Fun fact: soldiers were expected to load and fire these 3 times a minute. They spent A LOT of time practicing this. Because 1 second would be life and death. And the Brown Bess that the British had were smoothbore, so they were incredibly inaccurate. The old saying "ready, aim, fire." is not entirely true. The real saying was "ready, level, fire." because their guns had no rifling and were pretty inaccurate.
Thing is, this isn't a musket. It's a rifle. (It's either a Baker or a Kentucky) Rifles has aim sights because of it's rifled barrel making it more accurate than an average musket.
No all muskets had sights despite what misconception tells you
People can say what they'd like; but I love the honesty in your channel. Do you always have success? No. Do you ONLY post videos where you have a flawless, successful hunt? NO! Not a single hunter/trapper I know has 100% positive results and they're not fooling anyone if they say they do lol

@@eh1918 that is one definition, not THE definition. And it isn’t even a good one. Hunting is a lifestyle, it is caring for nature, it is the joy of a sunset, it is the feeling when you are alone in the middle of nowhere. Yes, you also want to quarry. But that is not what defines success in hunting.
My dad has a 100% success rate that goes down to a couple things he doesnt hunt as much as he used to, and my uncle is a game warden and takes my dad hunting and he knows the spots to go to so that plays a massive role in it.

Iron sights are impossible for me to use once the sun goes down. So that may be why you shot high...
From my experience with some blackpowder rifles.... the point of impact of the ball changes the longer you leave it charged.
One rifle of mine, changes point of impact after charging and shooting it a couple of hours later.
Enough to miss the deer at 50 yards.
He's also flinching bad with the flintlock, pretty common problem with them, along with checking if its sighted, you should always clean the barrel between shots.

Yeah. I agree about cleaning between shots. That's what I do. Instead of spit or other kinda water, I use a mixture or rubbing alcohol (92%), and acetone (nail polish remover).
That mixture cleans out the powder fouling, and evaporates quickly. (leaving no water or any liquid residue that could contaminate the powder charge.
After seating the ball, I then clean the bore again (in front of the seated ball). I AM CURRENTLY USING AN INLINE MUZZLELOADER....Not a flint lock.
I get good groups, and my POI remaines zeroed at 100 yards, for a couple of weeks.
I tried it after about 8 months and the bullet (a sabot'd Hornady 45 caliber XTP jhp), hits dead on only dropping about two inches.
Not bad.

I'm a Civil War reenactor, and I own one of these(different lock mechanism, it's a percussion lock musket but the same general concept) beauties chambered in .58 caliber. Haven't been able to take it to the range, and I'm not a hunter(I get my fix by watching KG content, lol), but I love to see these guns get some attention. :)
Also, to make it easier to reload, soldiers back then would use paper cartridges containing everything you needed.

Just some advice, I would try different powder charges starting with the max load and down from there. Also how many times do you clean the barrel after you shoot? Muzzleloaders are fun but they require a lot of maintenance to get them shooting well, once you find the right combination they are deadly.
I hope kg dose see this because this all true and also I swear it looked like one of his mini ball bullet hit on its side and not with the nose

Thanks for the deer hunting content KG. Ive been watching for about 4 or 5 years and since i live in Middle Tennessee a lot of your tips on hunting have been super helpful even with a ton of hunting pressure ive been able to kill at least 1 deer every season
I was told by TWRA. Best place to hunt is between two different types of environments. Like a tall field of grass and blackberries and trees, water and reeds. Undergrowth old and growth. Keep the wind in your face. Stay out there!

@@jakeevans8819are flintlock muskets rifle rifled? Rifled means having grooves in the barrel for ammo guideance right? If that is the true meaning its only counts for muntions. A little .50 ball is considerd a true bullet while modern “bullets” are called ammunition.

1. It would be much harder to use a ramrod in a rifles barrel, as you have to basically have enough flrce as the gasses sending thr round out.
2. at about 19:28 you can see the rounds made for rifles have keyholed, which woulden’t happen on a rifle.

I treat flint locks like bows when hunting and shoot low. Deer duck when they haer the bow and because there is a little delay between the hammer hitting the flint to setting off the round which they hear and instantly duck.

You had a classic case called the flinches. We hunt with flintlocks here in pa after Christmas and we always call them flinchlocks for the new guys because you can flinch when you shot because of the slight delay

@@myacidninjatheamazing1025 it’s possible on that account. It’s all really on how you adjusted the sights when you are sighting it in. My gun I don’t I can hit a target at 100 yards but I have my iron sights adjusted for a reason. It’s like any gun. You just to adjust your sights

Kendall, I have been hunting with a flintlock for years and I may have a reason your practice groups are as spread out as they are. You’re using a “store bought flintlock”. The ignition timing on production flintlocks is way slower than a custom built rifle. Custom built rifles with a tuned lock will have the ball out the barrel before your body can react to the ignition flash. Hang in there!

If you want to keep that flintlock for years to come, clean it after you shoot it. Do not put it up until it has been cleaned properly. Black Powder and Pyrodex are very corrosive to metal and gun barrels.
