Here are a couple of tips for when you build your bigger tank later on. :) When I lived in Haiti and had a cistern under my house to hold water, I learned that the best cisterns had a couple of features. 1) a small, lower area where the pump can go, this way you can get the most of your water out of the tank. (When you have a foot of water in the tank but the pump can't suck it out, it's useless.) 2) Have the bottom of the the tank slope either outwards or inwards. This way sediment will settle to one area and make clean-out easier. Your tank looks great!! Good work. :D
The other very useful addition is a length of flexible hose on the pump intake, with a float tied to the other end of the hose so that the end of the hose hangs a few inches below the water surface. This is the cleanest water in the tank - you avoid any floating debris, but you're as far away as possible from silt and sediment slowly sinking to the bottom. As the water level drops, the float keeps the end of the hose on station just below the surface. When you get to that last bit of the water, it's probably a good idea to use that for watering plants and find something else for humans and animals to drink. All the sludge you've been avoiding drinking has settled either onto the main floor of the tank or into the sump, and if you can it's actually worth washing it out from time to time.
Great job! You can calculate how much rainwater you get from your by multiplying the average rainfall in (mm) x the area of the roof (m2). Quick Google search says ave rainfall in Algarve in 500mm. If your roof is say 130m2, then you should get 500 x 130 = 65,000 litres! Make sure you have a good overflow on the tank. Always love your videos - much more interesting to diy! Cheers to you from Australia, we have water tanks everywhere! Lol! Hugs to Will & Cris😊
I cant believe how little faith I had in you on this particular project - I was fairly sure this was going to be a struggle/disaster. So glad to be proven very very wrong. What a massive asset to your property for a fairly minor investment (and some sweat equity). You absolutely nailed it mate.
Andy you are a perfectionist, and it shows in the quality of the product from start to finish. Looking forward to seeing all the work to get your home ready for you to move in and relax!
This was a great project! You always do a beautiful job. The band stand will be such a great feature, I like that you have form and function going with this water tank👍👍😃
Andy I watched you build the water tank from the start. But to see it finished in this complete episode was very interesting, and enjoyable. You are a perfectionist and it shows in this build. The terracotta looks good. ❤️🇨🇦
Love it. Good choise on the color change. Just for general info...1mm of rain per square meter equals one liter of water. Thanks for your time, the house will be done before you know it!!!
That is one handsome piece of work you did there... I admire your get it done attitude. I was wondering where you'd got and yet waiting longer and seeing how hard you've been working it was worth the wait .. well done Andrew... place is looking all green again! :) Something about Mediterranean climates and terracotta coloured, it has a lovely earthy warm feel...
Nice job, and definitely go for the bandstand idea. It'll be such a feature of your new house and garden, plus some useful shade in the summer heat. I hope the house roof rebuild isn't too stressful.
Been following along from the start, love how it’s turned out. Especially like the terracotta color. Looking forward to seeing an update on how the house is coming along.
That took a lot of effort but it shows. It's a. masterpiece. The terracotta is perfect, good choice. Would be nice to have a simple wooden pergola over it & grow some grape vines. Well done Andy.
Can't believe you've reached nearly 90k subs I've been a subscriber since you started . You are so eloquent and come across so well on camera . we live in Spain Andalusia/murcia and are desperate for rainfall, I have a Stevensons shelter and recorded only 35.1 mm of rain in 2 years ,the last meaningful rain was in September 2019 during Gota Fria .take care and keep the vids up
I agree the terracotta colour does look better than the grey. I think a bandstand there is going to look great. Loving watching it all come together xx
I will say if you make another tank, have a think about making up a few concrete forms in the shape of an arc, include a 'mortice and tenon' on each end. It could save a lot of material moving. Then rig up a simple pulley to get stuff in the hole. Nice bit of handywork so far.
Super job! Multi purpose too. Love your commitment and self motivation for your projects. Can't wait to see the bandstand or whatever it is you decide to place on top of the cistern.
Lovely result. If i can offer some suggestions for a bigger tank... If you build it next to the house you could continue the block work up above ground and just drop your gutter into it. That would give you a lot more capacity. With regard to rendering inside the tank. You can spray cement really quickly when rendering and the guns are remarkably cheap. Something to explore. The house i live in has a 30000 litre tank sunk into the front garden. It was badly built in that the builder didn't take into account the weight of the water. About 30 metric tons. So the bottom slab broke off when it filled and the tank is now useless. You might want to consider that when sizing the slab for your next one...
I have been looking for your posts since the start of the year. It is good to see that you are still going well all the best from down under. I'm a retired builder. You do things differently but, the outcome is always excellent. I'm going to pinch a few ideas from you.
Hi Andy , Love it…superb appeal and commitment to complete. I just bought a 5,000 ltr tank for my farm..(poly); I have great deal of appreciation for what you’ve achieved.. all the best to you 🇦🇺
This is incredibly inspiring! We have been bouncing the idea around of a cement cistern, but pouring into form doesn’t get us that excited. This… This gets us excited. Definitely something we could do! Thanks for sharing!
Yay, thanks Andrew. Been awaiting your next video and you didn't disappoint. I watched you do it over the other videos. Enjoyed seeing it all in one too. Boy, it looks amazing fully finished 🤗 So excited to hear you'll be in the house for the end of February. Can't wait for the next vidoes showing that progress. You must be thrilled how it's all coming together. Take care Andrew. Till next time, cheers. 🥂
Hi missed seeing no video from you last week but worth the wait. It looks fantastic and great it's dual purpose. Agree, the terracotta is better than the grey. Good luck with all your projects and look forward to your next video, as always
Well done Andrew! Loved your time lapse on the water cistern. Looks like a beautifully decorated cake with nuts around it…. Good enough to eat. Love the idea of making the top a place where you can relax. Gosh you are a hard and talented worker. Thank you for sharing with us. Very entertaining. Love it!
Excellent job, well done . Love the area , my family lives closer to Lagoa and Portimão. Also we still have my grandparents farm near Sao Marcos da Serra . Keep up the good job .
Such a great watch I've enjoyed all the episodes I've watched so far after finding your channel over Christmas. Moving to the algarve is something as a family we keep mulling over and is hopefully a dream we will pursue one day. Very disillusioned with England currently and this is a dream we hope to one day make true. In the meantime I'll enjoy watching your work overthere and look forward to seeing the house rebuild. Good luck with everything Andy from another Andy 😂
Andrew this looks amazing! What a beautiful watertank! It looked like you made a giant perefectly round cake with terracotta frosting haha. I really enjoy seeing the precision and the care while doing such heavy work, like smoothing the surface of the concrete etc. It also showed this time how much experience you got from building the well. At least to me it seemed more effortless this time around.
I have seen some of your other projects and they were great. I have enjoyed this house and setting much more. Your positivity and friendly demenor make this channel a favorite. cheering you on from Texas
Bravo! Very impressive. I admire your craftsmanship, quality of the work and stick-to-it-ness in a superb result and example of what a man with a plan can accomplish on his own… and at a very approachable expense. I’m in the States and much older than you - I share your determination and self-belief to get most anything done when you set your mind to the task. 300 days of sunshine… maybe I should consider spending the rest of life in your part of the world.

Very constructive advice

I swear to God, Andrew, an absolute work of art! The gazebo will be lovely. Water collection and shade. Awesome! 🙂👍👍🇨🇦

Or you can ask Chat GPT and it will give you the exact amount.
Not the area of the roof but the footprint of the roof.
Admirable! You really stick to it and don't cut corners. BRAVO!
With some sun, 2 dogs, a cement mixer and a bucket of skill; you can accomplish anything. Fantastic start to finish video Andrew 👍
I cant believe how little faith I had in you on this particular project - I was fairly sure this was going to be a struggle/disaster. So glad to be proven very very wrong. What a massive asset to your property for a fairly minor investment (and some sweat equity). You absolutely nailed it mate.

That cement mixer has paid its way!
Fantastic!
Amazed at your skills, knowledge and creativity.
Cisterna outside looks great. It fits into the surroundings perfectly. No gazebo/bandstand needed. A beautiful job.
