vehicle actually starts this is causing the stereo to freak out what car is it

Just installed one of these. One thing that none of the reviews online seem to talk about is the sound quality. From my initial tests tonight, it's not a patch on the old VW RCD310 that I took out. Very disappointed. I'm tempted to remove the unit and go back to the RCD310 while I research similar units with better audio output. Or maybe I messed up with the settings somehow but I don't think I did. It sounds pants!
The problem is I bought two of these (one for my van and the other for the missus' golf) and now I'm wondering whether I should bother fitting the second unit in my missus' car tomorrow.. Hmmm

@@AlexCarter-AscAudio It just sounds tinny and cheap compared with the RCD310. Admittedly I didn't look at the audio specs versus the RCD310 before I bought it. I guess sound quality is a subjective thing. But it just seems to have no oomph. It's lacklustre. Losses in the wiring harness fitting kit? I was listening via the AUX connection. Will have another play today to see if I've missed something
So musically it will be heaps better than the stock unit . On an rta the signal will be fuller and flatter than an oe stereo . Your rcd will be eq'd to sound the way it does . Adding an amp will improve the sound or playing with the eq will help .

I take it back! I fitted the same unit in my missus' golf and it sounds pretty good. Used a different wiring kit. Maybe that's the issue? Also the unit in my T5 takes an age to start up sometimes

Full HD 1080p
It's actually 800x480 native according to the manual, it has adaptive resolution and plays 1080p for .avi/mp4/mkv etc. The usual display is lower however, and Maps via Android Auto really looks pretty rough. It's a good unit for the price though.
With the parking brake wire, do you just need to ground it somewhere on the car?

@@TellytubbyVids jdm cars tend to earth through a cage chassis or plug make sure there is an earth if not make a proper wire to ground the antenna will work as a temp earth but if the volume is cranked up the radio will turn off and on with poor resistance so wire it properly to ground

The copious amount of wires and where they go, when powered up the clock doesn't keep time, I stupidly thought it was going to be plug'n'play 🙄
@@dterra0x733, my clock doesn't keep time either. Also, as my car is keyless start it will only turn on if I start the car straightaway. If I prime my glow plugs first, then start the car, the stereo stays off. It also won't turn on if the weather is too cold.
Not impressed with this unit and wish I'd bought something else instead.

Also, will I be ok to run one of these units without an amp? The unit would be replacing a factory Ford unit so I would be hoping to have the same audio quality as a minimum. Cheers, Jonny
You will have a better sound from the oe radio straight away . I'd go for a 230 personally Or a 250 you don't need an amp but it's always a good idea
@@AlexCarter-AscAudio thanks Alex, good to hear one of those units will offer some improvement over the OE radio. I was drawn to the 250 as fancied the capacitive screen, how does it compare in look and feel to the 230? I do prefer the physical buttons along the bottom of the 230 as it would integrate better in my car but would ultimately go with the one that has the best screen/look/feel. Thanks again, Jonny

@@colin5064 the pioneer 230 is made in-house and I think better . The 7 inch screen is also better than the 6.2 .
There are more functions and options for customization on the 230 . The 160 does have wireless but still prefer the 230
