    Lovely injunction to learn about the reality of Irish history. That being said, St. Patrick was indeed a Catholic, in the sense that he was a bishop in a Church that enjoyed full communion with the Church in Rome. He was also of the Latin Rite, as evidenced by the fact that his writings (the Confession) are found in Latin. The Irish language, beautiful as it was, did not find its way into the language of worship in Ireland until the 1960s. It's also worth pointing out that St. Patrick was a bit of an interesting cultural addition: he was English, and indeed, from a part of the country right close to the modern border between England and Scotland.

      Thanks for pointing this out. This is clearly evidenced by manuscripts too, the Book of Kells being a Latin Gospel Book, or the Stowe Missal, an Irish book for saying (the traditional latin) mass...

      Difference between the 'Celtic' and 'Roman' communities are generally exaggerated, and they were largely there because of the distance of Ireland and the British Isles in general from the heart of the continent. Note however the Council of Whitby (664) and other concils that brought the Celts into perfect doctrinal harmony and even uniformised practice to a greater extent

    To celebrate Saint Patrick's day here in Belfast, I'll be having some friends over for a whiskey tasting, we have the Redbreast 15 year old , the Bushmills 21 year old and the Teeling 13 year old revival to compare and contrast. Small measures only, goes without saying.

    Great into!Great review, I had the good fortune of trying Bushmills 21 year old at a ceremony .I was so surprised how it tasted and how it finished so well .When it comes to good whiskeys the Irish and the Scotts make amazing products .It's just so hard to get when there is so little supply and government fingers are in the pie !

    St Patrick was a Roman Catholic Ralphie because the Pope was his spiritual leader and he practiced the rites of the Catholic Church. Irish Catholicism may have had slight differences but these were mainly cultural. In fact one of the distinctive features of Irish Catholicism was private confession which they brought to Europe in their missions and which became universally accepted .

    Thanks for the review Ralfy! Just a quick note about Crested Ten. The Jameson range has gone through a bit of a makeover in the last year and Crested Ten has been put into a new bottle and is now simply called Crested. I've been reliably informed that the contents of the bottle haven't changed and thankfully, so far neither has the price. Cheers!

      . . . another age statement lost !

    • @ianconsidine8304
      @ianconsidine8304 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Crested Ten was always a weird one in that the Ten didn't refer to an age statement (although I believe originally it did but since the 90s it has been NAS). They kept the name for many years though without referring to it as Ten years old. I think the confusion and Crested being rolled out further afield than Ireland has forced them to finally change the name to reflect this fact!

    • @ericgilbert8114
      @ericgilbert8114 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The new Crested is pretty good so far. Just cracked tonight. Quite similar to Crested Ten. I found it more grain influenced, slightly two dimensional. But the potstill that is there is rich.

    cant believe how much water went in this 21 yo in this tasting.
    after ive enjoyed about 60% of my dram, i experiment with 78% Lindt chocolate inbetween sips.
    I love it. Was introduced to it a few years ago at wildaboutwhisky in South Africa. My first bottle came in a simple box, like the 12 and 15yo. Got another recently and i must say the packaging, like the one in the video, is special.
    in 2018 this is suddenly Jim Murray's 2nd finest whisky in the world - for whatever his opinion is worth.

    I'm not sure whether you've heard or not, but Jameson Crested TEN is now known as "Crested". Supposedly, only the name has changed, and not the gold within the bottle. Too bad it's not available in the States. =(

    All Redbreast is excellent quality, but I'd rather have the 12yr Cask Strength over this one. There is just something special about younger & potent Irish whiskey.

    Some additional information on the recipe of this whisky. I recently went to a whisky tasting where Billy Leighton, Head Blender at Middleton, was taking us through some standard and rare bottles of Redbreast. He said that the 21 years old is a blend of whiskies from 8 different casks: 1st fill sherry, 1st fill bourbon, 2nd fill sherry, 2nd fill bourbon, 3rd fill sherry, 3rd fill bourbon, 4th fill sherry, 4th fill bourbon. This recipe helps to build up different layers of complexity

    Hi Ralfy, new to your chanel and have been binge watching (not drinking) great stuff! I'm a Laphroaig fan but wanted to branch out a bit so i bought a Lagavulin 16 but i currently live in a hot place. The temp indoors regularly ranges from 20 to 35 degrees C. I'm confused about the malted barley. When malted, it produces an enzyme that converts starch to sugar for fermentation. In America, the distillers add malted barley to the beer so that this enzyme can convert the starch in the corn to sugar -- they don't malt the corn. Wouldn't this have the same effect on the unmalted barley added to the beer as you describe here?

    • @thewhiskybothy

      . . . to some degree, but it's the triple distillation that makes it !

    Life is too short to worry about the general ignorance of the masses... After all, its why we have scotch, right?
    I say this while preparing corned beef and potatoes for the family. Interestingly enough, my Catholic wife has received a special pardon from the pope to consume meat this Friday - so corned beef it is.
    Oh, and most people who put green dye in their beer - well, they probably dont take their drink all that seriously to begin with. So what's the harm in adding green dye? Its an experience worth adding to, in my opinion (my beer will not show green dye) - different strokes for different folks.
    Love the channel Ralfy, and thank you for posting TT footage too!

      Pretty sure it's Stalk and Barrel. Haven't had any myself though it is available here. It's a little expensive.

    $280 plus tax for this whisky, in British Columbia, Canada. Maybe if I win the lottery I will buy a bottle.

      @@h.nguyen9992 Doesn't surprise me. In Alberta you have a deregulated liquor market compared to the rest of Canada. In BC we really get screwed by the government.
