6:08 A friend of mine got towed one day in Portugal. The parking lot he was towed from is a known trapping area for foreigners. He found out after talking to some locals. He never contacted the towing company but instead called his camper van which had a gps tracker installed. It reported located the next town over at some industrial estate. He hitched a ride to the place the gps reported and found his van on the yard of a towing company. He scoped out the area very thoroughly, making sure no camera's were present and noticed the yard had no guard on duty in the evening, a single camera was at the office building where clients collecting their vehicle. The camera was installed in the building to see who was ringing the doorbell so an employee of the company could remotely open the door to the yard. The main gate to the yard had a magnetic loop inbedded in the concrete which sensed a vehicle waiting in front of it. The gate would open automatically so the vehicle could leave the yard. My friend waited until the yard went quiet and he was able to climb the fence unseen, walk up to his own van, start it and drive it to the automatic gate which opened without delay. He got away and was able to enjoy his time in Portugal without any issues. Several weeks past without any word from either the towing company or law enforcement until he tried to leave Portugal. He was stopped by border patrol for a routine check and that's when the border agents found the police report the van had been "stolen" several weeks prior. The tow company had filled a stolen vehicle report after discovering the van was gone thinking it had been stolen. My friend told agents he found his van gone fro the parking lot he left it, and was able to track it down using the gps tracker. He told police he went to the reported place to find out the van was towed by some tow company and found it sitting at the towing company's office not mentioning he actually jumped the fence or the automatic opening gate. He was asked to wait while the local police figured out who actually owned the van which was of course my friend. After a couple of hours it was clear who owned the van and my friend was free to leave. The police officer doing the investigation said he could not be prosecuted for theft of anything you actually owned. Thanks T and B. I was absolutely gutted for you, when you had the T4 broken into. Seeing B so upset, was horrible! Along with wireless CCTV I've got an after market alarm and immobiliser, with window break detection and proximity alarm. I had my van on the drive less than a week (Peugeot Boxer) -replaced the T4, and it got broken into. My hands were forced to buy the alarm set up straight away! Which I'd not budgeted in initially. Some great kit you have! Thanks for the video! ❤
I also use motion detection and door/windows sensors that would let me know if they breaking in real time. I also have really nice safe that is hidden and bolted to the van frame.
The slam locks are useless if someone breaks or cuts open your window. The steering wheel lock is useless. It can be defeated in a minute. You need to get a floor safe and have it bolted down or welded to your floor. Thieves are not going to waste too much time trying to get that thing open. You are most concerned about the valuables in that safe. Everything else can be replaced through insurance.
Sorry for you and your disappointment re living in the Alaskan wilderness - however from our points of view their loss our continued gain. Cheers guys welcome back to vanlife xx
So sorry you were violated, and went through such a horrible ordeal!💔😘 Your inspiration, and informative video's are much appreciated and such a blessing. Thank you for sharing such vital, and life saving information to your viewers. Thank you the most for letting your love, and light shine through.❤☕
I remember your break in. What everybody dreads, apart from going home on the plane. It wasn't for you anyway. You've got your land. In 2 weeks, I'm going to my land in Cyprus. There's a house but it's already 30 years old and cracking. The tenants moved out so no electricity and water when I get there but I've got a space blanket. And a sleeping bag. No wife, no kids, just memories of better times. I want to sell it and buy a camper van. That's my dream. Great stuff on Alaska but was it your dream? You're great with what you've got and remember, these are your best days. Make everyone count.
When cruising the Caribbean/Gulf of Mexico counties with Key West as my base, I had a pair of solar powered motion activated lights mounted on each side of the mast 4 ft above the deck. Another was mounted on the boom rest facing astern. This woke me up several times that I saw another boat go away without lights. Bad guys??? You could mount these one above every door that even when you come back to your van at night, you would feel safer with a light to get into the van. Also that when somebody else gets near your van????
Thank you for NOT getting into the "gas attack myth", that I read so frequently about. Very refreshing and to the point! :-) Safe travels to and within Canada - you're going to love it.
I completely understand having a CC camera to keep an eye on any animals, as well as a blue tooth thermometer (perhaps even more important when leaving a live animal in a closed vehicle). But as a security device, it seems a bit useless. Triggered by motion, you would get an alert if someone had broken into your van, certainly. But as most vehicle ransacks last literally one to five minutes, the thief would be long gone by the time you could return to the van unless you were mere feet away.
As always, a great video, and helpful tips. Naughty naughty! Taking pictures of police (depending on circumstances) was made illegal by a 2015 "Citizens' Security Law" the purpose was to protect police officers and their families from harassment. I believe this was supposed to stop TV channels showing the faces of the police in high profile arrests, and to stop any backlash that may occur. It's a grey area, and now all the police say "under no circumstances can you film them" I don't think general policing was intended to be covered by this law, but they use it anyway, and God help you if you don't adhere to it. Sorry this is a bit long, but it may help other readers going to Spain. Good luck in Canada and the USA
I was so gutted for you two tonight and as I’ve already said I believe that being pescatarians was definitely an unspoken black mark against you but hey you have your home and better still you can see the world in it also you have your base in Portugal, I think Alaska as nice as it is would tie you down too much.. So hold your head high and live the pretty amazing life you lead.. Gxx
totally agree. contestant-based shows often show a degree of wicked thinking: "let's put these alternative lifestyle people into the mix and see how long they last". But it wasn't even entertaining. They didn't expect you to do well. They certainly didn't give you a fair crack of the whip.
Initially gutted and for sure you were the best... Let's face it you have lived off grid for the last 5 yrs and have matured a lot faster than most your age . But then I really believed you might have been torn as you love Potugal and your land ! And your travels where ever, when ever with whom ever ( meeting up with similar van lifers). It could of stifled you without initially realising it. I've lost interest in the programme now... as I can't get my head round one couple if they shine during one challenge then that's done and dusted...didn't they read anything about your background before hand? Excited to share your travels through Canada... I leave in August to live off grid in a beautiful part of Ontario. Happy travels . You guys also make me giggle so much , great sense of humour...I'm from the Wirral so appreciate it lol Andy xxx
On any windows in the back of the van have a piece of 2×2 inch steel mesh on the inside of each window. If it's painted/powder coated black first it's quite discrete especially if you back windiws are tinted and you don't really notice it from inside but no one can then break a window and climb in. A thought that i had though, if you make the living area of your van more secure make sure it doen't stop you getting out in a hurry if there's an emergancy.
Hi , I am Angus MacArthur from Scotland, bean a TH-cam watcher for a few years , never subscribed but tonight I have, love your content and footage, just remember this I’m a fisherman who loves van life and have cycled the whole lot of Scotland, if you want to come again let me know as I actually own Scotland as a wild camper / cyclist and fisherman lol, if I can help in any way , I will , love you both.
Security is one area I worry about ( I even worry about your security). I've been looking forward to this video. I have a secure lockable box and steering lock and also a sort of panic alarm siren that we can activate. I've seen pedal locks and handbrake locks and people turning and locking the drivers seat but in reality are you going to put those on just to nip into the supermarket. So CCTV and phone alerts make sense. Great video.
Get really crafty and put a cctv camera or even two in vegetation outside the van overlooking the van you could even make your own tree stump on a spike with a cleverly concealed camera within, with room for a battery pack.
This is so good to know thank you brother and sister for sharing this information for it good to know that way may God keep on blessing you both that way throughout you journey around the world in a beautiful van of yours you hat way
I have to look into this camera. We use a lockbox too and have insurance on our possessions. If they want to get inside there is always a way, for us it is making it very difficult for them to take stuff. You learn from your mistakes as you have undoubtedly shown.
I think it would be great to build some of these items into the van during the build out process. Makes it harder for thieves to see/get to. Secret cupboards, cameras, etc. If I was to live in your van alone, I would chain the door handles together so they are impossible to physically open, along with jimmy up a cabin box system so even if they smash the windows, they couldn’t get into the cab itself. Finally I would chain the sliding door on the inside so it would be impossible to slide open. I’m all about those locks and chains 😂 If you’re driving through Alberta, please please please let us know - meet up!!! 🙏🏼🙏🏼
BBC editing on the program intro gave it away as we saw both Pete & Jayne on Sunday and Tina & Chris in the OSI plane last week. I am gutted you did not get through to even see Osi mountain. You 2 guys were perfect to take on the Homestead and the Owners have missed a trick. You should at least drive to Alaska in the Van and then go see it for yourselves I'm sure you would be welcome guests to the Winners.
I grew up on a farm and we had these bird blasters which was shotgun load without the pellets and set to fire off every 30 minutes in the corn fields. I had a few left with a ton of rounds so that is what I use during the night when I am sleeping. I set it up on the roof and it fires every 30 minutes so if anyone is snoopy around they are run off in a hurry when it fires a round. So good for pesty animals that come looking to eat you in the night and those lousy crooks.
So, where are you landing? I am going to assume you are coming into Halifax, NS - Eamon and Bec left from here. Anyway, we live in NS, if you need a place to stay to explore or need anything, we are here. Love watching you.
Hi you two. Out of all the contestants you had the perfect qualities and experience. But heyho I know you were upset at the time but having visited Canada for the last 10 years I’ve experienced 40 degrees in summer with mossies eating me from 8pm and minus 40 degrees in winter with snow that lasts up to 6 months..24/7 365 in the middle of nowhere phew.. would have taken some doing. I’m more than happy with my month in Canada and 6 months on the Algarve. ( don’t forget your mossie nets for your next adventure)
Such a shame you guys didn't get up there. Out of all the couples you guys where probably where most ideal for it. Still young and financially it seems you are sorted already so no worries there. Would of been great watching you guys do it as well. Security wise those solar pir house lights fitted with stick on magnets are great stuck on the sides of the van when you're parked up. People will think twice about getting close to your van
I just love your van it really looks like it feels like home. 🥰 I’m happy to see your so safe with your security system that was a really smart idea. I’m sorry for that terrible experience you had to go through with your other van. It feels like such a violation. 😕 Your good now I believe God willing. Thanks for sharing your trip. All your videos and the photography is just amazing! ❤️ Sorry I don’t have any tips but I think you’ve pretty much covered everything. Safe travels have lots of fun! 🥳 The only thing I would think your van would need is maybe one of those great outdoor showers. I could do without the toilet but I would definitely need a shower. It’s an OCD thing. LOL! 🥰 p.s. I’ve always wanted to let you know that in the US when you refer to something as homely it usually means it’s plain and a little bit ugly. LOL! Out here when we talk about our homes we say it looks Homie. Funny how some words have different meanings in other place’s. Have a wonderful week! 🥰

Actually, the device you mentioned will be removed by the garage people because for most kinds of work they have to do they need the OBD port to connect their device to check parameters of your car. But for the travel time across the Atlantic, it's a fine idea to have it.
This Northern Alberta is looking forward to seeing your journey through Canada. Love your videos and your attitudes. Keep up the awesome videos and stay safe!
Disappointing end to Win the Wilderness but you did good! Enjoy having the freedom to roam and being able to drive up to your property in Portugal! Will continue to follow your travels 😊 (From another Brummie).
old fashion car alarm works OK It's plenty loud and could work with central locking. It is easy way to install standard house lock in sliding doors- which makes them impossible to open with any amount of brute force. And most important tip: older van. Its better, cheaper, more reliable and doesn't look so tasty.. needs some courage to swim against the streem tho ;)
So sad... but keep in mind you still can travel the world and won’t be in 1 place as isolated as oc-mountain would be... enjoy your travels. I stopped for a while, because my dad past away and have a stick and bricks now, but will keep my lovely Zelda and she will escort me on every time we can travel Europe. Need to extend my online work and who knows... but for you guys enjoy Canada, USA, Central America and for the best part South America.... I fell in love with Colombia, take your time to explore the countries if you can... and see your adventures....
So sorry for you. I feel like the editing of the previous episodes of the show hadn't featured you guys so much. I'm selfishly happy that your travelling is not going to be coming to an end. Continue with your fantastic vlogs
Love your necklace, Bea. Gorgeous!! You have done great in Alaska, too. You will LOVE spending the summer there, too. Soo many travellers have been broken into and huge $$ stolen. So upsetting.
the car tracker is a good idea, but since it's plugged into the OB2 port, anyone could uplug and disable if they get in. I'm sure there is a version to get that is wired into the vehicle that would work in a similar fashion.
I keep a OneNote notebook with pictures and serial numbers etc for all equipment with copies of receipt and warranties etc plus insurances. Keep it on line so you can access if eg phone stolen. Don’t forget to password protect the book and NOT using biometric on your phone so that details etc safe.
So glad you guys bounced back stronger than ever! I hate that theft happened to you and your van, they didn't have to trash the place on top of the robbery. #EnjoyCanada

Very informative video. In regards to a lock box how can you secure the box to the van so that a thief doesn't simply walk off with the entire lock box?
Am delighted that I have an old DHL van that has slam locks included! When I get solar I’m defo getting the collapsible ladder! I’ve got the bulkhead covered as well with a little hole to get through but I just admit I haven’t tried yet 😂
I didn't thank you guys would make it in Alaska, based on your present travel plans. I very much enjoyed watching it though, hope you enjoyed the experience as much as I did. Buen viaje.
Thank you so much for this post guys, (and many others that I've found a great help),since following you around 6mths ago I am now an avid watcher, this is due to a number of reasons, I'm converting a van, your skill level is around the same as mine, and you seem like very approachable and down to earth people (although with a bottomless wallet) ;-) a couple of questions if you have the time, does the kitchen leave cooking smells in the van and does your fridge create any excessive heat into the driving area. Thanks again for the time and enjoyment you give to us.
I never really thought about the bulkhead as a security feature but I suppose it is. Breaking the windows and getting full access is easy but if the bulkhead is there and you have deadlocks, armour-plates etc it's probably too much work for an opportunist to get in the back. I think I might look into some sort of Security Window Film, an alarm as well as a safe too.

Using blink, thanks for tips
I also use motion detection and door/windows sensors that would let me know if they breaking in real time. I also have really nice safe that is hidden and bolted to the van frame.
The slam locks are useless if someone breaks or cuts open your window. The steering wheel lock is useless. It can be defeated in a minute. You need to get a floor safe and have it bolted down or welded to your floor. Thieves are not going to waste too much time trying to get that thing open. You are most concerned about the valuables in that safe. Everything else can be replaced through insurance.
Instead of using wood to block the cabin through, consider steel. Great Chanel guys, your quite brave. Love the adventuring spirit.
Very good point about the ladder, I think getting a ladder on the side of your van is quite risky.
"Someone robbed our van."
*Furiously installs missile launchers*
I really like your kitchen.
Being tied to that place in the middle of nowhere would have been hell - you have freedom to go where you want - that's more important........
Best security ever two trained protection German Shepherds
Thank you for NOT getting into the "gas attack myth", that I read so frequently about. Very refreshing and to the point! :-)
Safe travels to and within Canada - you're going to love it.
Is the second video about van robbery in Spain!! Good to be cautious everywhere, thanks for all the tips
That's so horrible that your old van was ransacked! I'm really glad you have numerous lines of security now. Great tips! 💞
But as most vehicle ransacks last literally one to five minutes, the thief would be long gone by the time you could return to the van unless you were mere feet away.
footage for the police?
@@shelleypeppard4694 Excellent point, thank you.
One vanlifer suggested a big can of bear spray, a machete and a smile (if someone is trying to break in while home).
haha best laugh of my morning 😁😁😁
Bear spray DOES NOT WORK ON HUMANS. Please use pepper spray, or wasp spray.
@@valerief1231 It was meant to be a little funny when KombiLife said it. I was just passing on the humor.
My friend terry the tazer is handy.
I really like you guys alot!
What show were they on?
@@hollyrestrick5115 BBC's Win the Wilderness: Alaska
Useful tips, thanks. That camera might be a good idea for our van, especially with our cat in there as well. Thanks for sharing
These are AMAZING!!! Somehow you guys just made me feel like I’m driving around completely naked. Gotta step it up! Sending these ideas to Ladi now!!
Ah glad to hear they’re useful for you guys!
I agree, i just left in my van n have no good measures in place except a taser n pepper spray N chains n locks for my kayak. Hmmmm
Found your channel from Eamon and Becs, thanks guys!
Liked this video, thanks
Hi , I am Angus MacArthur from Scotland, bean a TH-cam watcher for a few years , never subscribed but tonight I have, love your content and footage, just remember this I’m a fisherman who loves van life and have cycled the whole lot of Scotland, if you want to come again let me know as I actually own Scotland as a wild camper / cyclist and fisherman lol, if I can help in any way , I will , love you both.
Thanks so much 🙏🏻
Security is one area I worry about ( I even worry about your security).
So many great ideas!! Love them all and will definitely adopt some of them. ❤️
Thanks for sharing your information! I very impressed with the amount of help you give! Your cats are so cute 🥰
Love watching you.
what a lovely offer x
Bee: There are a hundred ways to skin a cat...
Me: Where is Gingey? DOES ANYONE HAVE EYES ON GINGEY?
I always shudder if anybody uses that phrase. My decades with animal rescue cause my mind to race at such trigger words!
@Jeff somersby What? Bee is the name of the lady in the video you're commenting on
100 ways to skin a cat, pretty sure the cat would hate all 100 of them lmao
I'm so glad you two are staying safe!! I like the thinking behind the bulkhead....nice job. Theo... OMG I LOVE your T-shirt..hahah!! Blessed travels. GREAT video, I love these types of videos.
Left my first ever comment on your last video. Wish you well on your Alaskan adventure !!! Looking forward to watching that tomorrow ! Best of luck you two!
Chris
I,'m glad you stepped-up your secutity measures...BE CAREFU L.. 🙏👣
You can store your stuff in a locker somewhere, don't know if bus and train stations still have them.
Those lockers are magnets for thieves and easy to break into.
I will definitely put a lock on every single drawer just in case I park in areas that are somewhat remote. And a motion detection alarm
old fashion car alarm works OK It's plenty loud and could work with central locking. It is easy way to install standard house lock in sliding doors- which makes them impossible to open with any amount of brute force.
And most important tip: older van. Its better, cheaper, more reliable and doesn't look so tasty.. needs some courage to swim against the streem tho ;)
Just watched episode 4 and I’m gutted !! You did so well 😀
Ladder-chucks LOL!
So sad... but keep in mind you still can travel the world and won’t be in 1 place as isolated as oc-mountain would be... enjoy your travels.
You need some of that clear film or laminate film to go over your glass windows to make harder to get in the front cabin windows.
good job guys
What an Amazing Video, I wish I could get to Canada and meet you guys, so excited for you. Really good tips on Van security... Safe Travels you guys!!
Oh the break in looked like a nightmare_ watched tonight's show and I had a tear in my eye :(
They didn't give you sufficient air-time. That spoke volumes. D&R made some seriously wrong choices. Well, that's their lookout! Canada here we come... hugs from Devon x
Great video thanks for sharing, can't wait for you to come to the US!! ✌️💕🚐🐾🤗
Nice smiley couple! Thank you for all your tips. I live in VA…thinking of getting a Van…!? Keep in touch…you could park on my street when travelling through DC!,,
Clear security film or slight tint the side cab windows to stop the smash and grab.
Nice tips
Very informative video. In regards to a lock box how can you secure the box to the van so that a thief doesn't simply walk off with the entire lock box?
Good tips. I have just tried climbing through the bulkhead window into my cab... and failed. Time to get the angle grinder out, it needs to be bigger.
Buen viaje.
Hi guys, new subscriber from Canada....ya can’t come to Canada without coming to Newfoundland.....we have so much to offer....
Sorry you didn't make it to the mountain but I'm looking forward to seeing you Canada trip it will be great x
Thank you so much for this post guys, (and many others that I've found a great help),since following you around 6mths ago I am now an avid watcher, this is due to a number of reasons, I'm converting a van, your skill level is around the same as mine, and you seem like very approachable and down to earth people (although with a bottomless wallet) ;-)
a couple of questions if you have the time, does the kitchen leave cooking smells in the van and does your fridge create any excessive heat into the driving area.
I think I might look into some sort of Security Window Film, an alarm as well as a safe too.
great video useful tips and info. will be travelling alone in spring. now I will get some safety gadgets. thanks.
Super cool video...we got robbed in Spain and everything was gone..The camera looks pretty nice...thanks for sharing!
