I've been gone for a few days and haven't published a video in a while. Let's catch up on what's happening on the farm and talk about something we need to be truthful about.

Farming is not a 9-5 job. It's 24/7 365 days a year, and 366 days on a leap year. If you are going to a wedding and a cow comes on calving, you stay with the cow. It's a huge commitment that many just do understand.
So many don't get it because they've never lived it. To them, chicken comes from the grocery store...or worse, door dash.
I can't believe it! I had to wait until 31:25 into a 32:15 video before we get the "skinny jeans" throw down! LOL

I agree with your last statement immensely. I try to convey that to my friends and family all the time. And they just don't seem to understand. Wish that was in a shorts form to share so people can see that come from other farmers as well.

On our farm here in Virginia we've been asked to do a lot of things and go places but we also have to turn down. I have always explain that someone needs to be at the farm.

Well said conclusion, 30 colonies and 35 hens, 30+ fruit trees, and a very large garden, we both have day jobs as well. It is definitely a lifestyle not a side hustle for sure. Toss in two or three markets a week and you are booked for the whole summer.
My wife is a breeder of marans if all different colors. You can actually continually make your eggs darker if you breed roosters from dark eggs to hens that were hatched from dark eggs.
She has all different shades of brown from the standard copper to the deepest rich colored brown and speckled
About dang time! LOL I have been worried about you and Saundra to the point of sending a message just to let you know I was worried about you and hoping it was just life keeping you busy. I know you don't know me from Adam, but I have been binge watching you from your first video for the last month or so and am now up to last year. So, I feel like I know you both. So good to see you back. No kidding, I have had to resort to watching Cross Timbers Bison - which is really pretty cool, but there is nothing like you, Saundra, and your farm. So glad to see you back.

The butterflies you showed at the end are not Monarchs I believe they are yellow swallowtails. Still beautiful, Monarchs are orange and black.

They’re not excuses, they’re reasons! Another thing that happened to me when I had all my animals (& being an animal lover), I really couldn’t enjoy time away from the farm because of worrying and missing my animals! You’re gonna have some big chops off those sows 🤣

I don't have a partner so I go pretty much nowhere. Once or twice a year I might go for 8- hrs to overnight but I have to have someone come in and check on stuff and do the chores (usually my daughter) but I haven't left the farm for more than 6 hrs for over two years. I don't mind cause I love my farm and my life.💖
My wife and I are 65 and getting ready to sell our home and get a little property. Wife said she is not quiting one job just to stay another one. All the animals look great, vegetables mouth watering, BUT. Do not want and physically unable to sustain the commitment. We will build a farmette.. lol
Im a Chuck fan. I'm here to watch what he has going on in his life.

I would have been a great candidate for this lifestyle. I don't like to leave home and have had to hunt excuses not to go anywhere most of my life. This would have been perfect. LOL
Black, blue and splash marans breeding is cool. If i recall coorrectly... Black x black = black. Splash x splash = splash. Black x splash = blue. Blue x blue = 50% blue, 25% splash, 25% black.
I've had alot of different breeds of chickens and my favorites personality wise and the color was the Speckled Sussex's. My best Momma chickens was my Silkies and my best layers were a cross between my Blue Orpington Rooster and my Silkies they layed alot of reg. sized eggs for me and they looked really cook but the buff and cheeks on the head and again super friendly like their Dad. LOL
Life gets in the way and things happen we understand

Thanks for being honest. There is not a lot of that on you tube. I agree with you it is a commitment and not just a fun and stress free. You also show how fulfilling it is. We are just starting and it is something you really need to have passion for.
You need to knock down your queen cells or remove and put them in your incubator and hatch them and put them in a breeder box. If you don't then you'll just continue having your hive swarm. You 'll also need to give them a super because they're out of room. Bees need room and mite treatment. Other than that, you're good.
Un-related comment. Im @ 3weeks on 75 CC from hoovers with a 7% loss rate. So far so good.
Ive kived on a farm all my kife n know well what ur saying . I now live alone n have around 75 laying chickens n from November to end of February i had teeth problems n it was tough getting out for two eks n a row feeding . Its rewarding but not easy by no means . Enjoy ur videos .
Hey Y'all!! LOVE your channel! We live on 2 acres in Lower AL. I was medically retired from the USAF when my lower back had to fused. I was a medic for 6 yrs & computer network for 8yrs. Do you mind sharing what you do in EMS? We had a 1000sq ft garden but I had to go home to Nebraska to help my folks so now I get to start over. I'm thinking of changing to raised beds. We want to get egg layers, 12 meat birds, a trio of rabbits & i'm going to start my worm farm again.
Small farm = small animals.

It's been years since I've been on vacation. If I leave the property I try not to be gone longer than 4 hrs.. I'm up at 3:00 and out the door usually by 4 a.m. I'd love to have bees I'm allergic to them I have to carry an EpiPen with me my trees are filled with bees right now

That does not sound like bright and early but early and dark. I choose the excuse behind door number 2.
You don't need to apologize for not giving the total picture in your videos. Someone once said; "All movie making is life with all the boring parts cut out." You cannot convey all that happens on a farm in 30-minute videos. If someone expects you to then they are the unrealistic ones who need to be making the apologies. I am delighted to watch those portions of what you do which you choose to share. Thanks for sharing.

I grew up on a farm. A commercial egg/cotton farm. I think you could share every single minute of your day, but people won't understand until THEY have to do it day in and day out. I have family that claim to understand, then get frustrated when we're late to xyz holiday get together because something went wrong. There's definitely creators that are, probably not intentionally being misleading, but are. "Homesteading" by definition of social media content being created isn't farming. It's a hobby. I'm happy to see people getting more connected with nature and their food. I'm not dissing it at all, it's WONDERFUL! However, it's not the same as watching your entire livelihood go down the drain due to drought and know you can't pay back the crop loan. Or having to beg for help to get to go to a loved one's funeral. That's the reality of farming.

Just to be comprehensive, I will accept all of Chuck's "excuses".
I grew up on a farm but haven't done cattle since I was about 14. I'm 46 now. Not trying to be critical cause I see everyone on TH-cam with cows that are absolutely covered in flies. It's not just you guys. I'm just curious if this is normal now or has something to do with the part of the world? Our cows never had it this bad. The only thing we did with them was a little hanging pad thing over the gateway into the barn/feeding area and we put a little linseed oil on it. That would rub down their back when they walked under it and they almost never had any flies.
That, and billions of birds have been killed over the years, due to poisons in their environment, feral or roaming cats, etc. Those birds would have eaten trillions of insects.
Perfectly normal to have flies. Especially in the springtime.
@@robertensign8786 It was NOT normal to have flies like that 35 years ago. That's my point. I grew up on a cattle farm and everyone I knew were cattle farmers. I spent my entire childhood on cattle farms. Never seen anything so bad as what I see on YT channels with cattle now.
@@alan30189 Man I wonder if that's part of it for real. That's crazy if so. I'm talking like our cows might have 10 flies around a cow and only in the worst part of the year. On YT every farm I see with cows the cows are covered in THOUSANDS of flies each.
@@TheRomanticsWB ok champ. Well, you must be an expert then because you were around cows up until you were 14 years of age. I run cattle for a living. Not a hobby, A living. Flies are a part of life. They are everywhere. From the high desert’s out west to the Appalachian’s out east. It’s not a new thing, and it’s not from a lack of management.
