You’re right. I think we’d be better off if we were a little more humble about ignorance. I’m using ignorance by its definition which means lack of knowledge. It doesn’t mean dumb or stupid. It’s sad that I have to add that but people tend to think I’m saying they’re dumb. I’ve been plumbing for 20 years on top of learning many other things along the way. However I don’t know it all. I’m always learning. I’m more than willing to admit when I don’t know something. I don’t mind telling a customer that I don’t know and I’ll have to either figure it out or research. I don’t mind calling customer support. I think if those of us that are relied upon to teach the next generation were more humble about ignorance then those learning wouldn’t be as scared to ask questions.

This and tons of basic math can be so helpful. The thing I always teach after this is when trying to find half double the bottom number. I’m a plumber and there are so many ways math can makes things easier. The offset formula is the main one people think off with plumbing but the best math truck in plumbing is subtraction. I see people trying to hold up a pipe and measure. I’ll tell them just to measure from the ground to where the piece will terminate and then measure from the starting point to the ground and subtract to give them the cut measurement. I see too many people trying to hold pipe and fittings and eyeball things when math would make it so much easier.
PS two tricks with a tape measure is how to find half of any mixed number measurement or subtract any mixed number measurement. If you need half of 6’ 9 7/8”. Just fold your tape with the end lined up to that number and the center line of the bend is half. To subtract fold your tape so the end is lined up to the big number then find your smaller number and the measurement on the other side inline with it is the difference
