The Path To 1,000,000... Canoeing the "Big Trout Loop" Algonquin Provincial Park

  • Venture through one of Algonquin's most popular and beautiful canoe routes... "The Big Trout Loop". Join us on this canoe trip, as we paddle across big lakes and down winding creeks. This route offers some fantastic camping and fishing along the way.
    Two years ago we decided to dive head first into the wild world of TH-cam. The first trip video we ever made was on this route, The Big Trout Loop. We have learned a lot since that first video. We may have been a little naive thinking that 1,000,000 views would be relatively easy! We can tell you now that "The Path to 1,000,000" views or subscribers is certainly not an easy one, but it's been such a fun and interesting experience so far. We hope you guys enjoy our second version of the Big Trout Loop video!
    Some very kind people have recently asked us how they can support us and our channel. Our honest answer is "please continue to watch, like, and share"! It truly means the world! If that isn't enough for you, we have set up a "Buy me a Coffee" account, where you can donate if you wish. Any money donated will go towards making more films! Thank you so much, Keenan & Ashley :)

    I am so happy you made the decision to film your trips that enabled us to also go on these adventures into the 'wild' with you. Great catches Ashley!! It was also great to see all the fish in that one rocky creek area you went through! Thank you Keenan and Ashley - & Betty Lou and Hugo - for bringing the outdoor into my 'concrete jungle' (city living) life. 😃💗

    Brings back memories. I was born in 54 so probably in the very early 60s paddling to Burnt Island Well My parents and Older sister did most of the paddling. A float plane landed and checked fishing license. They also chatted for 20 minutes or more. Now I live in AK. Probably won't get back that way.

    I have been feasting on your videos and loving them. I commented on another video regarding a couple of books on the Park. Ottelyn Addison who wrote Early Days in Algonquin Park also wrote Tom Thomson, The Algonquin Years which may also be of interest. She was my Aunt and one of five children of Mark Robinson, my grandfather and Park Ranger from early in the last century until retiring in 1936. My dad was Jack, his eldest son. I wonder if you have paddled Cedar Lake? I have wonderful memories that include the adventure of getting there by train from Ottawa in the middle of the night. I heard my first wolf howls while camping on one of the islands. There is a Robinson Lake somewhere in the Park though I have found it on a map only once and that many years ago. I think it is quite small.

    Maybe Frank Kuiack’s (The Last Guide) niece might be willing to do a collaborative series showcasing Algonquin park and it’s many lakes. Perhaps staying the night at their favorite lake, I think it’s now called Marie’s lake after his second wife.
    That and a “gear” video would be a couple suggestions.
    Many dog lovers might enjoy a vid about how you trained your dogs and what goes in to keeping them safe, in the wilderness and in the water.

    Please share your secret for such an effortless canoe portage. We changed from fiberglass to kevlar last year & single person carry was ugly. It's up, it's down. such long, slow tips while carrying. Spent so much time fighting the canoe. What's the trick for balance - please, dear god, show me the way. :)
    Also, cool that there's a Canoe Hound sticker in there. Totally jealous of the trout y'all caught.
    Paddle on. you guys are great!

    • @CanoeTheNorth
      @CanoeTheNorth  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks very much for the comment! Glad you noticed the stickers!!! So your having a difficult time with the single person carry…..are you carrying a pack at the same time??? I know sometimes depending on the pack frame it can through the balance off a bit. Maybe it’s the yolk that’s not quite right? We have experimented with different yolk and yolk pads and have a couple decent options that make portaging a little more comfortable. Let us know if there is something in particular that’s the main issue and maybe we will have a idea of how to help. Hope you have a great canoe tripping season.

      @@CanoeTheNorth Thanks very much for taking time to read and respond! I assumed it was a weight distribution issue - make it a little tail heavy & pull down, or vice versa. It's been like driving in snow on all seasons. The nose starts drifting up & I over compensate, then it's headed for the ground. I always use a yoke pad. Sometimes with a pack, most of the time without. I think I'll spend some time staring at your videos & see if I can spot the difference. Wishing you a fantastic tripping season too!!

    I'm a really experienced tripper here so difficulty is not really a problem and I'd like to stay away from the corridor 60 area.
    What were some of your favorite routes through the park that would fit this time frame?

    • @CanoeTheNorth
      @CanoeTheNorth  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Tooze. We might be a bit late on the reply as we just got back from a canoe trip ourselves. we actually just did a route that might interest you. We left from the Tim river and the went up to big Bob. Our original plan was to take the Nipissing river across and work our way back to Rosebary but because I screwed our booking up we had to backtrack and go back the way we came from big bob to Rosebary. (we needed 1 more night basically). From Rosebary/ Longbow we went down the Tim river and worked our way back through Stag lake and Devine lake. the original route would be kind of a figure 8 shape. We ended up seeing 12 moose in total and it was a really nice interesting route. I think adding the nipissing section would have made the trip even more interesting if you like that type of travel. I think this route in 6 days would be just about perfect.
      We stayed
      Day 1 - Big Bob
      (Day 2 original plan was to stay somewhere along the nipissing but somehow I forgot to book the site)
      Day 2 - Longbow
      Day 3 - Tim river (last site before the 2.7KM portage)
      Day 4 - Devine
      Day 5 - Longbow again
      Hope this maybe helps or interests you. Let me know of you happen to have any questions and happy tripping!!!

    The Canoe Song is always a good one. "My Paddles Keen and Bright." Find it on TH-cam.
    (Here are the lyrics courtesy of Anjali Silva.)
    My paddle’s keen and bright, flashing like silver. Follow the wild goose flight, dip, dip and swing. Dip, dip and swing it back, flashing like silver, swift as the wild goose flight, dip, dip and swing. The morning, it greets; the earth is our friend. Our journey through water begins once again. My paddle’s keen and bright, flashing like silver. Follow the wild goose flight, dip, dip and swing. Dip, dip and swing it back, flashing like silver, swift as the wild goose flight, dip, dip and swing. (Altos only: Dip, dip and swing). The blue sky surrounds; the river, it bends. We follow its winding, darkness descends. (Altos only: Hey ya na, hey ya na, hey ya na, hey ya. Hey ya na, he ya na, hey ya na, hey.) My paddle’s keen and bright, flashing like silver. Follow the wild goose flight, dip, dip and swing. Dip, dip and swing it back, flashing like silver, swift as the wild goose flight, (Altos only: dip, dip and swing). Swift as the wild goose flight. Hey ya na, hey!
